FEW SURVIVE BAD WEATHER

By Ann Boulton

Rain again decimated the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League programme with four games called off without a ball being bowled and the other two being abandoned after only a handful of overs.
The weather intervened with Sleaford on 34 for two off 14 overs at Hartsholme, Paul Sheppard and Martin Shillito taking the wickets. At Nettleham, Skegness had reached 16-1, Andy Carter taking the wicket, when rain stopped play.

VETERAN STILL GETTING "BUZZ" FROM CUP

By Glen Sands

FEATURED GAME
Barry "Buzzer" O'Brien (pictured) produced a real man-of-the-match performance yesterday as Luddington made a comeback of Lazarus proportions to beat Misterton 2nds and progress to the semi-finals of the North Lindsey League Third Division KO Cup.
Luddington were invited to bat first and quickly found themselves in dire trouble as Darren Emmingham and Mark Boscolo accounted for their first four batsmen with only 14 runs on the board. However, numbers five to eleven stepped up the plate with no less than five of them reaching double figures, despite being interupted twice by sharp showers, Kristian Reed hitting 17, Steve Proctor 13, Arron Curry 11, Matty Mellers 14 and the impressive O'Brien 15 not out, including one cover drive to the boundary that was right out of the Geoff Boycott book of coaching!
Luddington eventually ended their innings on 108 all-out, an incredible 20 of which came from the visitors bowling wides - an indiscipline that ulitmately cost them the game, although Emmingham, Mark and Matt Boscolo and M Denman each picked up two wickets.
Misterton's reply saw them appear to be cruising to victory until "Buzzer" and Arron Curry came on to bowl and between them they turned the game on its head. Matt Mellers bowled well, taking 2 for 27 from his statutory 10 overs, but it was O'Brien's dismissal of Emmingham when the impressive opener had reached 42 and the score stood at 66 that changed the whole direction of proceedings, Kristian Reed taking an excellent catch to send Emmingham back to the pavilion. Misterton still had their in-form number four Tim Sharpe at the crease but sadly for them he gifted a simple return catch to Arron Curry with the total on 72, and with a further 37 required to clinch what looked earlier to be a relatively comfortable win suddenly matters had taken a different course. In a complete reversal of how things had gone in the Luddington innings, Misterton's tail failed to wag at all and the evergreen O'Brien, along with Curry, went through them like a knife through butter, the Old Goole Warhorse taking an impressive 5 for 30 and Curry a splendid 3 for 7 to reduce the visitors to 88 all-out and send Luddington through to a semi-final trip to Everton 3rds on June 20th
It has to be said that this was a real topsy-turvy match with Luddington appearing down and out when standing at 14 for 4 and also when Misterton had eased to 66 for 2 but the never-say-die attitude shown by the Isle side, along with the 20 wides given away by the visitors, saw something of a Houdini-like comeback which was led by O'Brien who quite rightly took the acclaim afforded him from everyone at the ground. Who knows what further exploits are to come from this veteran of the game?

NORTH LINDSEY LEAGUE DIVISION ONE KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Cameron Fletcher hit a spectacular 129 not out for Messingham 3rds against cup holders Cleethorpes 5ths yesterdy Sunday as they posted a formidable 246 for two against the Meggies, Richard Dannatt scoring 60 and Matt Lawson 45 in the large total. And despite 75 from in-form Patrick Hughes, Cleethorpes were bowled out for 140, Sheldon Sekul taking 4 for 22 for the victors, earning them a visit to Barton Town 3rds on June 20th. Scunthorpe Town 4ths won a thriller at Heslam Park, where Appleby-Frodingham 3rds scored 163 all-out thanks chiefly to a half-century from Paul Hilton (53 not out), but Town gained a three-wicket victory with 51 from Ian Snowden and 26 not out from Umar Gondall, which means they will entertain Marshalls Sports or Caistor Cougars who were unable to play due to a wet wicket in Gainsborough.

DIVISION TWO KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Outcasts 3rds won a quite thrilling game at Brigg Rec, where the home club posted a 187 all-out, Dan Dewfall hitting 39 and Jack Siddall 31, as Alex Fletcher picked up 3 for 30. then Jamie Belton replied with 84 not out and Oliver Coulman 40 as the Isle of Axholme side won from the very last ball off the game, earning them a home tie against Grimsby Town 3rds on June 20th. Grimsby eased to a 72-run victory over Hibaldstow 2nds at Augusta Street, Maddocks hitting 93 for Grimsby who totalled 193 for 5 before Hibaldstow were bowled out for 121, Jon Taylor top scoring with 27, while Richard Evans took 3 for 17 for Town. Nick Dobbs hit 83 not out as Broughton 3rds beat Alkborough 3rds by just two wickets, reaching 150 for 8 after Alkborough managed 148 all-out. That means Broughton 3rds will host Haxey 3rds on June 20th after Wheatley & Leverton were unable to field a team to play them last week.

DIVISION THREE KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Luddington will travel to Everton 3rds in the semi-finals as they were awarded their tie against Epworth who were unable to raise a team. Jeremy Evans guided his young Barton Vikings to a hefty 79-run win over Bottesford, the skipper hitting 71 not out, along with 61 from Tom Palin before Bottesford were bowled out for 140, Dave Kilgallon scoring 52 and Matt Baxter 50, while Andy "Teggy" Tester took 5 for 34. Barton will now travel to Upton-cumKexby on June 20th.

ASIA TROPHY MAN IN GAINSBOROUGH

Bassetlaw League Marshalls CC, from Gainsborough, are pleased to announce the signing of 22-year-old Nadeem Ahmed, from Hong Kong. He is described as a quick left-arm spinner and middle-order batsman and hopes are high that he can help move the club to the next level.
Nadeem arrives with vast experience, having already made five ODI appearances and in April was leading wicket-taker in the Asia Trophy. He also appeared in two first-class matches in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, taking three wickets. He has some big names among his victims, including Pakistan batsmen Mohammad Yousuf and India's Gautam Gambhir.
A spokesman sid: "Many within the club have worked extremely hard over the winter months to bring in a player of this calibre to the club. And we hope now to send a statement to the rest of the league of serious intentions to achieve promotion in the near future."
Nadeem is now installed as senior club coach and has already started working with senior players, offering advice.
Marshalls are still on the lookout for match ball and major club sponsors. Visit their website for details through this link MARSHALLS

GET CARTER

From Ann Boulton

As there probably won't be a lot of cricket to report on today, I thought you might like the enclosed really good photo that Nigel West took during the few overs that were bowled at Nettleham. It shows Andy Carter (who has signed for Nettleham when he's not on Notts duty) bowling to Peter Houghton, of Skegness. The umpire is James Smith from Louth.

OUTCASTS 2 v OMWBY FIRST GAME OFF

Just taken the first cancellation of the day (11.11am) Outcasts 2nds v Owmby, Lincolnshire League division two. Bad news for me - I was down to umpire!
The weather forecast is not good at all for this afternoon's programme, and at 11am (the earliest point for calling off games in the Lincolnshire League) it was raining in Brigg, and doubtless other places across the county.
It could turn into one of those awkward days for captains and secretaries.
Do you:
(a) Save the opposition a long drive possibly just to sit and watch the rain come down before the umpires abandon proceedings?
Or
(b) Do you risk the possible wrath of your own players by calling a game off early, only for the rain to stop later in the afternoon?
If the umpires turn up, they have to be paid; if the opposition arrive, and hang around long enough, you might be able to serve them tea, and at least recoup £25 for club funds.
I came a cropper more than once under both (a) and (b) as a club secretary in the Lincolnshire League, as have many others down the years.

LUDD TAKE THUMPING

By Glen Sands

Fishlake and Luddington went into their Snaith Evening League Division One encounter yesterday with unbeaten records, but it was the South Yorkshire team who kept up that tag with a comprehensive victory over the Isle of Axholme side.
Luddington batted first with Simon Lewis and Jamie Belton opening the innings but and they were faced with some tight bowling alied with some astute field settings and very good fielding. Sam Mason and Phil Wood bowled well with few loose deliveries to hit and that was apparant in the scoring as Luddington progressed slowly before Belton was out, caught by Tim Elliott off first change bowler Anthony Garighan for 16. That saw in form Peter "Spud" Tait stride to the crease and along with Lewis he helped move the score along more quickly, Lewis belying his senior years with some excellent running between the wickets. Boundaries began to come as well and the score had reached 95 when Tait was bowled by slow bowler Richard Copley for 39, bringing Andy Lawson to the middle for the final few deliveries. Lewis took his own score to exactly 50, while Lawson made 15 leaving Luddington on 123 for 2 from their 20 overs, all the Fishlake bowlers bowling well despite the lack of wickets having fallen.
Fishlake's reply got off to a seering start as Josh Mason and ex-West Butterwick man David Johnson struck some terrific shots. Both players batted very well, punishing anything loose from the visitors. But with the total on 51 Johnson snicked a leg side catch to wicket keeper Jamie Belton off Simon Lewis for 35 which brought Richard Copley to the crease to join the in form Mason. There was no let-up in the barrage of boundaries as Mason in particular struck some fearful blows, taking his score to 50 not out and with Copley bludgening 25 not out the home side won the game with more than five overs remaining!
So Fishlake take their 100 per cent record to four games, while Luddington will look to get back on track when visiting Goole Town next Thursday - a ground where they have traditionally had some tough encounters in the past.

ELSEWHERE IN DIVISION ONE
Askern moved into second spot when they beat promoted Burn by the same 9 wickets at Burn, who scored 104 for 7, only for Gibbon (58) and Exley (38 not out) to guide Askern home. The other top-flight game saw Drax Village win by 7 wickets at Goole Town who posted a total of 85 all out before the visitors cruised to 89 for 3.

DIVISION TWO
Sturgethorpe gained a comfortable 8 wicket win at Carlton Towers who only managed 55 in total which the visitors surpassed comfortably, and Hensall remain second having beaten Hirst Courtney in their home fixture. Goole Firemen hit 158 against Howden Town who fell 30 runs short in reply.

DIVISION THREE
Airmyn remain early leaders thanks to their 4 wicket victory at Thorne Colliery who scored 79 all out thanks to 25 from Stewart, G Clark picking up 4 for 4 for Airmyn and the same player then made 19 not out as Airmyn reached 82 for 6 in reply, Colliery's Appleby taking 2 for 8 in a low-scoring affair. The same cannot be said of the game at Pollington who scored a tremendous 206 for 6 against Drax Village 2nds, Simon Hopkinson scoring 60 and Paul Barnes 51. Then Drax dropped anchor to make their way to 95 for 4, Daz Lawson making 35 for the Villagers.

SENIOR PLAYERS FLY THE FLAG

From Ann Boulton

After several years of success with the county Over 50s team, 2010 saw Lincolnshire launch an Over 60s side into the Spitfire National Over 60 Championship East.
A couple of experimental friendlies in 2009 convinced the Lincolnshire Cricket Board that the county could support a competitive side in this age group, with the result that earlier this month the team played its first match against Essex – and was beaten by 10 wickets!
However, a trip to Letchworth brought a seven-wicket victory over Hertfordshire in the second fixture with Bob Leafe and Keith West sharing a match winning unbeaten partnership of 153. Leafe hit 83 off 93 balls with 14 fours, while West’s 82 came off just 65 balls with 14 fours and a six.
Norfolk are the next opponents, this game taking place at Mattishall CC. The O60s are then at home for their next two matches, taking on Hertfordshire again on 8th June at Billingborough CC and Suffolk at Boston on 15th, both starting at 1.30pm.

Lincolnshire Over 50s got their season off to a good start with a win over Huntingdonshire at Boston.
Playing in Group 2 the ECB 50+ County Championship, Lincs had Neil Calvert and Mark Roberts to thank for their six wicket victory, Roberts hitting an unbeaten 117.
Lincs won the toss and elected to field but had to contend with a strong Hunts top order, Robert Milne hitting 56 and number four Barry Morris finishing 59 not out as the visitors ended their 45 overs on 243 for seven.
The home side then lost their first two wickets for 28 runs but Calvert and Simon Lewis added 60 and when Lewis was out for 29, Calvert and Roberts joined forces to take Lincs within sight of victory.
Calvert was caught behind for 50 but Roberts made no mistake as Lincs claimed their win with three overs to spare.
The O50s next match is against Northamptonshire at Alford on June 2 at 2pm. The team then has two away matches, against Leicestershire & Rutland and Bedfordshire.

FIRST TIE IN ECB LEAGUE

By Ann Boulton

The first tie of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League season was played out at Louth where, despite New Zealand star Josh Brodie making his comeback with an innings of 63, Lindum were restricted to 167 for nine off their 50 overs.
Louth batted steadily until they were on equal terms with their visitors with one wicket standing but were unable to score the vital winning run, losing their last batsman with eight balls to go of the match.
League newcomers Boston are rapidly becoming the team to watch for the unexpected result – on this occasion a five wicket win over second-placed Grimsby at Augusta Street. Top score of the day went once again to Boston opener Jonathan Cheer who hit a massive 133 as his side chased down Grimsby’s 227 for nine of which Richard Antcliffe made 66.
There were also celebrations at Bourne where the home side recorded their first win of the season, beating Nettleham by four wickets after the visitors had finished on 227 for six. Andrew Hibberd added another 75 to his growing runs tally while for Bourne, Conrad Louth was unbeaten on 88 and Charlie Hopkins hit 76.
Bracebridge Heath marched on at the top of the table after being bowled out for 238 by Sleaford, Nick John scoring 56. In reply, Oliver Burford hit the day’s only other century with 110 but couldn’t prevent his side going down by 61 runs. This defeat means that the London Road side, who rose three places to third last week, have slipped back down to sixth.
Woodhall Spa looked set for high score when they raced to 104 without loss off 12 overs at Market Deeping, only to be bowled out for 214, Nick Cowley taking five for 54. Deeping then knocked the runs off for the loss of only three wickets. Four half centuries were scored in this match, Sam Evison (57) and Ricky Lovelace (52) for Woodhall and Charlie Kearns (56) and David Gillett (62no) for Market Deeping.
Skegness hit the highest individual score of the day with 285 for seven, Peter Houghton making 72 and Saeed Bariwala 55. This proved too big a challenge for Hartsholme who were bowled out for 200, Nathan Poundall scoring 67 and Roald Badenhorst (pictured) taking six for 37.

RESULTS
Woodhall Spa 214 (Evison 57, Lovelace 52, Cowley 5-54), Market Deeping 217-3 (C Kearns 56, Gillett 62no); Nettleham 227-6 (Hibberd 75), Bourne 231-6 (Louth 88no, Hopkins 76); Bracebridge Heath 238 (John 56), Sleaford 177 (Burford 110, Onyon 5-47);

NOTTS AT CLEETHORPES MEMORIES

From Andy Genney, Barton Town

If it's the fixture I remember then there was another first class umpire playing that day, Neil Mallender, then a Northants quickie. I'm guessing that puts the date at somewhere in the early eighties. I was there with my dad, Terry Genney, and Bob Welton, at around the time they were both turning out for Normanby Park. Bob pointed out 'Ghostie' Mallender and I went to get his autograph as he fielded at fine leg.
I also remember a Notts v New Zealand fixture at Chichester Road as part of the great Richard Hadlee's testimonial year. The crowd that day witnessed the rare sight of Derek Randall missing a catching chance. The NZ batsman hit a towering skier towards Randall at mid-off, he circled under it briefly then at the last moment thrust his hands behind his back, shook his head and jumped backwards out of the way, much to the crowd's amusement.

SORRY TO MISS IT

Cricket has indeed returned to Carrside, Epworth, where yesterday's North Lindsey League match with Misterton went ahead, the ground being judged fit for purpose after a long lay-off.
I was hoping to be there to umpire with George Armstrong, from Broughton, but the late lure of a day's paid work proved too much and I had to reluctantly cancel the appointment.
If anyone from the LCB/ECB is reading this, perhaps they might be able to offer some assistance/guidance to Epworth, through the North Lindsey League. It's great to see cricket returning to one of Lincolnshire's most historic locations - Epworth being the birthplace of Methodism, home of the Wesleys, etc.

NOTTS LANDING

Perhaps a word of explanation is in order after last week's posting about Cleethorpes CC staging a Notts 2nd X1 fixture, as it strikes me younger cricketers in our fair county might be a shade puzzled.
Thousands of folk from the Midlands city used to flock to the east coast resort after the coming of the railways, and a reduced number still do, although perhaps more for a day or weekend now than for a full week's holiday.
There's still a pub called The Nottingham just off the seafront.
Cleethorpes CC have staged Notts first class, first team fixtures in the past, and some one-dayers. I remember watching the Sultan of Reverse Swing, Sarfraz Nawaz, play there, along with The Hon Tim Lamb, later to become the games's top administrator at Lord's. I think they were with Northants at the time. George Sharp, now a leading first class umpire, would have been behind the stumps.
Long may the links with Trent Bridge continue.

SOUNDS FISHY!

Messingham first team bowler John West is nicknamed Tuna.
He looks a decent bowler and clearly delivers exactly what it says on the tin for his skipper!
Sorry, isn't skipper a type of fish, too?

DAZZLING DAZZER'S BOUNDARY BARRAGE

By Glen Sands

Luddington went into today's game against table-topping Barton Academy Vikings expecting a tough encounter - but in the end they ran out comfortable winners against a young Barton side who simply didn't perform to the best of their ability.
The Vikings batted first and suffered an early blow when opener Barnes had to retire with a back injury and his replacement Shreeve failed to get off the mark before he was caught at slip by Andy Lawson off the bowling of Matthew Mellers with the overall score on just six. David Bishop was next to go, bowled by the impressive Mellers who bowled an incredible 14 straight overs in the searing heat. Then, with the score on 23, he picked up a third wicket when bowling Matt Waller for 6. In form opener Bradley Graves, who hit a century just two weeks ago, had made only seven when he was superbly run out by quicksilver Arron Curry, but the Humbersiders then hit back with a stand of 44 between Nathan Jones and skipper Jeremy Evans as the game looked set to swing in their favour. Jones had reached 27 when he was bowled by the wily Barry O'Brien, and with the partnership broken Ludd began to pick up wickets on a regular basis. O'Brien had Steeper caught by Jimmy (Jonty) Roe and followed that by having the returning opener Barnes caught behind by Darren Clark for seven as the Vikings slipped to 93 for 8. Evans managed to keep the strike for a while and took the total past three figures, then number 10 Luke Waller was suckered into a second run by old head Kev Emerson, standing in for the injured Steve Proctor, and the innings finished on 114 all-out when Graham Clark took his first wicket to leave Evans on a defiant 43 not out, Mellers and O'Brien taking the bowling honours with 3 for 39 and 3 for 42 respectively.
The brothers Clark opened the innings for Luddington and from the start they batted really well against some rather lacklustre bowling.
Darren, in particular, was in fantastic form as he crashed the ball to all parts.
Brother Graham was somewhat more circumspect, reaching 20 before edging a catch to wicketkeeper Matt Waller off the bowling of his brother Jake, with the score on 75. Kristian Reed lasted just two deliveries before Waller took his second wicket, but Kev Emerson strode to the crease in yet another comeback and instantly saw Darren reach his half-century.
The boundary barrage continued from the dazzling Clark who ended the game on 79 not out.
But shot of the day had to be the perfectly excecuted on drive by Emerson who looked as if he had never retired as he eased to six not out.
So Luddington gained a terrific win against one of their likely rivals for the top-of-the-table slot with Darren Clark adding to his 71 against Upton a week earlier with another outstanding contribution. But it was a disappointing match for the visitors who just didn't produce a performance, much to the displeasure of skipper Jeremy Evans who was the only contributor for the Vikings on this occasion.
Next Sunday will see Luddington take on Misterton 2nds in the Cup, whilst Barton host Bottesford in the same competition - hoping for a stronger performance.

MESSINGHAM CATERING IS HOT

The teas served up at Messingham for yesterday's George Marshall Trophy first round tie with South Kelsey were of the very highest standard, including hot chunky sausages, chips, pasta, salad, gateaux ...You name it!
The general standard of catering at club matches, in our opinion, is now very high indeed. And not just in the Lincs League.
The days of long ago when you sometimes sat in the sweaty confines of the changing rooms to nibble on a couple of butties are long gone.
Often, clubs provide a gift at the end of the season as a thank-you to those on the catering rota. But it would be good to see the tea ladies (and men) rewarded for their efforts on a wider front. Perhaps with trophies from the respective leagues. Of course there would have to be some way of judging. Usually, finding folk to carry out any administrative tasks proves difficult. But in this case we could imagine many in local cricket forming an orderly queue to volunteer for duty!

CONCENTRATING ON THE LEAGUE

By Glen Sands

Last season's beaten finalists Appleby-Frodingham 2nds might well have expected a tough game at Hirst Priory against an Outcasts side that had played so well a week earlier in gaining their first win of the season, but the Steelmen cruised to a comfortable victory on the hottest day of the year so far to ease into the second round.
Outcasts won the toss and chose to bat on what appeared to be a real belter of a wicket but they just couldn't get any momentum into their innings as Frod's young guns bowled a tight line that shackled the Isle side throughout. Father and son Mark and Oliver Coulman opened the innings and took the total to 23 before the first wicket fell, Mark being trapped LBW by Paul Hilton for 10, whilst son Oliver, who hit his maiden century a week earlier in the North Lindsey League, was next to go, bowled by Mohammed Ayub for 23, with the score on 39. Try as they might the Isle side just couldn't put together a really decent partnership and the next wicket went with the total on 58 when Graham Clark snicked a catch down legside to keeper Ben Taylor, off Ben Bramley, having just reached double figures. Andy Torr stretched to reach a wide delivery from the out-of-touch Kieron Watson and feathered a second catch to Taylor, having scored 14. Then Craig McAnaney was bowled by a good delivery from David Pickersgill for 12, leaving Outcasts on 97 for 5. Simon Lewis had batted reasonably well for his 27, only to spiral a catch to old adversary Mick Bramley, off the bowling of Pickersgill. And when David Hobson was next to go for four, stumped by the impressive Taylor off Jack Forrester, the Priorymen were 118 for 7 and looking incapable of setting a testing target for the Steelmen. Sure enough the last three wickets all fell with the total on 123 as Paul Hilton returned to wrap things up.
The App-Frod reply got off to a rocky start when Watson was superbly run out following a terrific throw from Graham Clark. Then skipper Adam Barker flicked a straight-forward catch to Jason Whiteley at backward square, off Matthew Teal, and just for a mopment with the score at 15 for 2 the home side might have thought they had a chance. But that was quickly dispelled when Ben Taylor and Mick Bramley batted them out of the match with sensible and ultimately confident displays. Both batsmen took every opportunity to hit bad deliveries when they came along, coupled with some excellent defensive play. And as the heat of the day began to take its toll, Frod simply cruised to a comfortable 8 wicket win, Taylor scoring a majestic 64 not out and Bramley an unbeaten 48.
So Outcasts are left to concentrate on the league, a task which might well prove to be quite tough unless they can pick up their form, whilst Frod are on the cup trail again with a second round trip to Caistor Town to look forward to next month.

TIMELY REMINDER

The umpires' assocations are requesting all teams taking part in this afternoon's first round ties in the George Marshall Trophy and Bob Welton Cup mark the umpires. In past seasons this has not been the case for cup-ties, but this campaign has seen the introduction of umpires' marks for division one, two, three and four for the first time.
At the April pre-season meeting, the umpires' representatives were asked for their views on whether, or not, marks should be given for cup-ties. The answer was Yes, they would like to see marks given.
If you are reading this AFTER Saturday's cup-ties and/or AFTER posting off the scoresheet, and haven't given marks to the umpires, we'll be happy to accept them by email to scoopfisher@aol.com or leave a message on 01652 655134.

ANOTHER 'CHANDI' PERFORMANCE

LOVE MATCH FOR LOL

From Peter Thompson

It was all romantic and just perfect...marriage on a distant shore for South Kelsey Cricket Club first team captain Lol Waghorn.
Lol, from North Kelsey, and his bride Emma Uzzell, from Lincoln, flew out to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and having spent the required three working days there got married on a pier on the beach.
Lol said: "The hotel organised us a reception on the wedding night. They booked us a table in their a la carte restaurant with Champagne and a wedding cake. We spent the rest of our fortnight relaxing in the hot sunshine enjoying the Jamaican cuisine and Red Stripe beer. We found out just before we went that Emma was expecting our first child, which is due just after the end of the season. Just perfect!" said Lol.

ERN-ING RESPECT

Caistor stalwart Wes Allison says his club's catching them young. "On a Friday night we have over 50 kids down for training from the age of eight to 11 - and 12 of them are girls," he explains. The top picture shows some of this enthusiastic bunch with their coaches.
Wes has also forwarded a team line-up of the Caistor U13 B team, and one of Caistor 3rds, who play in Lincolnshire League division four. They are skippered by popular off-spinner Ernie Allison (centre, front) who's one of the most senior seniors in our 50-team county competition. Typical of teams in the lower ranks of the Lincs League, Ern's side is a mixture of youth (keen to learn about the club game) and experience (willing to pass on a few tips and offer advice). Having to share a ground with the 1sts (Lincs League premier) and the 2nds (division two) means Ern's team don't often get the chance to play at home on a Saturday, with the majority of Brigg Road fixtures being rescheduled for Sundays and bank holiday Mondays.

NOTTS 2nds PLAY AT CHICHESTER ROAD

Gareth Cross celebrates reaching his hundred for Lancashire.

Picture and report from Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes CC played host to Nottingham County Cricket Club this week for their second X1 Championship game at home to Lancashire. The visitors, who included Ex-Grimsby Town reserve goalkeeper Gary Montgomery in their side, ran out comfortable winners by 144 runs after setting Nottinghamshire a daunting 340 runs for victory. Both sides made full use of the ball with 18 wickets falling on the first day. Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat but were shot out by tea for 224. Two players with strong Lincolnshire connections, Andy Carter and Jonny Miles, inflicting most of the damage with three wickets apiece. But by the close the Lancashire seamers were having their revenge as Notts limped to 111-8 by the close. They were eventually bowled out for 148 with Montgomery showing a good turn of pace as the left hander finished with 3/56 in 17 overs. Both he and opening partner Steve Cheetham troubled the Notts batsmen with their pace, bounce and movement. With a healthy 76-run first innings advantage, Lancashire went for their shots in the second innings, especially wicketkeeper Gareth Cross who completed a superb century. The Notts bowlers, though, stuck to their task and Lancashire were bowled out for 263 just before tea to leave a testing target. With some thirty overs to negotiate on the second evening, Notts lost four wickets before close of play and the Lancs seamers made light work of wrapping up the victory by lunch on the third day with Notts all out for 195. Only 64 from Akhit Patel, brother of former England batsman Samit, held Lancs at bay for any length of time. Montgomery was unlucky to pick up only the one wicket while Cheetham bagged an impressive 5/62.

MEGGIES FACE EX-ENGLAND STAR

Alex Tudor drops James Osmond (main picture).

Report and pictures by Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes 1st X1’s disappointing start to the 2010 campaign continued last weekend with defeats to Barnsley and the West Indian Cavaliers in the league and ECB National Knockout respectively.
Saturday’s home defeat to a strong Barnsley side came after a much improved batting performance that but for one pivotal moment may have seen Cleethorpes post a much larger total. Overseas player Peter Fulton had overcome a cautious start and was just starting to blossom, having hit 46, when he fell run out to a direct throw from the boundary, leaving Cleethorpes having to rebuild their innings. His knock of 46 in 72 balls (six 4s and a six) had given members their first look at his quality. James Windeatt hit a promising 28 and a late flurry from Richard Griffin, with 39 in 52 balls, finally took Cleethorpes to their closing total of 190-8 in 55 overs on a wicket that offered Barnsley’s bowlers assistance throughout. It had been a tough baptism for debutant Yaniv Judah with Yorkshire opening bowler Oliver Hannon-Dalby in the Barnsley ranks. After surviving his early onslaught he was given lbw to a delivery that jagged back in. Alex Osmond (14) , Bill Kirby (13) and Rob Griffin (13) all got start but were unable to capitalize.
In reply, Cleethorpes made early inroads into the Barnsley batting with Cleethorpes opening with Alex Osmond’s leg-spin. Osmond removed the dangerous Widdup for 8 before a sharp run out by Bill Kirby left Barnsley 21-2. Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance started to knock the ball around confidently as he and Nuttall added 58 before Harry Clewett took an excellent return catch. Cleethorpes luck was out as Yates chanced his arm time and time again but another fifty stand was taking the game away before Osmond’s second wicket courtesy of his brother's stumping gave Clee hope. However it was not to be as Wilkinson relieved any pressuer that had been building with a six and two fours supporting Ballance as they took Barnsley to their winning total in the 50th over. Balance remained 89 not out. Osmond had been the pick of the bowling with 2/74 in a marathon 23-over spell with Harry Clewett claiming 1/59 in 14 overs.

Sunday saw Cleethorpes bow out of the ECB National Knockout to the West Indian Cavaliers. After being asked to bat first they collapsed to 59-7 before recovering to a modest 129 all-out. Only a stand of 52 between Harry Clewett (26) and Jack Harrison (25) had helped Cleethorpes recover, while Charlie Tomlinson had earlier hit a positive 27 as wickets clattered around him. The Cavaliers bowling attack had been lead by Ex-England and Surrey bowler Alex Tudor (above) with Zimbabwean Tinashe Panyangara his opening partner and the pair ripped through a top order deprives of Bill Kirby and Alex Osmond, away on Lincs county duty and Peter Fulton who was ineligible for the competition. Cavaliers wasted little time reaching their target of 130 despite Jack Harrison striking a blow in the first over of their reply. Morteza Ali hit 80 not out in just 53 balls including 11 fours and five enormous sixes as they raced to victory in 16.3 overs for the loss of just two wickets. Harrison (1/27 in 4) and Harry Clewett (1/20 in 3) were Cleethorpes successful bowlers.
Cleethorpes 2nd X1 recorded a excellent 20-point win at Scunthorpe Town last Saturday. After bowling Scunthorpe out for 149 in the 40th over they reached their ttarget for the loss of six wickets after 35.5 overs. A good all round bowling display saw three Clee bowlers pick up three wickets. Kris Adams (3/42 in 13) knocked over the top order, while spin twins Stuart Harvey (3/34 in 10.3) and Lewis Markham (3/32 in 7) mopped up the tail. Nathan Judah was the other wicket taker with 1/31 in 9 opening overs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals Callum Robinson (37) and Joe Farmery (36 not out) led Cleethorpes to victory with contributions from Elliott Drinkell (23), Fred Lumby (19) and Skipper Paul Sunley (16).
Cleethorpes 4ths fell to a heavy 144-run defeat at Market Rasen last Saturday. Rasen’s mammoth 287-2 in 45 overs proved far too many for a young Clee side whose only successful bowler was John Mansfield with 2/88 in 13 overs. Will Abe’s 59 not out backed up by Ben Marris (31) and Bob Leafe (24) took Cleethorpes to two batting points in a disappointing performance from Kris Richardson’s side.
Sunday saw Cleethorpes' North Lindsey X1 claim a good win at Barton Town. After bowling Barton out for 162 in the 36th over, Cleethorpes took just 34.4 overs to seal victory lead by Patrick Hughes’ 78 with Kris Richardson hitting 30 and youngster Jack Gibson contributing a very good 25. Young spinner George Hawkey had been the pick of the Meggies bowlers with 3/33 in his 8 overs while Lewis Markham (2/19 in 4.2) and Richard Woodward (2/25 in 5) ensured Barton were pegged back. Matty Owen and Mike Shelton also picked up a wicket apiece.
Tomorrow, Cleethorpes 1st X1 look to return to winning ways in the local derby at near neighbours Appleby-Frodingham in the Yorkshire Premier league. Clethorpes 2nd and 3rd X1’s are in cup action. The 2nd X1 entertain Market Rasen at Chichester Road in the George Marshall Trophy first round (1.30pm start), while the 3rds travel to Caistor 2nds in the 1st round of their defence of the Bob Welton Cup. They then face Alford at Chichester Road on Sunday (1.30pm start) in only their second league outing of the season. Cleethorpes' North Lindsey side travel to Marshalls of Gainsborough, with the Academy X1 taking on Southbank in the East Lindsey League at the Stamford Club (2pm start).

In the meantime, spectators and supporters are very welcome to the Winkworth Cup finals on Bank Holiday Monday, an excellent day’s cricket that has been hosted by Sleaford for several years. There is ample parking around the ground and drinks and refreshments will be available in the clubhouse.

THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT

Reading Glen Sands' regular reports of the fine and enjoyable cricket being played in the Snaith District Evening League and noting how the Grimsby Midweek League can still boast seven divisions, leaves me, and I'm sure many others, very disappointed that the Scunthorpe area no longer has a similar competition for senior clubs. The West Wold League also continues to serve West Lindsey teams - and there are others dotted about.
It's a good few years now since the Broughton and District Evening League called it a day, having latterly been reduced to a single division from its zenith of three thriving sections, plus a KO Cup.
The Broughton Evening League, for many years, ran alongside the Scunthorpe Midweek Friendly League, which is still going. The BEL was for regular club cricket sides; the Friendy League generally comprising company and office sides (eg Singleton Birch, Clover Dairies, Tarmac, and even the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph for a time).
When my In A Spin column was going in the "Scun Tel" we made several efforts over the years to kickstart interest in re-establishing a midweek league serving the Scunthorpe area and the Isle of Axholme (there was once an Isle of Axholme Evening League, too).
Bottesford Town stalwart Dave Willey showed interest, having served the Broughton Evening League as an official, but few others came forward to pledge themselves to the cause.
The argument trotted out is there's a great deal of youth cricket these days in the Scunthorpe area and club sides would reply on the U19s for midweek league teams. To which I would reply: That's always been the case - and Grimsby and Snaith seem to manage perfectly well, in identical situations.
In terms of "getting off from work" to play night cricket midweek, there's certainly not the issue there was in the 1970s and 1980s when many were employed on the 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm and 10pm-6am shifts. As the steel industry has steadily reduced the number employed, service industries have come into the area - many of which are not 24-hour, round-the-clock enterprises and, instead, have less anti-social working hours more beneficial to playing cricket.
We welcome your thoughts on the issue! If sufficient pledge themselves to the cause, we might operate off our own bat and try to get a meeting together to form a Scunthorpe competition. I don't think the admin would prove too much of a problem. Clubs just need to commit to it.

PICTURED: Bottesford stalwart Dave Willey (left) alongside Andy Sharp. Dave was a stalwart supporter of the Broughton Evening League, also playing in the Gainsborough competition for Blyton. Andy, having played much club cricket in the Scunthorpe area, is now with Keelby CC. He's still performing in the Grimsby Midweek League. The picture was taken at a night match at Brigg Rec. Sadly, not a league encounter but a friendly.

AWESOME DISPLAY OF HITTING

By Glen Sands

Luddington finally managed to take to the field for the first time this year last night, following a rained off game at Askern and a cancelled one due to their opponents being unable to field a team.
Ludd picked up a hard-earned win over Division Two champions Burn, in what was a very sporting and enjoyable match.
Burn batted first and made a decent start, racing to 31 off five overs before Adamson was caught by Graeme Fletcher off Liam McAnaney for 10 - and with just two further runs added fellow opener Ed Clark was back in the hutch, having edged a catch to wicketkeeper Jamie Belton (pictured) off the bowling of Jonathan Wroot for 21. Mark Webster and Nick Croad then put together a partnership of 38 despite some excellent bowling from the impressive Wroot and Graeme Fletcher, but it was spin bowler Craig McAnaney who broke the pair when Croad was caught by Russell Fletcher for 11 and Webster quickly followed when he had reached 25, caught by Matthew Teal off Graeme Fletcher, who deserved his wicket. A Watson and D Adamson then took the score past three figures before Watson was caught by Liam McAnaney off Peter Tait for 24 and two further wickets fell on 105 as Burn went in search of quick runs, Craig McAnaney picking up a second with two run-outs to bring the final 20-over total to 108 for 8 for the visitors.
Luddington's reply began rather slowly as Jamie Belton and Darren Clark were made to fight for every run by the Burn opening bowlers Jake Webster and Nick Croad. Belton had reached just three when he was caught by Ray Adamson off Webster with the score on 14 - and when Clark was dismissed for eight, bowled by the excellent Webster, Ludd were rocking a little on 26 for 2.
However, stand-in skipper Andy Lawson took the game away from the visitors with an awesome display of hitting.
And even though he was out for 22 his battering of the bowling changed the flow of the game. Peter Tait, in at number three, batted just as well for the Isle side and ultimately won the game with a majestic 58 not out, aided by Russell Fletcher who farmed the strike to him with a staedy 12 not out as Luddington made their way to 112 for 3 with a couple of overs to spare.
So the teams retired to the River Don at Eastoft for curry and chips, happy in the knowledge that they had both played their part in a very entertaining game.
Next up for Luddington is a daunting away trip to Fishlake whilst Burn play hosts to Askern who will be smarting from their first defeat of the season, having lost to Fishlake by just three runs yesterday.

CHANGES AT BRIGG

Lee Fielden has resigned as Brigg Town Cricket Club first team captain. The new skipper of the Lincs League division four side is Dylan Hildreth and the new vice-captain Jack Richards. The Under-17s have dropped out of the Scunthorpe League.

HIBALDSTOW STARTS JUNIOR SECTION

By Jon Taylor

Hibaldstow CC has, for the first time since anyone at the club can remember, entered a junior team in local cricket leagues. The original plan had been to prepare for running a team from the 2011 season, but the sad news that Brigg U13 would not have a manager or coach presented us with the opportunity to take on the junior section a year earlier than planned.
Barry Cowling will manage the team. The senior squad will help the youngsters parents with coaching, borrowing many of the training drills learnt by Jon Taylor whilst watching the successful Scunthorpe Academy (where his son Joe plays).
Training is running at the village playing fields on Wednesday evenings from 6pm, prospective players and their parents are very welcome. Home matches will also be played at Hibaldstow.
The side had their first match on Monday night, coming second away to a strong App-frod team.
Over the coming months the club will be putting in place the cornerstones needed to move towards full accreditation and hopefully a strong and successful club with both senior and junior sections. Meanwhile, with the help of the club and the parents, the team plays on.

RISING COST OF CRICKET

We are not having a dig at the ECB, but myself (and most other umpires) have just received, by post, a colourful catalogue outlining the range of cricket equipment being marketed under the banner of our governing body. I note it now costs the best part of £50 for a pair of batting gloves.
Just as well I retired when I did (six years ago)!
My second-hand Newberry bat lasted the best part of 15 years and saw me to the end of an uneventful career. It still comes out of the garage for the annual August bank holiday charity match and for Brigg Grammar Old Boys v Sir John Nelthorpe School (now my only two guaranteed appearances).
Prior to getting the Newberry from "our kid" when he retired, I only bought two other bats - both Slazengers - in 30 years. The second (one of those you had to linseed) split down the middle while I was playing a typical forward defensive prod. The other was one of the early breed of coated bats, and came in a plastic sleeve saying it was used by the likes of Gary Sobers, Rohan Kanhai and Zaheer Abbas.
I'm old enough to remember when players didn't own their own kit; there was a communal supply in a bag, belonging to the club. The youngest players got given the pads missing the buckles (no Velcro straps!).
At the height of my wealth in the mid-1980s (before Mrs F and the three kids came along, in that order) I was covering Minor Counties cricket, home and away, and decided to buy one of those impressive new "coffins" used by Lincolnshire Minor Counties squad members, such as my good mates Richard Leslie Burton (RM) and Dave Marshall (SLA).
I think Dick got me a good deal through one of his many contacts and I proudly took it along to Brocklesby Park for a friendly, only to find the box duly banished from the admittedly small "home" changing room, with the instruction never to bring it again, as it took up far too much space. So I sold it on to batsman Paddy Kenny, then playing for Appleby-Frodingham; he had it for many years.
Earlier, Brigg Town 2nd X1's pads and bats used to be stuffed into a black dustbin bag and squeezed into the boot of my Mini 1000 for away games. It really was cricket on a shoestring at that time, as far as our club was concerned.
Clearly, enough players today are prepared to pay approaching £50 for a pair of batting gloves. If that's the going rate, fair enough. There's some very impressive kit on offer in the ECB catalogue, and anyone would be proud to own it.
But back in the 1970s and 1980s the club's total outlay on kit for the entire season wouldn't have come to anywhere near fifty quid, including match balls!
These days all young players seem to have a mobile phone hanging off their ear in the pavilion; when I started in Lincs club cricket in the mid-1970s we (like many households) didn't have a phone in the house, never mind a mobile. Once the selection committee had met in the designated pub, the captain, or secretary, would push a postcard through the door telling you of your selection for Saturday.
A number of clubs operated the policy that you had to buy a copy of the local paper (daily or weekly) to find out if you'd been picked, as they merely submitted the teams for inclusion on the sports pages and left it at that.
The game's certainly changed!

PAUL'S YOUR MAN

Just to make it clear following an earlier post, Paul Hostad is overseeing the Grimsby League's Saturday Knockout Cup; the Ibwest (Midweek) Cup is my domain, even though Lincs Cricket Latest posted something ahead of this weekend's opening fixture. Teams should inform Paul of results and highlights.

WORKING ON YOUR BEHALF

The Lincolnshire County Cricket League's Online Results and Registrations Working Party held its first meeting on Monday night, in Brigg, with a mandate from the Executive Committee to prepare a report on the possibility of inputting all scorecards, match results (to generate tables) and registrations onto the league's Play Cricket website, removing the need for scoresheets and paper registration forms.
It was a very constructive meeting, but it would be wrong to reveal any of the discussions, findings or recommendations at this stage through Lincs Cricket Latest.
A report from the Working Party is being prepared for consideration at the mid-July meeting in Market Rasen, in line with the mandate given.
Graham Hackney (Cleethorpes), Mick Barton (Stamford Homes), Andy Sharp (Keelby/League Statistician) and Mark Atkins and Danny Bullock (Haxey) were thanked for giving up their valuable time to attend, and for their positive input.
Graham even brought along his laptop computer and logged onto the ECB's Play Cricket domain so those less familiar with it (me!) could grasp some of the finer points. Meanwhile, Mark had Blackberry in hand!
I struggle with texting on a ordinary mobile phone.
PS Just to make it clear: Nothing can be introduced for this season; scoresheets remain, scores still need to be rung through, and players registered on paper forms.

GY SATURDAY CUP BEGINS

The John Pettit Grimsby and District Cricket League's Saturday League Cup gets under way this weekend.

SUNDAY, MAY 23 - PRELIM ROUND

North Thoresby v Harvest Moon.

SEARLE-Y SEASON GOOD FORM

Worthy performances sometimes get overshadowed by other events. Hopefully this won't prove the case with keeper Mike Searle's three catches and two stumpings for Louth 2nds at Outcasts in Lincs League division one on Saturday. The scoresheet arrived today in the post and makes impressive reading, Mike accounting for Oliver and Marc Coulman, Dave Hobson, Craig McAnaney and Matthew Teal. Two of those victims got their own back, however, with Mark Coulman catching the Louth keeper for eight, off Craig McAnaney's bowling. As regular Lincs Cricket Latest followers will be aware, Outcasts won this game to end a run of early defeats.

EPWORTH OPENER

Epworth has put a side back in the North Lindsey League, and this Sunday should see them host Misterton. Well-known Isle of Axholme cricket official Martin Thompson has been working behind the scenes for Epworth - Home of the Wesleys, and now Home of Cricket once again.

NETTLEHAM INCH HOME

By Ann Boulton

A high-scoring game at Mulsanne Park saw Nettleham claim their first victory of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League season with just four balls of the game to spare.
Warren Nel batted 50 overs for his unbeaten 130, putting on 155 for the first wicket with Andrew Hibbert (61) as the home side chased down Louth’s challenging total of 256 for nine, Jim Morgan making 68 and Graham West 56 for the visitors.
This leaves Louth anchored at the foot of the table on equal terms with Bourne who went down to Skegness by six wickets despite showing an improvement in their batting to reach 199 for eight. Carl Wilson then hit an unbeaten 57 for the seasiders who moved into the top six.
Hartsholme succeeded in bowling out leaders Bracebridge Heath for 227 on the last ball of the innings, collecting a valuable five points before themselves being bowled out for 112.
Grimsby stay second after a winning draw at Woodhall Spa, who lost eight wickets as they fell 32 runs short of their visitors’ total of 217 for nine, while Sleaford went from sixth to third despite losing seven wickets chasing Boston’s modest total of 141.
This Sleaford victory denied Lindum a move back up from fourth despite their seven wicket win over Market Deeping which earned them 20 points. Three batsmen from the Lincoln side made half centuries, Geoff Middleton top scoring with an unbeaten 70.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF KEXBY KIND

By Glen Sands

Luddington won their first points of the season yesterday in what proved to be a thoroughly entertaining encounter against an Upton cum Kexby side who are beginning to find their feet now after three seasons in the North Lindsey League.
Ludd batted first on a cold and blustery day and quickly found themselves one down when Danny Taylor was bowled by Alsop for just a couple and when Geoff Smith followed suit, this time well caught by Hayden Green in gully off Nathan Plumtree Ludd were 33 for 2. Andy Lawson joined opener Darren Clark and suddenly the run rate raced away from the visitors, Lawson in his own spectacular style, reaching 24 in no time before he inexplicably missed a full toss from Spencer and became third man out with the score on 81. That certainly gave Upton a filip and they hit back to pick up further wickets as Gareth Parkin, Oliver Saxon and Arron Curry all failed to trouble the scorers but all this time opener Clark was batting superbly at the other end and when joined by Steve Proctor they steadied things to take Ludd past three figures. Clark brought up his own half century, then came another twist when Proctor, having been advised earlier by umpire Brian Cross that he was batting outside his off stump was then trapped LBW by Green for six and duely admonished by Crossy for not having listened to him ! Clark eventually sacrificed his wicket when being bowled for 71 and at the end of the innings Barry O'Brien treated the Luddington version of the Headingly Terrace with a couple of unauthodox boundaries as they closed on 139 all out, Hayden Green finishing with 3 for 44, whilst Spencer and Birkett took two each for the visitors.
Upton's response saw them have to battle for every run early in the innings and they soon lost opener Clay, caught behind by Steve Proctor off the ever dependable O'Brien for 11 then Hayden Green offered a simple catch to Darren Clark off Matt Mellers having eased to nine and Upton stood at 27 for 2. Jimmy Snee had set his stall out to bat through but played a rare loose shot to O'Brien and was pouched by Jimmy "Buckets" Roe in gully for 13, and when two further wickets fell quickly Upton's resistence appeared to be waining. Howver Spencer and Bray got them back on track with some excellent batting and just as they appeared set to put the visitors back in pole position Darren Clark took the most spectacular of tumbling catches in the deep off the bowling of Arron Curry to send Spencer back to the hutch for 19 and the game was in the balance once more.Curry then bowled Bray for 14 and followed that up by douing the same to Lesley, then he collected a simple caught and bowled off Will Cawte to leave Upton on 100 for 9 and all seemed lost but once again the Gainsborough outfit refused to give in and last pair Nathan Plumtree along with Alsop gradually inched their way toward the Luddington total until they attempted a very quick single which saw Plumtree run out by the narrowest of margins, leaving them 17 runs short of the Luddington score.
So it was a first win for Luddington but credit must go to both teams for producing such a good game in what were rather trying conditions. Next up for Luddington is another home game, this time against early pace-setters Barton Academy Vikings, while Upton entertain Bottesford in what is their first home game of the campaign. Both will go into their respective games in confident mood.

WHAT A CRACKER!

There was a great game of cricket at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, today with Messingham chasing down 225 to win against Appleby-Frodingham in the final over of their North Lindsey League encounter.
It was a credit to both clubs and the league, with many promising youngsters to the fore on both sides.

OUTCASTS BREAK DUCK

By Glen Sands

Outcasts finally produced the type of cricket they are well capable of playing when they comprehensively defeated Louth 2nds last Saturday to gain their first win of the 2010 season.
Skipper Mark Coulman gave a stirring team talk before the match, following a string of below par performances, and it proved to be a good choice of words as his team mates rallied round to put promoted Louth to the sword. Mark and his son Oliver opened the innings and made a confident start, both of them batting well against the Louth bowling attack and the score had reached 37 when Coulman junior was caught by wicket keeper Searle off the bowling of Dale Chambers for 19. Simon Lewis joined his captain in the middle and with a steely determination the two of them put together an excellent partnership of 65 with Coulman contributing a terrific 54 before he edged a delivery from slow bowler Mark Roberts to Searle with the total on 102. Lewis had made 28 when he was third out , clipping a simple catch to Chambers at mid wicket off Lee Freeman and David Hobson became Searle's third victim when he edged Roberts behind to make it 128 for 4. Andy Torr made 19 then became another Roberts victim , trapped LBW and Peter Tait had reached only a single when he was bowled by Chambers leaving the score on 152 for6. Craig McAnaney and Matthew Teal batted well , taking the score to 168 before Teal was caught by the impressive Searle off Roberts for eight and that man Searle added a fifth victim when stumping McAnaney off the wiley Roberts for 16. Outcasts eventually made 180 for 9 in their 45 overs which represented a huge improvement on their previous batting display , visiting Mark Roberts finishing with 5 for 50 from 15 overs.
Despite leaking 14 from his first two overs, Jason Whiteley quickly tightened things up whilst debutant 17 year old Matthew Teal produced a magnificent spell in his first outing for the first eleven as Louth were made to toil for any runs at all. The youngster from Garthorpe was bowling wicket to wicket, offering little width and he was rewarded when he trapped Lee Freeman LBW for six with the total on 18 then Whiteley made it 18 for 2 when the other opener Scott inexplicably shouldered arms to a delivery that smashed into the offstump bowling him for eight. Zane Siddiqui was next to go, another to be trapped infront of his stumps by Teal, and when David Hobson took a sharpe catch at backward square to send Clark packing Outcasts had their opponents floundering on 23 for 4 with Teal having captured three of them. Whiteley then got the fifth wicket , trapping John Medler LBW for just two and the visitors were in serious trouble having lost half of their men with less than 25 on the board. From then on wickets fell at regular intervals as the McAnaney brothers entered the fray , Craig picking up two for 15 and Liam one for 13 as Outcasts ground their way through the lower middle order to wrap up a marvellous win but it was fitting that young master Teal returned to take a fourth wicket and it was all over when Simon Lewis bowled the Louth number eleven to ensure a full 20 points for the Priorymen , Mark Roberts hitting 20 and Dale Chambersa 26 not out for the visitors.
Teal ended the innings with an impressive 4 for 20 from 10 overs, a great reward for some straight and accurate bowling, whilst, as a whole, the Outcasts display was as different as chalk from cheese to their previous outing. Everyone knuckled down and showed a great resolve when batting and fielding which shoulsd encourage them when they take on Premier Division Appleby-Frodingham 2nds in the George Marshall Trophy this weekend.
