BROUGHTON EVENING CRICKET LEAGUE RAINED OFF

Neither of the scheduled games were played in the Broughton Evening League on May 28th as the wet weather wiped out any hope of play at Brumby Hall between Appleby-Frodingham and Barton Town nor at Broughton who were due to host Luddington.
There is one game on June 4th when Luddington make the long trip to Barton.

HELP RECRUIT MORE UMPIRES, LINCOLNSHIRE CRICKET CLUBS URGED

The shortage of qualified umpires is hitting home this season in Lincolnshire cricket.
A good number of games are getting only one, instead of two, while for some matches it's proving impossible to appoint even a solitary official and teams are having to manage the duties as best they can.
At Lincolnshire County Cricket League meetings - attended by all clubs across the five divisions - a number of appeals have been made for more people to come forward and train to be umpires. Now the poster seen here is being sent to clubs in an effort to press home the message.
League chairman Bob Welton is asking clubs to display it on their noticeboards and  in the home and away changing rooms.
Bob says: "In my opinion it is of great importance that clubs and players realise that this year's shortage of Umpires is not just a blip and is likely to get worse as each season passes!"
That's unless, of course, more people come forward.

GRIMSBY TOWN CRICKET KNOCKOUT DRAW 2014

Grimsby treasurer Roy Roberts (r) welcoming Knock Out sponsor Anthony Winn of Handlesbanken.
BY ANN BOULTON

Champions Louth were first out of the hat in the draw for the Grimsby Town Knock Out.
Last year, Andy Carrington’s side defeated Lincolnshire Cavaliers to take the trophy for the first time and will now defend their title against Caistor in the first round of the 2014 competition – the 77th.
This match, on Monday June 2, launches the seven weeks of the competition with the final taking place on July 14.
The draw was made by Anthony Winn, manager of Handelsbanken and Steve Huke of Unite who were revealed as the new sponsors of the Knock Out and the club’s 3rd XI respectively.
Mr Winn said that his bank was delighted to take over the sponsorship.  “I come along most Monday nights to watch and I’m very pleased we’re able to support the competition,” he commented.
Unite’s sponsorship is aimed at the junior players who make up a good part of the 3rd XI.
“It’s important to encourage young people into sport and Grimsby Town has a lot of junior players,” Mr Huke explained.
It was also announced that a new team would join the Knock Out line-up.  Lincolnshire County Cricket Club applied for a place for its Development XI, giving spectators the chance to see some of the players who will make up the county team of the future.
Grimsby Town’s new treasurer Roy Roberts welcomed the sponsors and said that there were opportunities for other companies so sponsor teams and also for weekly ball sponsorship at the Knock Out.
All matches start at 6.15pm and include the usual barbecue.  Spectators are welcome - there is ample parking for cars around the boundary.

WOODHALL SPA WIN WINKWORTH CUP ORGANISED BY READERS LINCOLNSHIRE ECB PREMIER CRICKET LEAGUE

Jonathan Cheer receiving his Man of the Match award from Sarah Waldeck, director of Winkworth.

BY ANN BOULTON

Woodhall Spa are the new holders of the Winkworth Cup following an exciting final that saw Jack Luffman’s team chase down a target of 190 set by Bracebridge Heath.
Woodhall reached the final following a semi-final clash against Spalding who restricted their opponents to 147 for eight off their 20 overs despite a fine innings of 84 from Jonny Cheer.
Jack Barratt bowled an economical four overs for Spalding, taking four for 20 and when openers Warren Nel and Tim Norris put on 62 without loss, Spalding were in with a good chance of reaching their target.
But a wicket for Tom Dixon, two for Lewis Holmes and a run out reduced the challengers to 85 for four and a tight spell of bowling from Ben O’Brien put the total further out of reach.
Spalding were all out for 124 in the final over, Nel top scoring with 55.
The second semi final was a much closer affair with Bracebridge Heath piling on the runs against trophy holders Bourne.
Skipper Paul Cook hit 101 off 53 balls with 12 fours and three sixes and put on 53 for the 5th wicket with Gloucester rugby playing brother Rob.  James Keywood then claimed two Cooks in two deliveries but couldn’t complete his hat trick as Bracebridge finished on 179 for six.
Bourne got off to a flying start with a 59 partnership between Conrad Louth (34) and Peter Morgan who hit 38 off 16 balls.  The onslaught continued through Jack Berry and Carl Wilson and Bourne were always on target for a win.
But Cook had rotated his bowlers well to slow the run rate and despite the efforts of Stuart Airey (30no), Bourne fell just six short of their target, reaching 173 for five.
This set up what proved to be a big-hitting and tense final in which Vikram Atri was the stand-out batsman for Bracebridge who won the toss and elected to bat.
Atri hit 65 off 35 balls with six fours and four sixes, putting on a quickfire 77 with Paul Cook for the first wicket.  Brett Houston continued the onslaught with 38 off 25 while Dixon was the pick of the bowling with two for 24 off his four overs.
In reply, Woodhall suffered an early blow when Houston caught and bowled Ricky Lovelace with the score on 26 but Cheer and Ben O’Brien (31 off 18 balls) added 62 and Sam Evison contributed 21.
But it was the arrival of Hughes at the crease with the score on 123 and Cheer unbeaten on 63 that set Woodhall on the road to victory.  Despite some economical bowling from Carter, this pair kept the momentum going and it was Hughes who hit the winning six to finish with 41 off 17 balls while Cheer made 87 off 57.

CUP SUCCESS FOR CLEETHORPES AND BARTON IN AMAZING SMILE NORTH LINDSEY CRICKET LEAGUE ON MAY 25

READERS LINCOLNSHIRE ECB PREMIER CRICKET LEAGUE MAY 24

BY ANN BOULTON

Augusta Street in Grimsby hosted the only game to take place, not just in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League but, it would appear, throughout the whole of Lincolnshire.
League leaders Bourne made the journey to Grimsby more in hope than anticipation and at noon, the scheduled start time, things were not looking hopeful.
But umpires and players agreed to wait and at 2.30pm, after much hard work on the part of the Grimsby groundsman and both teams’ willingness to help, play began with the overs reduced from 100 to 64.
Grimsby, who lie in ninth place having secured their first win of the season the previous weekend, were invited to bat and got off to an excellent start thanks to Joe Farmery and Yamin Butt who put on 60 for the first wicket.
But the introduction of Tom Dixon to the attack saw Farmery caught for 27 and with 16 runs added, Butt followed, having hit 33.
Maninder Singh and skipper Steve Crossley both got into double figures but Dixon was on good form and went on to take six for 34 as Grimsby’s 32 overs ended on a total of 125 for seven.
Bourne also started well and had 40 on the board when Bailey Mawer bowled Pete Morgan for 31.  Conrad Louth came out to join Ben Stroud in a partnership of 43 before Stroud fell to new signing Matthew Owen for 27 and Owen then bowled incoming batsman Stuart Airey for a duck.
But this was to be Grimsby’s last success as Louth hit 31 and with Carl Wilson (24) took Bourne to a seven wicket win that increased their lead at the top of the table.

Result: Grimsby 125-7 (Dixon 6-34), Bourne 126-3; All other games cancelled.
