BLOWN WIDE OPEN

By Ann Boulton

The Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League table was blown wide open as champions Bracebridge Heath suffered their third defeat in a row, this time at the hands of Nettleham, to plummet down to fifth place.
Skegness went top following their 20 point win over Woodhall after Grimsby could only manage a winning draw at home to Market Deeping so stay second.
Nettleham share third place with Bourne who survived a mid-innings hiccup at Hartsholme to win by two wickets but with just 4% separating the top five teams, all have everything to play for.
At Cross O’Cliff Court, Nettleham set Bracebridge a modest total of 172, Warren Nel last man out for 94 and four wickets falling to Aaron Onyon and Matt Bradley. But Bracebridge were unable to regain the batting form that has deserted them recently and were all out for 111 of which Brett Houston hit 42 while for the visitors, Andy Carter and James Stevens also took four wickets each.
The closest game of the day came lower down the table after Lindum set Boston a seemingly tough target of 263 for eight, Pierce Morley-Barnes hitting 54. However, the home side also made runs in the sunshine and looked like securing a surprise victory until, with just five balls of the match to go, the final wicket fell on 259, three players having notched up half centuries.
Boston stay bottom but are in close touch with the three teams above them after Woodhall went down at Skegness by six wickets, Jack Luffman and Ricky Lovelace making half centuries for the visitors and Saeed Bariwala and Carl Wilson for Skegness.
Hartsholme failed to bowl Bourne out despite Martin Shillito’s haul of five for 40 but are on equal terms with Louth who lost five of their wickets to Jonathan Miles but gave Sleaford a hard time before the home side eventually won by four wickets, Tom Shorthouse making an unbeaten 81.
Grimsby’s Neal Snell hit the day’s only century, piling on a massive 157 at home to Deeping but Charlie Kearns with 74 and Gary Yeeles (59) helped the visitors hang on for a share of the points.

X-CITING PERFORMER

Up goes the usual cry from the scorers on the boundary: "Bowler's name?"
Smith, Brown...even Fisher...don't present much of a communication problem. But it's a little more difficult when Stamford Homes are in the field and Andreas Xiarchos is in their ranks.
Could he be the only man ever to play Lincs League cricket whose surname begins with X?
Watch out for this one in a sports quiz near you.

PS: The Grimsby team can usually rely on seamer Andreas for a good SPELL. And in Saturday's match he hit one of the biggest sixes seen at Hibaldstow for a long time.

FATHER AND SON OPENERS BOTH L.B.W.

By Glen Sands

Outcasts and Broughton went into their match locked in joint second place in the Lincs League Division One table on Saturday but it was Broughton who claimed the spot for themselves following a relatively comfortable 84-run victory over their Isle of Axholme rivals due in no small part to an impressive bowling display from all-rounder Paul Clark who captured 8 for 31 from his 16.2-over spell in the heat.
Broughton won the toss and chose to bat first but quickly found themselves two wickets down as Nick Crawford was bowled by Liam McAnaney for eight and Matt Hammond was well caught by a tumbling Mark Coulman off the bowling of Tom Sharpe for just five, leaving the total at 27 for 2. Paul Clark and Joe Wiley steadied the ship but just when it seemed that Clark was about to unleash on the home team he was bowled by McAnanaey for 26, the left-arm swing bowler proving to be a tough man to play for the visiting batsmen. He took a third wicket quickly when bowling Jake Parker for three when the total had reached 82 which brought Paul Reed to the crease to join Wiley and for a while runs began to flow more easily. Reed had made a quickfire 18 before he skied a catch to Mark Coulman at deep mid-off to give Jason Whiteley his first wicket of the day, and at 117 for 5 the game was in the balance. Shaun Clixby then headed to the middle adding 31 runs with the the giant Wiley who was in sight of his half-century only to fall six short when offering a third catch of the innings to Coulman with the total on 148. Two further runs had been added when Matthew Teal took the most incredible one-handed diving catch to send Nigel Dobbs back to the pavilion, the catch being greeted with a stunned silence such was its brilliance. But that saw Broughton's own youngster Rob Glentworth stride out to join Clixby and he soon produced some telling blows as he hit 18 to move the score along to 174 before he was deceived by old hand Whiteley who by then had taken four scalps. Liam McAnaney returned to pick up the last two wickets, those of Clixby for 17 and Tom Brock, stumped by Graham Oxley for three, which left the final total on 189 all-out from the 45 overs alloted, McAnaney finishing with an excellent 5 for 34 and Whiteley 4 for 41 for the Priorymen.
Outcasts reply saw father and son combination, Mark and Oliver Coulman, open their innings but both suffered a similar fate when being trapped LBW by Paul Clark when the score had reached firstly 13 then 18. A third LBW was to follow, again to Clark, as Simon Lewis was adjudged to be infront of his stumps having made just eight runs and at 33 for 3 the 190 target set by Broughton appeared a distance away. Andy Torr and Russell Fletcher set about turning things around and for a while appeared likely to do so, although some of the running between the wickets proved somewhat erratic. Then Shaun Clixby made the breakthrough, bowling Fletcher for 14 to leave Outcasts on 77 for 4. Darren Clark became namesake Paul's fourth LBW victim with the total on 82. Then the big wicket of Torr went to Clixby, caught behind by the evrgreen Nigel Dobbs for 30, and the writing was on the wall. Paul Clark continued to menace the batsmen and it was he who brought the game to a close as he went on to pick up a further four wickets, bowling Jason Whiteley for seven, having Tom Sharpe well caught at slip by Joe Wiley for six, then trapping Graham Oxley for a remarkable fifth LBW before closing out the innings when having Matthew Teal stunningly caught by Paul Reed at second slip. That left Outcasts all out for 105 and saw Clark finish with figures of 8 for 31 - a testament to his craft of bowling aggressively and straight on what was a terrific batting track at the Priory.
So Outcasts suffered their first defeat in four whilst Broughton stepped up their promotion quest.
But the afternoon was tinged with sadness for the Isle side who made a presentation to their stalwart wicketkeeper and former club captain, Graham Oxley, who will be heading for pastures new next month as his job takes him to Paris for the foreseeable future. His team mates and all at Outcasts CC wish both him and his family a fond farewell and hope that all goes well for them in the future.

OUTCASTS ON THE BALL

Compiled by Glen Sands

All three scheduled First Division matches in the North Lindsey Cricket League were cancelled yesterday, due to the England v Germany World Cup football match. They have been rearranged for later in the season, although all teams that cancelled will more than likely wish they had played, in view of the result!

DIVISION TWO
Outcasts 3rds gained their first league victory of 2010 when beating Brigg Town in an elongated affair at Hirst Priory. Outcasts batted first when the match started at 12 30pm and scored an impressive 208 for 5 with Jamie Belton hitting 93 and skipper Russell Fletcher 69, Paul Musslewhite taking 3 for 78 for the visitors who replied with 71 all-out after they had watched the football match, Liam McAnaney picking up 3 for 18 and Graeme Fletcher 2 for 6 as the Priorymen eased to a welcome win.
Wheatley & Leverton scored 211 for 8 against Hibaldstow 2nds, thanks chiefly to 70 from John Loates and 59 from James Waller, Mark Nicholson taking 3 for 46 for Hibaldstow, who made 147 in reply, Jack Stothard top scoring with 37, while Loates grabbed an impressive 3 for 4 for Wheatley. Broughton 3rds and Haxey 3rds had agreed to play a 20/20 match to take in the football but sadly for Haxey they were unable to raise enough players to travel, resulting in them having to forfeit the match. Alkborough 3rds and Grimsby Town 3rds will play their scheduled game later in the season.

DIVISION THREE
Barton Academy Vikings moved level with Luddington after beating Misterton 2nds in an entertaining match at Marsh Lane. Vikings batted first and scored 195 for 6, young opener Shreeve hitting 96 and Jeremy Evans 27. Misterton appeared set to overhaul their total until Tim Sharpe fell for 93, the Gainsborough outfit falling 38 runs short as Tom Palin took 4 for 27. The other scheduled match between Epworth and Bottesford will now be played on August 22.

QUALITY BATTING FROM BELTON

By Glen Sands

Luddington's resources were stretched to the limit in the Snaith Evening League last Thursday with no less than ten players unavailable to play at Drax Village through holiday or work committments but they managed to field eleven and ultimately won at a canter against a team that have in the past proved something of a bogey side.
Drax batted first but found runs hard to come by at first with both Jon Wroot and Matthew Mellers bowling quite tightly and Luddington struck an early blow when opener Morris was bowled by the impressive Wroot without having troubled the scorers. Kevin Thomas went in at number three and began to move things along, hitting several boundaries although he lost his partner Dan Montgomery for eight with the score on 31 when Jamie Belton took a superb one-handed tumbling catch at mid wicket. Luke Edwards joined Thomas and he too began to find the boundary only to be cut short on 13, bowled by the Isle team youngster Alex Fletcher who was to have a spell to remember as the game progressed. Simon Vaux was next to go, stumped by Mark Coulman off master Fletcher for nine with the total on 67 and the big-hitting Steve Smith became Fletcher's third wicket when Matt Mellers took a quite incredible catch at deep mid-on when the score had reached 78. Tom Sharpe then got amongst the wickets, bowling Ed Montgomery for 0 but it was proving to be Alex Fletcher's day and he produced an absolute humdinger of a delivery to bowl Thomas for 36 and leave Drax struggling on 81 for 7. Sharpe went on to pick up two further wickets to end with 3 for 17 but it was Fletcher who took the pludits with figures of 4 for 18 from his allotted overs as Drax ended on 97 for 9.
Luddington were confident of reaching their target but nevertheless knew that they would need to stay focused on their task and that was just what they got from opener Jamie Belton who produced a quality batting performance to guide them home. Along with Darren Clark he took the Luddington reply to 46 with a combination of excellent defence and aggressive hitting before Clark was bowled by home skipper Matt Atkinson for 15 which saw Simon Lewis join Belton in the middle. The two batsmen then proceede to steer Luddington home, picking up singles with ease and generally guiding their team to victory. Lewis was bowled for 18 by Dave Brinded with the score on 88 but Belton went on to make his own personal half-century and ultimately hit the winning boundary to end the game on 54 not out, earning Ludd an eight-wicket victory that keeps them in the hunt to retain their title.
Luddington met up with an old friend at Drax in the shape of former Keadby and Gunness player Ralph Maud, who now lives in the Drax area and umpires their night matches. Ralph enjoyed a long chat with Luddington and Outcasts man Ian Fletcher, catching up with things and reminising about old times when both used to play in the old Isle of Axholme Evening League all those years ago. Luddington have a bye on Thursday July 1st after which they will have four games left to continue their chase of leaders Fishlake, begining at Burn on July 8th.

Division One
Leaders Fishlake maintained their two point lead with a comfortable 56 runs victory over bottom club Goole Town, posting a total of 151 for 7 thanks to 41 from Josh Mason and 40 from Richard Copley then bowling Town out for 95. Askern suffered a second successive narrow defeat , this time at the hands of improving Sykehouse who set a target of 142 for 7 for Welfare to chase, Chris Marshall scoring a splendid 85 and the Askern side fell just four runs short with Steve Barnes hitting 29 and Matthew Wilson 28 which puts a dent in their title challenge.

Division Two

Bottom placed Carlton Towers gained their second league victory when beating Hurst Cortney by 3 wickets, and it was down to that man Mark Holmes again who hit 102 not out as they successfully chased down the Hurst target of 117 for 6.

PART-TIME BOWLERS PLAY THEIR PART

By Glen Sands

Luddington went into their North Lindsey Division Three KO Cup Semi-Final against Everton 3rds without three of their regular bowlers but still produced a terrific performance to earn a Final berth against Upton cum Kexby at Barton on Sunday, August 22nd.
Everton chose to bat first on their synthetic wicket and began well, aided by the fact that opening bowler Barry O'Brien was having difficulty coming to terms with the slope on which he had to run before reaching the popping crease but he eventually got to grips with it and picked up the first wicket when trapping Guy Paxman LBW for four with the total on 35. That brought Tim Paxman to the middle to join Dan Brighton who had pounced on anything loose but he had reached 33 when he was caught at cover by Danny Taylor off the bowling of Geoff Smith, leaving Everton on a still healthy-looking 52 for 2. Tom Gibson made 14 before he became Smith's second victim when the home side had reached 71 and just after they had brought up double figures Tim Paxman was very unluckily run out when Anthony Fitzgerald deflected a drive onto the stumps, leaving him stranded when backing up. Home skipper Peter Dobson was next to go, bowled by Fitzgerald for 30 with the total on 118 and the impressive slow bowler picked up a second wicket when Shaun Leach was caught by Darren Clark having made just five runs. Richard Chambers was next to go without a run being added when he chipped a catch to Gareth Parkin off Steve Proctor who had been pressed into bowling for the first time in over six years such was the lack of regular bowling that Ludd were suffering. That man Fitzgerald struck again when trapping Ed Campbell LBW for five with the total on 137 but to their credit Everton battled hard and finished their 40 overs on a creditable 164 for 8, Steve Johnson hitting 18 not out and Glen Cruickshank on seven , although if Luddington had been offered that total at the start they would certainly have accepted it given their derth of bowling.
Luddington's response got off to a poor start when Danny Taylor was run out following a terrific bit of fielding, although there was a degree of misunderstanding involved between Taylor and Darren Clark who didn't fair much better when he was "yorked" by Glen Cruickshank for nine with the Luddington total on 24. Geoff Smith and Andy Lawson were brought together in the middle and as ever Lawson was at his beligerant best as he crashed the ball to all parts, racing to 29 in no time before mis-hitting a shot off the splice of his bat straight to Sammy Rehman, off Richard Chambers, leaving the Isle side on 58 for 3. The ship needed to be steadied and that's just what happened as Smith and Richard Wroot batted very sensibly against the young Everton bowling attack. Both batsmen punished any loose deliveries soundly and they soon began to guide Luddington into a winning position. Wroot in particular was imperious form and as they eased toward the finishing line hwe brought up his half century with anotehr sumtuos boundary. Smith appeared set to join him only to be superbly caught at cover by Gibson, off Chambers, on 47 with Ludd just ten runs from victory - but Wroot ensured that the target was reached as he finished on 56 not out, earning Luddington a comfortable 6 wicket victory.
Credit goes to Everton's youngsters who never gave up trying throughout the match and special mention has to go to the Luddington bowlers all of whom did really well, especially Smith, Fitzgerald and Proctor who seldom turn their arms over, which makes their efforts even more impressive.

THAT'S OUT!

FIVE WICKETS HANDY FOR ANDY

By Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes 1st X1 slipped to their third successive defeat in the Yorkshire ECB Premier league despite a brave attempt to chase down a mammoth victory target set by Rotherham at Chichester Road on Saturday. Batting first, Rotherham racked up 300-9 in their 55 overs with all but Alex Osmond of the Cleethorpes bowlers coming in for some punishment. Rotherham set a good pace all the way through their innings with Gerhard Rudolph, brother of Yorkshire opener Jacques, particularly impressive in hitting 85 in only 71 balls. Andy Ellis came back for a productive second spell to finish with figures of 5/83 in 16 overs as Rotherham lost wickets in their attempt at setting an even bigger target. Cleethorpes bowlers struggled in the blustery conditions throughout. Harry Clewett claimed two wickets but went for 51 runs in his eight overs while Skipper James Osmond, who opened the attack for Meggies recorded 1/75 in a 13-over burst. Brother Alex at least kept a lid on the middle order with 1/41 in twelve overs on an excellent batting wicket. In reply, Cleethorpes got off to a positive start with Eddie Carlton and Bill Kirby adding 37 for the first wicket in under nine overs before Carlton was stumped after attempting a big shot over long on. The arrival of Peter Fulton looked like swinging the game Cleethorpes’ way as he and Kirby produced a dazzling array of shots in adding 153 for the second wicket. Fulton smashed nine fours and four massive sixes on his way to a brilliant 96-ball century before miss-hitting to cover to fall for 104, his second ton of the season and taking his league average up to nearly fifty. Kirby had been the more patient partner in the stand and he reached his half century in 100 balls. James Osmond (2) fell soon after but the key wicket was the dismissal of Kirby for 62 to a contentious caught and bowled when it appeared a bump ball. With the target reaching over eight an over, Cleethorpes middle order collapsed with only Charlie Tomlinson (22 in 23 balls) looking capable of threatening Rotherham. From 190-1, Cleethorpes were finally bowled out for 250 in the 51st over to leave them 50 runs short as the defeat leaves them fourth bottom of the league table.

Both Cleethorpes 2nd and 3rd X1 had excellent victories in their respective cup competition s to progress to the next round. Paul Sunley’s 2nd X1 came back from the dead to record a superb one-wicket win at Alford and take them into the quarter finals of the George Marshall Trophy. Alford set a target of 163 when bowled out in the 45th over. All Cleethorpe bowlers produced good spells with the highlight being Nathan Judah’s 2/17 in his nine overs. Richard Griffin (2/20 in 9 overs) and Indy Hayre (2/23 in 8.3 overs) provided good support with Rob Griffin continuing his fine form with his leg spin as he took 3/47 in ten overs. Elliot Drinkell’s 26 got Cleethorpes of to a quick start but wickets started to tumble. Patrick Hughes (30) was fourth man out with the score on 68 but a bottom order collapse saw Cleethorpes on the brink of defeat at 108-9 still 55 runs shy of victory. However Rob Griffin with a superb 45 not out batting at number nine and last man Judah (6 not out) managed to eke out the runs to take Cleethorpes home with two overs to spare. Cleethorpes will face Bracebridge Heath 2nds away on July 18th in their Quarter final tie.

Bob Welton cup holders Cleethorpes 3rds progressed to the Semi fainals with a four wicket win at South Kelsey 2nds on Saturday. Again a steady bowling performance saw all bowlers chip in with the pick being Simon Taylor’s 1/23 in his nine overs. Fred Lumby picked up 2/20 in seven overs while Lewis Markham and Richard Woodward were rewarded with three-wickets late on while Ian Mansfield took 1/43 in his second game for the side. Despite openers Ben Marris (20) and Ryan Harrison (10) getting Meggies of to a decent start they soon collapsed to 36-5 and looked in serious trouble. A superb sixth wicket stand of 111 between Andy Haith (69) and Simon Taylor (54 not out) though brought the game back to Cleethorpes and they clinched victory in the 41st over. They travel to Haxey 2nds for their Semi-fainal on July 25th.

Cleethorpes 4ths and Cleethorpes North Lindsey sides were not in action last weekend while the Academy X1, lead by Mike Shelton, recorded a comprehensive 91-run win at home to Sutton on Sea. James Windeatt (61) and Ian Mansfield (55) hit half centuries in Cleethorpes’ total of 215 all out in the 40th over with Josh Latimer adding 20. Sutton were bowled out for 124 in their reply inside 38 overs. Matty Owen stood out for the bowlers with a fiery 4/16 in eight overs. Tom Latimer to 2/26 in 4.5 overs with John Mansfield, Mike Shelton, Stuart Harvey and George Hawkey all chipping in with wickets.

This Saturday sees Cleethorpes 1st X1 travel to Hull in the Yorkshire league eager to record to first win in four games. Paul Sunley’s 2nd X1 face Messingham at Chichester Road (1pm Start) in the first of a Premier league double-header. They travel to Appleby Frodingham 2nds on Sunday. Cleethorpes 3rds travel to Louth 2nds for the second time in three weeks looking to repeat their 7-run win of a fornight ago. Cleethorpes 4ths face Messingham 2nds at the Stamford Club (2pm Start) this Saturday. Sunday sees both North and East Lindsey sides in action. Cleethorpes’ North Lindsey side aim to defend their top of the table status at home to Messingham (2pm Start) while the Academy X1 face Alford at the Stamford Club (2pm Start).

By Glen Sands

Their opponents in the July 12th Final are not yet known however as there was a quite remarkable tie at Sykehouse against the old enemy Fishlake , Andy Edwards scoring 40 and Phil Sanders 25 in Sykehouse's total of 124 for 8 which was then mirrored by Fishlake for whom Richard Copley hit 34 and Tim Elliott 30. Arthur Brant Trophy Quarter Finals
Chris Welburn hit an impressive 123 not out for Pollington as they set a huge target of 196 for 3 against Airmyn who replied with 115 for 8 , Roper top scoring with 41 not out for the Percy Arms side and that will send Pollington to play Goole Firemen on July 5th in the Semi Finals following their narrow 19 runs vicftory over Eggborough , Liam Mitchell hitting 24 for the Firemen in their 105 target only for Eggborough to be bowled out for 86. The other Semi Final will see Hurst Courtney entertain Sturgethorpe , Hurst easing to a comfortable 9 wicket win over Howden who were bowled out for 79 before Hurst cruised to their win whilst Sturgethorpe successfully chased down the 94 for 7 that Carlton Towers posted for the loss of just three wickets.

LINDSEY CUP THRILLERS

By Glen Sands

DIVISION ONE KO CUP SEMI-FINALS
Barton Town 3rds will meet Marshalls Sports on Sunday, August 8th at Grimsby Town's ground, Augusta Street, in the North Lindsey League Division One Cup Final after both teams enjoyed relatively comfortable wins last Sunday. Barton bowled Messingham 3rd out for 166 at Marsh Lane, John Knapton taking 5 for 23 and Gareth Mellors 3 for 29. Then Elliot Sampson hit 59 as Barton eased to 169 for 2 in reply, Mark Austin scoring 34 and that man Knapton 31 for the Humbersiders.
Marshalls set a tough target of 191 for 9 at Heslam Park thanks chiefly to Brooks who made 69 and Ahmed ( 55 ) and it proved to be too many for Scunthorpe Town who were bowled out for 129 , Ian Snowden top scoring with 31 as Gareth Andrews took a creditable 4 for 18 for the Gainsborough outfit.

DIVISION TWO KO CUP SEMI-FINALS
Both Division Two Semi Finals were absolute cliffhangers with Broughton 3rds and Outcasts 3rds squeezing through to the Finals by the skin of their teeth. Haxey 3rds had just ten men at Broughton and set a target of 125 then were reduced to just nine in the field as Joe Wiley held his nerve to make 35 not out as Broughton replied with 126 for 9 whilst at Hirsts Priory Outcasts 3rds made 193 all out with 79 from Jamie Belton and 59 from skipper Russell Fletcher, Harry Warwick picking up 3 for 37 and Taylor 3 for 43 for Grimsby who needed just one run off the final ball to tie the match and therefore go through on less wickets only for Liam McAnaney to produce a last gasp run out to send the Isle side into the Final against Broughton in what was a thrilling finish , Danny Birchall scoring 58 and Steve Crossley 52 for Grimsby earlier in the innings.

DIVISION THREE KO CUP SEMI-FINALS
Luddington will meet Upton cum Kexby in the Third Division Final at Barton on Sunday August 22nd as both sides won through in relative comfort. Luddington were set a target of 164 for 8 by Everton 3rds with Danny Brighton hitting 33 and Peter Dobson 30 , spin bowler Anthony Fitzgerald taking 3 for 39 for Ludd who then cruised to 165 for 4 thanks to 56 not out from Richard Wroot and 47 from stalwart Geoff Smith whilst Upton produced an excellent win over Barton Acadamy Vikings whom they bowled out for 75 before Shaun Metcalf hit 43 not out to guide Upton to a terrific 7 wicket victory and a berth in the Cup Final.

CLOSE-RUN WIN FOR LINCS OVER-60s

From Ann Boulton

Lincolnshire Over-60s' second win of the season in the Spitfire National Over-60 Championship East came with just four balls of their innings to spare.
Playing Suffolk at Boston, Lincs lost the toss and were put in the field but Mike Smith was among the wickets in his first over. From five for one, Suffolk rallied to reach 51 before the second wicket but were then reduced to 71 for five.
A good stand between Peter Boughton (48) and Peter Webb (41) took the score to 144 and at the close the visitors had reached 183 for nine, John Mountain with three wickets.
Lincs’ reply got off to an even worse start, two wickets falling on 15 and the third on 38. But this brought out Keith West to join Bob Leafe and their partnership added 109 before West was out for 53. Leafe lost another partner on 171 but went on to make an unbeaten 70 off 86 balls with 10 fours and take Lincs to victory in the final over the game.
By coincidence, on the following Saturday, West’s son Graham also scored 53 for Louth in the Lincs ECB Premier League – using the same bat!
The Over-60s' next match is on Tuesday, June 29 against Norfolk at Skegness CC. The following day, Lincolnshire Over-50s also play Norfolk at Skegness.

RICH AT WROOT OF BROUGHTON'S CUP EXIT

By Glen Sands

Outcasts and Broughton second eleven sides produced an excellent game of cricket at Hirst Priory in what can only be described as autumnal conditions with a hefty wind blowing and cloudy skies above.
Broughton were invited to bat first by home skipper Ian Fletcher and they were soon one down when their captain Dave Jones was trapped LBW by Alex Fletcher for three with the total on just seven, but from that moment on Nick Crawford and Oliver Reid batted well to guide their team past the half century mark. The scoring rate wasn't particularly quick as Fletcher, Jonathan Wroot and Matthew Teal kept things tight but they were setting things up by not giving away their wickets. The score had reached 77 when Reid was bowled by Graham Clark for 33 well constructed runs, then Clark struck twice more when bowling Brett Fish for 10 and having Rob Ward caught by Scott Buttrick for nought, leaving Broughton on 89 for 4. Shaun Clark became his namesake's fourth victim when he holed out to Jonathan Wroot having made just seven when the total had reached 97 and two runs had been added when Danny Thompson was comprehensively stumped by Andy Colebrook off the bowling of Ian Fletcher without getting off the mark. Throughout it all, however, Nick Crawford was steadily accumulating runs and when joined by Lee Stothard they began to rebuild the Broughton innings. Crawford brought up his half-century and Stothard looked solid as they moved the total up to 148 before the latter was bowled by Scott Buttrick for a valuable 25. James Watson was next to the crease and along with Crawford they took the final total to 162 for 7 after 45 overs, Watson ending on seven not out and Crawford on an excellent 73 not out, having carried his bat. For Outcasts everyone of their bowlers bowled well, with Jonathan Wroot proving quite economical, going for just 23 from his nine, Matthew Teal 22 from seven and there was one wicket each for Alex Fletcher, dad Ian and Scott Buttrick but it was Graham Clark who took the main honours, taking 4 for 43 from his alloted nine overs.
Outcasts' reply to the Broughton target got off to a poor start when Darren Clark was bowled by Shaun Clark for five with the total on seven which brought Anthony Fitzgerald to the crease where he join Richard Wroot who batted superbly for the Priorymen. They put together a terrific partnership of 77 with Fitzgerald playing the anchor role but it was he who became the second wicket to fall when he was bowled for 12 by what can only be described as a woeful delivery from Dave Jones, the ball bouncing twice before squeezing through the batsman's defences to knock back his off stump. Graham Clark fared little better when he inexplicably directed a half-tracker from Brett Fish straight to Sam Benson at mid off having made just eight, leaving Outcasts on 99 for 3, but that man Wroot was in tremendous form and he eased to his half-century with another imperious shot for four. Russell Fletcher was in the middle with him by now and they took the total to 139 when Wroot had moved to within ten of what would have been a magnificent ton, only for him to edge a catch to Nick Crawford at slip off Rob Ward. It still appeared likely that Outcasts would ease to victory but to their credit Broughton fought hard and picked up a further three wickets to set the home pulses racing, Fletcher being caught by Shaun Clark off Jamie Watson for 16 who then trapped Matthew Teal LBW and with the scores tied Andy Colebrook was run out for four when failing to run his bat over the line in an attempt to see his team home. That honour went to Scott Buttrick who pushed a single through mid on to take his personal tally to 13 and Outcasts to a match-winning 163 for 7 but they were made to fight hard for their Semi Final berth by a very plucky Broughton team.
So the Priorymen will now travel to Messingham 2nds where they will hope Richard Wroot can continue his outstanding batting form. If that proves to be the case they might just make the final.

Champions Luddington and Snaith and District Evening League division one leaders Askern produced a real thriller on the Isle of Axholme on Thursday and there was a controversial end as Ludd squeezed home by just five runs to keep up their hopes of holding on to their title.
It was the home side who batted first after Welfare arrived following their long journey and they made a tremendous start with the in-form Darren Clark and Simon Lewis blazing a trail with some cracking shots. Clark in particular punished the visitors' opening bowlers when plundering four boundaries on what was a lightning fast outfield, while at the other end Lewis was hitting the ball crisply and found the boundary twice as the pair raced the score up to 52 in just seven overs. However, Askern soon realised that they were bowling too full and once they changed tactics to deliver the ball back of a length they began a remarkable fightback. Lewis was caught by Gareth Williams off John Morton for 19 and Clark went for 32 in the same over, caught by Matt Wilson to put a different complexion on the score at 52 for 2. Suddenly the runs dried up as Andy Lawson, Peter Tait and Anthony Fitzgerald all went cheaply - Gareth Williams, Matt Wilson and Josh Gillies picking up a wicket apiece and for eight overs Luddington crawled from 52 to just 59 as the Welfare bowlers showed just why they stood top of the table. However, Russell Fletcher and Mark Coulman dug deep and gradually began to build the innings once more. Fletcher struck three boundaries and ran really well while Coulman struck the ball well, cracking four boundaries as they took the Luddington total past three figures. He was out to the very last delivery of the innings having made 27, leaving Fletcher unbeaten on 29, both scoring valuable runs for the Isle side.
Both teams felt that they were capable of winning the game after Luddington had finished on 116 for 6, although from the home team's point of view they knew they wouild have to bowl well and keep things tight early on and that was just how things panned out with ex-Welfare player Jon Wroot in particular producing an tremendous spell of 4 overs in which he only went for four runs and he also picked up the wicket of John Morton, LBW for just five. Josh Gillies and Ashley Towler batted well but just couldn't find the boundaries they required, Towler pouncing on a couple of loose deliveries to keep them in touch but Ludd's fielding was proving to be exceptional. Scott Buttrick, Anthony Fitzgerald and Graeme Fletcher made several terrific stops to frustrate the visitors and it was Buttrick who took a phenomenal caught and bowled to send Gillies back to the pavilion for 16, reacting panther-like to a ball drill back at him ferociously. Gareth Williams joined Towler, who by now was beginning to pick up the pace and for a while they appeared set to see Welfare home until Luddington brought on Liam McAnaney who normally opens the bowling but on this occasion produced a nerveless spell at the death to help the Isle side complete a nervy win. He bowled Williams for 9 with the total on 78 but the really big wicket came when Towler was very well caught by that man Buttrick on the deep long on boundary for 42 off the bowling of Peter Tait, making it 84 for 3. Big-hitting Andy Lunn couldn't seem to get going and his innings was brought to an end in similar fashion when Darren Clark held his nerve, and the ball, to earn Tait a second wicket with the total on 102. Matt Wilson offered a straight forward caught and bowled to Tait to give him the chance of a hat-trick although Luddington would settle for a dot ball, which was exactly what they got, lweaving Askern requiring 15 to win from the final over. Then came a contentious moment when wicketkeeper Gillies hoisted a shot toward the deep long-on boundary which was caught by Graeme Fletcher who in the process of taking it appeared to touch the ground with the ball in his hand. With the game so close it was only natural that both teams felt differently about what had happened, with the Welfare umpire clouding the issue further when originally signalling a six. But once things had settled down the "catch" was deemed invalid and the six reduced to just two runs. Gillies added a further boundary to make the tension even more unbearable but he then lost the strike with a further six required to win and McAnaney duly bowled two dot balls to clinch a hard-earned 5-run victory for the Isle side, moving them level in the table with Welfare, just two points behing new leaders Fishlake who won their game at Burn.
Both teams retired to the River Don at Eastoft who once again did Luddington proud with a spledid spread and thankfully the frought atmosphere from earlier became far more amicable, which is just how it should be.
Next up for Ludd is a trip to Drax Village where once again they anticipate a tough encounter, but on this evidence they will certainly battle all the way in their attempt to hold on to the Snaith & District div one title.

CLASSY KNOCK FROM KIWI

PeterFulton drives for four on the way to making 85 against Doncaster.

Pictures and report kindly supplied by Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes 1st X1 went down to a second successive Yorkshire League defeat when losing by five wickets at home to Doncaster last Saturday. After batting first they posted 195 all out in the 55th over, a total that should have been far greater as they had been well positioned at the mid-innings stage. Cleethorpes' innings had been anchored by another classy knock from their New Zealand overseas professional Peter Fulton - 85 runs had come up in only 111 balls and had included eleven fours and a six. Eddie Carlton had got Cleethorpes off to a good start on his return to the side after a broken thumb. Despite losing Bill Kirby (12) early on, he and Fulton added 70 for the second wicket with Carlton making 34. It was after Alex Osmond's dismissal for 14 that the innings ground to a halt with the middle order's inability to get Fulton back on strike. Wickets continued to tumble after Fulton's departure to a fine boundary catch with Doncaster's Stuart claiming a spectacular hat-trick in the final over to leave Meggies all out for a total some fifty runs shy of what was expected. Doncaster's openers got off to a flying start before the introduction of John Zielinski, making his first Yorkshire League appearance this season, pegged them back with two wickets. Skipper James Osmond soon got his spinners into action with brother Alex bowling a marathon 18-over spell. Both he and Harry Clewett were finding turn but were not backed up by the fielders as a number of sharp chances were missed. With opener Attenborough making a dogged century, Doncaster sealed victory in the 49th over for the loss of five wickets. Harry Clewett picked up 2/30 in his 11 overs with Osmond 1/64 in 18.1 overs. Zielinski had been the pick of the attack with 2/42 in ten overs as Doncaster completed a resounding eight-point win.
Cleethorpes 2nd X1 travelled to Messingham last Saturday in what was a clash of the Lincs Premier League's top two. In what was a thrilling match Cleethorpes came away defeated by the narrowest of margins when they went down to a one-wicket defeat. After batting first, Paul Sunley's side made 180 all out in the 49th over therefore giving Messingham an extra over which was to prove costly in the final analysis. Callum Robinson (42) and Sunley (42) had added 78 for the second wicket as Cleethorpes looked to build a commanding total. But after losing Patrick Hughes for 23 the innings went into freefall as they lost an amazing seven wickets for just nine runs to leave them 136-9. It took a fine ninth-wicket stand of 44 between Nathan Judah (15) and Stuart Harvey (27 not out) to drag Cleethorpes to their final total. In reply Cleethorpes opening bowlers soon had Messingham in big trouble as they slipped to 37-6 with Rob Brice (4/38 in 13 overs) and Judah (2/56 in 19 overs) finding plenty of movement. However, Messingham's young wicketkeeper Cameron Fletcher produced a brilliant innings of 101 not out in just 129 balls to drag his side back into the game. After putting on 88 for the seventh wicket, Messingham still needed 22 from the final wicket pair to clinch victory. Twice straightforward catches were put down before Messingham sealed victory in the 51st over, the very over Cleethorpes had forefitted with being bowled out as Meggies slipped to third in the league on the back of this defeat.
Paul Hewstsone's 3rd X1 clinched their first win of the season with an excellent seven-run triumph at Louth 2nds on Saturday. They recovered from 55-5 to post 148-7 in their 45 overs with Richard Woodward hitting a fine 50 not out. Andy Haith (32), Dan Tolson (23) and Neil Wheeler all made telling contributions. Young Ian Mansfield got Clee of to a good start with three early wickets on his third team debut and as wickets tumbled a tense finish was building. Lewis Markham produced a fine spell of 3/30 in 11 overs to peg Louth back and at the close they had reached 141-9 in their 45 overs as Cleethorpes take 16 points. Mansfield finished with figures of 3/22 in his nine overs with Woodward and Jeff Todd both taking one wicket.
Cleethorpes 4th X1 recorded an excellent five-wicket win over Owmby at the Stamford Club last Saturday. Owmby posted a healthy 200-6 in their 45 overs. Mike Shelton was the pick of the Cleethorpes bowlers with 4/86 in a marathon 23-over spell. Young Reece Holberry was Clee's other wicket-taker picking up good figures of 2/16 in his 6 over spell. In reply David Manfield and Will Abe added 69 for the third wicket, Mansfield hitting 43 while Abe went on to make a glorious 86 before being out with victory in sight. He added a further 83 for the fourth wicket with Paul Ridley who remained unbeaten on 43 and finished the game off with a towering six.
With neither the North or East Lindsey sides in action last Sunday, a Select X1 faced South Yorkshire League side Mexborough in a friendly. Cleethorpes had reached 183-7 in the 38th over when the rain began and led to the eventual postponement. Rob Brice (102) hit a maiden ton for Cleethorpes.

NOTES ON A LINCOLN SUNDAY PREM GAME

Market Rasen v Nettleham – 13/06/10
By Andy Richley

Rather than the usual match report for a game I’ve been involved in I thought I’d try something different for this match, as turning out for the Sunday side these days involves far more of a ‘watching brief’ than when I’m playing Lincs League 4 cricket with the 2nds. There follows a set of thoughts that might, or might not, hang together.
• Scoring’s fun. 40 overs of looking after Nettleham’s book reminded me of the pleasure that can be gained from scoring properly – especially when it all adds up at the end. Taking down all of the detail; when the batsmen went in, when they came out, balls faced etc. is just plain satisfying. It’s not better than playing, but it was satisfying. I’ll be getting a multi-coloured set of pens next...

• Just ‘cos a team’s young, doesn’t mean they’ll roll over. Nettleham turned up at Rase Park with Ed Bosworth, Warren Nel (their South African Pro) and eight youngsters. The plethora of Lincolnshire jumpers and caps should have given the Rasen side a heads-up that they weren’t complete mugs, but young Danny Lea still had us 2 down in the first ten overs.
Interestingly, it wasn’t until they turned to the experienced spin of Nel and Bosworth that Rasen’s batsmen were able to really kick on. The pair went for 109 from their 20 overs as Matt Rutherford (85, pictured) built a decent total of 204 for 6, with help from Graeme Bell (42) and Dale Christie (42 not out from 29 balls).

• It’s not essential to be quick out of the gate. Time and again I’ve watched teams do this to Rasen 2nds in the Lincs League and Rasen’s Sunday XI did the same to Nettleham. Rasen were 30 for 2 after ten overs and 75 for 2 after twenty. But wickets in hand meant they could crack on for the second half of the innings and still amass a competitive total. It’s an obvious point, but one that so many young players fail to heed.

• One man doesn’t make a team. Whilst Nettleham’s youngsters flung themselves around in the field to great effect, with the bat the visitors’ lineup consisted of Warren Nel (114 not out) and not much else. Once Bell bowled Bosworth for 22 it was a case of attacking one end for the home side and trying to give Nel the single wherever possible. The South African’s innings was even more impressive in that other than Bosworth, no other player got more than 6 as Rasen’s bowlers shared the wickets around. Nel even managed to tighten things up, taking 27 off Karl Bierlein in the 35th over off. Bierlein’s previous nine overs had garnered him 3 for 27. Nel’s attempts to turn a defiant last-wicket stand into a dash for victory were only undone in the 37th over, with Lea the last man to fall.

What could have been? Anyone who’s been in the bar at Rase Park on a Sunday will have heard this before, but Sunday’s game was a prime example of this question. Rasen’s side on the day contained:
Nine players who were educated at De Aston in Market Rasen.
All of whom played youth cricket at Rase Park.
Eight players who’ve played Lincolnshire ECB Premier League cricket.
Of whom six have turned out for ECB sides this season.

Unfortunately, only four of the side turn out for Rasen in the Lincs League. Most of the team are plying their trade at higher-levels than Lincs League 2 or 4 and this is the ultimate dichotomy of Rasen’s Sunday XI. When we’re somewhere near full-strength, like we were last weekend, we’re a handy outfit, even with your correspondent lumbering around in the outfield, it’s just a pity that Rasen aren’t playing at a level on a Saturday that means most of these lads are playing for us all weekend.

The win cements Rasen’s place, for the time being, in the top four of what is a competitive Premier League competition and sets things up nicely for the next few months, as long as someone can turn Boston over.

SNAITH LEAGUE SHIELD FIRST ROUND

By Glen Sands

Shield holders Luddington fell at the first hurdle in their defence of the trophy against a very competitive Sykehouse side which bore no resemblance to the one that had travelled to Luddington just five days earlier, and the Isle side were not helped when they had to play with a man short after a misunderstanding between one of the players and the secretary (who took full resposibity for the mix up).
The match began in the most bizarre of fashins when home skipper Danny Greenslade tossed the coin, away skipper Anthony Fitzgerald called heads and the coin wedged in a crack between pavement slabs to give neither an answer! Once repeated Sykehouse won and chose to bat first but were quickly one down when Graham Clark took the most incredible of diving one handed catches to send Phil Sanders back to the pavilion for 4 and earn Graeme Fletcher a wicket in his first over. However that brought Jim Davies to the crease to join Andy Edwards and the two right-handers proceeded to pile on the runs with some excellent running and some cracking boundaries when the Ludd bowlers strayed from the straight. They added 80 in no time, taking advantage of the fact that Ludd had one less man on the field but to their credit the visitors fielding was in the main outstanding as they were made to work hard to plug the gaps. Davies eventually went, run out for 40 after a mix up with Edwards, the score by now being 84 for 2 which saw Mick Gallagher enter the fray. Edwards reached his half century and at the same time brought up three figures for Sykehouse but just when he looked set to rseally unleash a barrage he was caught by wicket keeper Oliver Coulman off Graham Clark for a splendid 59. Big-hitting Stuart Bellwood went in at number five but it was Gallagher who struck the biggest blow of the innings when depositing Clark back over his head into an area where there was no way of retreiving the ball. Clark gained his revenge on Bellwood whom he bowled for 15 and he will find himself on a hat trick when next he bowls as he had Chris Marshall caught by Alex Fletcher off the final delivery of the innings, leaving Gallagher on 28 not out and the overall score on 149 for 5.
If Luddington were to reach such a tough target they needed to make a decent start but sadly that was not to be as Andy Lawson was bowled early in the piece by Pete Sanders having scored just five runs and when Graham Clark inexplicably smashed a full toss from the same bowler straight to the bowler's brother Phil having made six they were in a spot of bother at 31 for 2. However opener Jamie Belton and number four batsman Peter Tait then set about the bowling with relish and produced some spectacular hitting as they ate into the Sykehouse lead. Both men hit the ball to all parts , whilst at the same time putting fielders under pressure with some excellent running and it was'nt long before they had brought up three figures. Belton took his own score to 56 before he was caught by Chris Marshall at deep mid off from the bowling of Phil Sanders with the total on 103 but Tait was in full flow at the other end and having lost his partner he simply slipped up to another gear and began to pound the ball over the ropes in what was becoming a monumental innings. Sykehouse understandably dropped the field back but that was of no deterant to Tait who ran like a whippet with new to the crease Oliver Coulman to keep the pressure on. Sadly for Coulman he was run out for two in an attempt to keep the in form Tait on strike and as the final two overs approached Ludd needed an unlikely 30 runs to win. That did'nt faze Mr Tait who plundered fourteen from the penulitimate over , having buy now reached a magnificent half century but to his credit Sykehouse' Richard Hill held his nerve in the fial over which went for only five and the brave fight by the trphy holders had ended in a glorious failure. Tait ended the game on 63 not out , then headed off to celebrate by going to work on nights, while Ludd were left to rue the fact taht they only had ten men although it must be said that Sykehouse were deserving of their victory with spledid contributions from Andy Edwards, Jim Davies and Mick Gallagher with bat coupled with some tight and impressive bowling from Peter Sanders and Stuart Bellwood and the icey cool death bowling from Richard Hill.
All in all this was a tremendous game of cricket, played in goos spirit, but played to win by two good sides. Sykehouse will now entertain the winners of the Fishlake v Drax Village match, while Luddington are left to "concentrate on the league" despite their valiant efforts on the night.

FIRST DEFEAT FOR CHAMPS

By Ann Boulton

A week is a long time in cricket as Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League leaders Bracebridge Heath found out to their cost as, from breaking records one weekend, the champions fell to their first defeat of the season the next.
And it was lowly Louth who only hauled themselves off the bottom of the table last weekend who inflicted that defeat to cause the upset of the day.
Batting first at Cross O’Cliff Court, Louth reached 212 for nine, thanks in part of an innings of 83 from Graham West. Chasing this seemingly modest total, Bracebridge found themselves five for two as last weekend’s record breakers Mark Fell and Andrew Crook were both out in the first three overs.
Jason Scheepers appeared to be rescuing the innings but when he went for 64, Bracebridge fell to 179 all out, Seth Rance taking five for 38 for Louth.
This moved Louth up another two places to eighth while at the top of the table, second placed Grimsby closed the gap with a 20 pointer at Sleaford, bowling the home side out for 145 before going on to win by seven wickets, new signing John Maddock making his first half century for the club.
This sent Sleaford plummeting down the table once again, going from third to seventh with Skegness taking their place in third after an equally low scoring game against Lindum who were all out for 144, a total the seasiders overtook for the loss off four wickets.
At the Mayflower Ground, Boston were bowled out for 140, Fahad Masood adding another five wickets to his tally. Bourne then cruised to a six wicket win which took them into the top half of the table for the first time this season, leaving Boston in 10th.
The closest game of the day was at Jubilee Park where fourth placed Nettleham set bottom team Woodhall Spa a total of 214 for seven, only to see their opponents come with six runs of their target, finishing on 206 for eight to pick up a valuable 10 points.
This moved Woodhall closer to 11th placed Hartsholme who also hung on for a draw. Having bowled Market Deeping out for 225, Hartsholme were in trouble at 101 for six but at the close had reached 156 for eight, giving them eight points.

MARSHALLS REACH SEMI-FINALS

By Glen Sands

Marshalls Sports won through to the semi-finals of the North Lindsey League First Division Knockout Cup yesterday, beating Caistor Cougars 2-1 in a bowl-off following a second rain interupted attempt to play their first round match. This time around they did manage to make a start but with the score standing at 152 for 8 at tea the heavens opened and everyone agreed to settle the tie with a bowl-off, sending the Gainsborough outfit into a semi-final trip to Scunthorpe 4ths on Sunday.

DIVISION ONE
Barton Town 3rds registered a total of 172 for 9 against Appleby-Frodingham 3rds at Marsh Lane with Will Yates hitting 50 and Frod had reached 40 without loss in reply when the rain brought an early end to proceedings.

DIVISION TWO
League leaders Grimsby Town 3rds gained three points following the news that Wheatley & Leverton were unable to raise a team whilst the other two scheduled games in this Division were rain affected, the first being at Brigg where Broughton 3rds made 177 for 6, with Brigg's reply stalling at 26 for 0 when the wet stuff arrived. The Isle of Axholme derby appeared to be heading in Haxey's favour thanks to 133 from Rob Young against Outcasts as the home team set a huge target of 227 but there was no further play after the teams had had their tea.

DIVISION THREE
The only game that was played to a conclusion was at Luddington who thumped an under strength but plucky Bottesford team by 170 runs. Darren Clark starred with the bat once again , scoring 125 not out as Luddington posted a total of 221 for 1 , Danny Taylor making 39 and Andy Lawson 39 not out as the Isle side romped to a massive total and although there were periods of drizzle it was never enough to force the teams off and Luddington went on to wrap things up by bowling Bottesford out for 51 , Matt Mellers continuing his good bowling form when taking 4 for 21. Epworth travelled to Everton 3rds and scored 105 alll out Andy Bates scoring 26 whilst Tom Mills took 3 for 37 but once again the weather intervened with Everton on 23 for 0 leaving the teams sharing a point each and finally it was no different up the road at Upton cum Kexby who had reached 70 for 2 against Barton Acadamy Vikings when they were forced off the field.

PLEASE NOTE
Clubs are reminded that Everton play their home games on a synthetic pitch and not on grass which means opponents should not wear spikes.
Clubs are also reminded that it is the responsibility of any club forfeiting a match to let the opposition and the umpires' secretary know that they are unable to raise a team.

KEEPING TRADITION ALIVE

Tomorrow night (Tues) sees the traditional friendly between Sir John Nelthorpe School and a side representing the Briggensians' Association - the Old Boys of the current comprehensive and one or two of us who are old enough to have been educated at Brigg Grammar School, which disappeared in 1976. The match is at the school in Brigg and players are asked to meet there for 6pm.
This fixture is a survivor from the era when it was quite common to see Old Boys v School being played across Lincolnshire. We usually have the Brigg one on a Friday night but this year a change has been necessary.
The call to turn out for the Old Boys only reached me last night and I know little about the line-ups, other than to say that if you are a duly qualified Old Boy of Sir John Nelthorpe School, or Brigg Grammar, and you feel like playing, or just coming along to watch, please ring Lee Fielden on 07787715825.
As a Brigg Grammar pupil in the early 1970s I can recall playing against the Old Boys, which must have been 1971/2/3. However, the fixture dates back much further than that.
We also used to have a July game between a School X1 and the Staff, which was watched by the entire school and played as an afternoon/evening game during the final week of the school year. I played in a few of those, once making a decent score as we chased down a sizeable target - but by then all the spectators had climbed on their buses and gone home.

CREDIT TO GAME AND LEAGUE

By Glen Sands, North Lindsey League

Many teams might well have thrown in the towel when faced with the prospect of taking on table-topping Luddington with only nine men but plucky Bottesford decided to play the match , much to their credit and despite suffering a hefty defeat every one of their players can hold their heads high for their determination to complete the fixture against all odds.
Skipper Dave Kilgallon put Luddington into bat, his decision being as much to do with ensuring an afternoon of sport rather than a potentially short match but his team were made to toil as Ludd openers Darren Clark and Danny Taylor batted their way to a century opening partnership. With Luddington having loaned the visitors a fielder, Bottesford never shirked in their effort, although they didn't help themselves when dropping several catches as the runs began to pile up. Clark has been in exceptional form in the Lindsey League and he rode his luck to move to yet another half-century whilst Taylor played the anchor role at the other end. Oliver Kilgallon bowled really well, far better than his figures suggested, but with several gaps in the field it was a thankless task for Bottesford who in the end conceded 221 runs and only picked up one wicket, that of Taylor who was trapped LBW by veteran Willie McVey for 39 - but it was to be Darren Clark's day, the Ludd youngster scoring a terrific 125 not out, aided by Andy Lawson at number three who made 38 not out in the drizzle.
With the damp and drizzly weatherv having stopped Bottesford set about their reply with skipper Dave Kilgallon and the newly arrived Matty Baxter at the crease but unfortunately for the latter his race to help his team after finishing work proved to be in vain as he was bowled by Graham Clark without scoring, and when Clark picked up a second wicket, that of Kilgallon who edged to wicket-keeper Steve Proctor for 17 the inevitability of a Luddington win loomed large. The only thing likely to prevent it was the weather but even that appeared a forlorn hope as Matthew Mellers then ripped through the middle order. Richard Thorpe was his first victim , caught by Andy Lawson for two then Matthew Housam who had batted bravely through a strike to the stomach and the hand was bowled by the in-form strike bowler who really is having a purple patch at the moment. He added two more wickets with a further two accurate deliveries that hit his opponents stumps but the weather was closing in and Luddington were still in need of three further wickets. However they had just the man to see them home and that man Barry O'Brien stepped up to the plate once again to produce two exceptional deliveries to bowl the stubborn Oliver Kilgallon and last man at the crease Ryan Dixon to wrap up three valuable points for the Isle side, Arron Curry chipping in with the other wicket when bowling veteran McVey for five.
So with the rain becoming more persistent, Luddington snatched victory against a team who can only be given tremendous praise for their attitude in such trying circumstances. They were sporting throughout the whole contest despite being on the wrong end of things and credit must also go to umpire Mick Walker who adjudicated sensibly all afternoon, getting the game played to a conclusion in what were far from ideal conditions at times.
Everyone involved should be complimented on their sportsmanship in what was a credit to the game of cricket.

ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY (COUL)MAN...

By Glen Sands, Outcasts' first team scorer

Outcasts made an early start to their journey to Nettleham yesterday, in order to be home in time to watch England's ignominious start to the World Cup against the USA and were rewarded with a hard-fought victory against one of the better teams in Division One.
The Isle side batted first and quickly found themselves one down when Richard Wroot was caught at slip by Martin Connor off home skipper Martin Strawson having scored just four which brought father and son combo Mark and Oliver Coulman together. In an ironic twist it was another father and son combination that saw Mark head back to the pavilion when wicket keeper David Lea took a snick to give son Danny a wicket , Coulman senior having made 21. Andy Torr and Oliver then batted well to move the total up to 74 when that same Lea combination struck again to remove Coulman junior for 25 and when Torr was bowled by Simon Grocott for 20 with just one further run on the board the whole complxtion of the game seemed to change. Suddenly runs were at a premium with no less than five maidens being bowled in a row and even though Outcasts then inched nearer to three figures batting was becoming more and more of an effort. Peter Tait was next to go , bowled by Grocott for 10 and as is often the case another wicket fell almost immediately when Simon Lewis was caught by youngster Neil off that man Grocott having also just managed double figures. Left handed pair Russell Fletcher and Tom Sharpe then took control for a few overs , moving the score on to 113 before Fletcher became Grocott's fourth victim then Sharpe , having made 16 valuable runs became his fifth , caught by Pinkney with the total on 129. Jason Whiteley and Graham Oxley added a further nine runs then Whiteley was caught in the deep by Bayliss off Grocott once again and the innings ended with the total on 139 for 9 as Nettleham failed to pick up that final wicket , although Simon Grocott's figures of 6 for 32 was a testament to his tight bowling and canny knowledge of the game.
Nettleham began their reply steadily and as was the case with Outcasts they lost an early wicket when Liam McAnaney bowled opener Mitchell with a beauty when the total stood at just six. Chris Smith joined opener David Huthcinson at the crease and in the face of some excellent tight bowling from McAnaney and Jason Whiteley they moved the scoreboard on slowly , finding runs hard to come by. Outcasts catching was on a par with that of the England goalkeeper as three catches were spilled but to their credit the Isle side did'nt drop their heads and they were rewarded when Smith was trapped LBW by Whiteley for eight with the team score on 28. David Lea then went to the middle and along with Hutchinson one might have thought they would look to push on , although that wasn't the case as they seemed to go even further into their shells. Lea took 13 overs to make just nine runs before he was bowled by another excellent delivery from McAnaney with the total on 49 but that brought Simon Grocott to the crease and he had proven to be Outcasts nemasis in previous encounters. He struck an early boundary but soon found batting just as difficult as everyone else and with Hutchinson still taking his time Nettleham were falling behind the required run rate. By now Tom Sharpe was bowling again and it was he who turned the game in the visitors favour when he bowled the danger man Grocott for 12 , leaving Nettleham on 67 for 4. That proved to be just the filip Outcasts required as they tightened their grip on the game. Martin Strawson attempted to push things on for the hosts but the ground fielding from Outcasts was exceptional and they finally took complete control when opener Hutchinson was bowled by Jason Whiteley for a hard fought 42 , the overall score standing at 81. He followed that by trapping youngster Jake Pinkney LBW very next ball which meant that Nettleham were suddenly on 81 for 6 and appeared to be in something of a state of shock. Jake Neil was next to go , run out following an terrific throw from Oliver Coulman and the writing was really on the wall when wicket keeper Graham Oxley produced a quite stunning stumping to remove Strawson for 14 , earning Tom Sharpe his second wicket of the innings. From that moment Outcasts were heading for victory which duely arrived when Sharpe wrapped things up , finishing with 4 for 38 , although both Liam McAnaney ( 2 for 28 ) and Jason Whiteley ( 3 for 39 ) should also take some credit for their outstanding bowling contribution in what was in the end a very good 20 points haul.
