WELLY SPIES WAGS AND BANK HOLIDAY BARBIE

Bank Holiday Monday arrived; leisurely breakfast, followed by close scrutiny of my Travel Guide (fixture list), led me to plump for a visit to Heslam Park, followed by West Halton Lane Alkborough.
Crutches at the ready, I set off for Scunthorpe. Arriving at the ground I was quickly made at home by Ian Snowden and Simon Kiddle and a very welcome cup of coffee followed.
I settled down in the company of Howard Kiddle to watch the action as the two Chand boys opened the innings  for the home club. It was obvious that both sides were missing some "key players".
Scunthorpe's batters never really got on top of the Caistor attack but posted a more-than-competitive 175 in the alloted overs.
However, I had to push on to Alkborough - so the result would have to wait till later.
Arriving at Alkborough, one of the friendliest clubs I've ever visited, I was met by Ralph Gray and escorted to a comfortable viewing spot with Chris and Phylis Mitchell. Now I knew I'd arrived as the coffee flowed almost as quickly as the friendly banter from all sides.
Barton had batted and posted 191 for 5. Wickets fell at intervals during the Alkborough innings with only Craig Ross getting to grips with the Barton attack led by Aussie import Adam McDermott with 6 wickets for 12 runs. Eventually the Alkborough innings folded at 154 all out by which time Chippy Clay was feeding the Alkborough WAGS from the barbie and he very kindly sent me over a sausage burger.
As players from both sides mixed freely in front of the clubhouse I was able to catch up with Don and Dan Tolson as well as Peter Thompson, them having joined Barton this season from Cleethorpes.
Nine o'clock arrived as I got home from an enjoyable afternoon. First job was to look for the Scunthorpe result; Caistor had been bowled out for 60, only two batsmen managing to reach double figures. Their missing players must have had more effect than those from Scunthorpe.
I've made no decision yet on where I'll be this coming weekend so be prepared; I may arrive on a ground near you!
