TRIBUTE TO A LINCS CRICKET LEGEND

Brian Evans, from Grimsby, one of the truly great characters of Lincolnshire cricket, and one of our top Minor Counties players in his day, has died, aged 74.
He played extensive first class cricket for Glamorgan before coming over to Grimsby in the mid-1960s and joining Ross Group – a major force in the Lincolnshire League.
He also appeared many times as an all-rounder for Lincolnshire in the Minor Counties competition.
Brian tended the ground at what was later known as Ross Sports in Grimsby, near Peaks Lane, for many years.
After retiring from playing he took up umpiring on the Grimsby panel, which he did for many years.
Born in Glamorgan in November 1936, he made his first class debut in 1958, going on to play 88 first class matches.
As a seam bowler he took 251 first class wickets (average 27, best 8-42) and scored more than 1,500 runs at an average just below 14, with a top score of 62 not out.
Those are the bare statistics. But facts and figures never really mattered to Brian – they were for the statisticians and committee people to pore over.
What he loved about the game of cricket was meeting people for a chat, a few beers and a laugh.
I first encountered him in the late 1960s, or very early 1970s, while watching Lincolnshire two-day games at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe.
He was the only player circuiting the boundary who would stop for a friendly word with the young spectators, which we really appreciated.
After his playing days were over he travelled widely to support the Lincolnshire team in the Minor Counties East competition.
Members of the press corps, committee members and players all enjoyed his company.
There was a particularly memorable trip to the Colman’s mustard ground, Lakenham, Norwich, with its superb thatched pavilion, when play was suspended due to rain and Brian, and non-playing members of the Lincolnshire contingent, filled in some hours by touring the various marquees to take in a little liquid refreshment.
He then became involved in a famous late night snooker match – back at the hotel – Press v Committee, which ended with yours truly missing...the white ball!
He was a generous man. After getting to know him well, when I put in a Lincs League appearance in the Grimsby area it was often the case that a large parcel of fish would be specially summoned from a nearby freezer “for Nig”.
He’d never take a penny for it, but might accept a beer next time our paths crossed.
Brian was great company with his fund of cricket stories. But he never patronised those he umpired at club level.
For a man who had played so much first class cricket, it must have been difficult, at times, to umpire games (like ours) in the lower reaches of the local leagues, involving players of little proven ability.
So it was that he came to officiate a Lincs League game at Nettleton Mines (when Nettleton still had a team) on a very damp day at Holton-le-Moor. Brigg's opening bowler, the long-serving 'Gig' Smith, had real problems with overstepping the front line (and not just in this match!).
Brian had carefully marked out the crease in a pile of sand brought out for drying purposes. 'Gig' sent down the next delivery and Brian called "no-ball" - resulting in the bowler kicking the sand everywhere.
Grade One dissent? Penalty runs? No, a wry smile just appeared on Brian's face, he looked the bowler square in the eye, and merely said: "Bloody hell, 'Gig' it's not Cleethorpes beach, boy!"
Laughter all round, no acrimony and the game continued to a successful conclusion, with the help and commonsense of both umpires.
About 10 years ago I turned out for Brigg Town in a Sunday Lincs League (div two/three?) game against Grimsby Town 3rds at Augusta Street.
We were not making a very good job of chasing a huge Town total, when “yours truly” (batting eight or nine) decided to chance his arm and somehow scored a quick 30.
“You could get 50 here, Nig – no problem,” said Brian at the end of an over.
Talk about putting the mockers on my innings! At the start of the next I tried to sneak a quick single and was run out by a direct hit from cover. A beaming smile lit Brian’s face and I can still hear his voice chuckling as he watched me troop off.
Sometimes he and I would be on neighbouring grounds – Littlefields and Augusta Street – and meet up for a beer, sitting in the sun outside the former’s lovely clubhouse, with Mrs F assigned to watch the kids!
Appleby-Frodingham Cricket club offers sincere condolences to Brian’s family, says long-serving secretary Ian Armiger, after reading the funeral notice in the Telegraph with much regret.
Ian adds: “Without doubt Brian was one of the finest bowlers ever to play in the Lincolnshire League and a true gentlemen, both on and off the field of play. With the passing away of Norman McVicar two years ago, and now Brian Evans, a wonderful chapter in the history of our league has ended.”
Well said, Ian.
For those wishing to pay their last respects, the funeral service will be held at the R C Church, Chemsford Avenue, Grimsby, at 9.30 on Friday, 6th May. No flowers by request - donations to the St Andrew Children Hospice, Peaks Lane Grimsby.

'SPUD' CHIPS IN WITH HANDY HALF-CENTURY

By Glen Sands

Outcasts made their bow in the Snaith & District Evening Cricket League last Thursday fielding a young side in their Third Division clash against Drax Village 2nds who themselves use the Thursday league to bring on their youngsters.
Outcasts were invited to bat first and didnt make the best of starts when losing early wickets but opener Luke Mason batted well and skipper Peter "Spud" Tait played an exceptional innings at number five as the Isle side posted a total of 116 for 7, Tait making 53 and Mason 26.
A mid-innings team talk from coach Preston Wallhead (pictured) encouraging his young team to keep their fielding standards high proved invaluable and to a man they took him at his word with a flawless display in what was becoming increasingly gloomy conditions. Alex Fletcher bowled an excellent spell whilst Jarros Teanby picked up three wickets , well supported by Niall Chester who took a couple himself , then Peter Tait brought himself on at the death to bring some experience to proceedings and with the ever-chirpy Charlie Mason encouraging the rest in the field Outcasts were able to restrict Drax to 106 for 5 , earning themselves an 11 runs victory on their league debut.
So the decision to offer the youngsters of the club a taste of senior cricket appears to have proven a good one if this first outing is a marker and they will look forward to their second match at home to Thorne Colliery on May 5th with great heart.

LUDDINGTON'S OPENER
Ludd began their 2011 Snaith campaign with the toughest of tests as they travelled to take on the 2010 Champions Fishlake and it turned out to be a thrilling affair.
Luddington were invited to bat first by the home skipper and quickly lost Oliver Coulman, caught by Ryan Pearson off Tom Webster without scoring but fellow opener Jamie Belton and Graham Clark then batted particularly well , taking the score to 48 before Belton was trapped LBW by Ken Round for 29. Andy Lawson hit a quickfire couple of boundaries before he was bowled by Round which brought Russell Fletcher to the middle and along with the in form Clark they proceeded to take the Luddington total past three figures. Clark brought up a well crafted half century before being stumped by Andy Teasdale off Mark Davies and the innings closed o n 114 for 4 from the allocated 20 overs as the sun began to set and the spring chill took hold.
Fishlake's reply began cautiously in the face of some excellent early overs from Anthony Fitzgerald and Scott Buttrick and it was Fitzgerald who picked up the first wicket , that being the prized scalp of Stuart Coulman who on his last knock against Luddington some years earlier had smashed an incredible 167 not out ! This time he played on to the slow Luddington opener for just 8 runs and when he then bowled the other Fishlake opener Max Hudson for four the home side were struggling at 16 for 2. David Johnson and 14 year old Ryan Pearson then steadied the ship but runs continued to come slowly as Tom Sharpe and Liam McAnaney kept things tight , then Sharpe caught and bowled Pearson for six and at 56 for 3 the champions required some impetous if they were to overhaul the Luddington target. That duly arrived when Mark Davies joined Johnson at the crease and as the light grew ever dimmer they began to press hard on the accelorator. Both batsmen were given a life , Johnson when almost being stumped whilst Davies was dropped off a skier and those misses proved costly for Luddington as Johnson in particular began to show his full range of shots. He brought up his half century and although Davies was superbly caught by Fitzgerald off Graham Clark for 22 in the penultimate over Johnson remained as solid as a rock to guide Fishlake to 118 for 4 with just two deliveries of the match remaining as the game ended in near darkness.
So it was a tough start for Luddfington to their evening league campaign which ultimately ended in defeat but it was a splendid game of cricket against the Champions who showed why they must be considered as title favourites again this year. Next up for Luddington is a home match against Askern Welfare on Thursday May 5th.
The Snaith Evening Cricket League got underway last Thursday in somewhat chilly and at the end of most games quite gloomy conditions but it produced lots of excellent cricket across all three divisions.

DIVISION ONE HIGHLIGHTS
Askern beat Sykehouse by just two wickets, reducing their opponents to 79 for 9 but they were made to work hard for their 81 for 8 response , Aaron Gillies top scoring with an invaluable 21 for Welfare and finally in Division One newly promoted Hensall were beaten by Goole Town by five wickets , Hensall posting a total of 123 for 8 only for Goole to reach 124 for 5 in reply in an entertaining game.

DIVISION TWO HIGHLIGHTS
Relegated Burn made a winning start to life back in Division Two when they beat Goole Firemen by five wickets , the Firemen making 73 before Burn eased to 74 for 5 and there was a splendid win for Hirst Courtney against promoted Pollington with Hirst scoring 123 for 5 when setting a target , N Goddard hitting 50 and Craig Lawson 30 before Pollington were bowled out for 107 despite a battling 48 from Ian Mileham and 30 from Hopkinson , Lawson picking up 3 for 30 for Hirst whilst Howard took an even more impressive 5 for 25. The game between Carlton Towers and Airmyn was abandoned due to bad light with Carlton on 86 for 4 chasing Airmyn's 111 for 8. Clark had scored 29 and Sparks 21 with Mark Holmes taking 3 for 13 and 13 year old Jack Dawson 3 for 27.Holmes had reached 49 not out in reply when the match was brought to a premature end , leaving the teams to share the spoils.

DIVISION THREE HIGHLIGHTS
Eggborough beat Thorne Colliery, posting a total of 139 for 6 thanks to 40 from D Pearson and 36 from Howard before Thorne were bowled out for 74 in reply.

MEGGIES' DOUBLE

By Graham Hackney

Another Bank Holiday brings another busy weekend of games for Cleethorpes Cricket Club. After their opening Yorkshire league win over Appleby Frodingham, Skipper James Osmond’s sides face home matches against Castleford and Yorkshire Academy. They make one change with first choice keeper James Windeatt once again available. With Sri Lankan professional Omesh Wijisiriwardana still awaiting a visa the Cleethorpes bowling attack that did so well in the wins over Appleby Frodingham and Belvoir get another opportunity. Jack Harrison has certainly hit the ground running with seven wickets over the two games. His five wicket haul at Belvoir was his first in senior cricket while veteran Andy Ellis caused all kinds of problems to the Steelmen on Saturday with another five wickets.
Paul Sunley’s 2nd X1 face away trips to Caistor and Alford over the Bank holiday. After last weekend’s encouraging win at Bracebridge Heath that saw Eddie Carlton plunder 85 in just 67 balls and Indy Hayre pick up four wickets, Cleethorpes can go into these games in great confidence.
Jeff Todd led Cleethorpes 3rd X1 to an opening day win at Keelby last Saturday and again leads the side for the return fixture with Keelby before travelling to Market Rasen on Monday. Spinner Lewis Markham picked up were he had left off last season with a five wicket haul while Ben Marris backed up a good display with the keeper’s gloves to hit a valuable 39 with the bat.
Cleethorpes 4th X1 face South Kelsey 2nds away on Saturday. A promising 7-wicket win over Cherry Willingham 2nds got the side off a good start in Division three with Bob Leafe hitting an unbeaten half century after Andy Severn’s fine display with the ball.
Nathan Judah leads the North Lindsey X1 as they travel to Barton in their first match of their defence of the North Lindsey crown.

TOP GAMES IN PROSPECT

By Ann Boulton

Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League champions Bourne travel up the A15 on Saturday (April 30) seeking win against 2010 runners-up Sleaford this weekend after both sides went down heavily in the first week of the season.
But Sleaford have been here before, losing heavily in their first fixture last year and will undoubtedly bounce back to give their visitors a keen contest.
On of the most hard-fought matches is likely to be at Cross O’Cliff Court where Bracebridge Heath take on Skegness after each suffered a wash out in their first game and had to settle for a share of the points.
Bracebridge’s record breaking batsmen Vikram Atri and Karanjit Bansal are sure to find the Skegness attack more of a handful while the seasiders’ line-up, which looks strong on paper, will be keen to test out the home side’s new crop of bowlers.
Lindum, who got off to fine start last week, will be looking for another 20-pointer at home to Nettleham while Woodhall Spa, who share top spot with Lindum, travel to Louth full of confidence after their demolition job on Sleaford.
On a batsman-friendly Grimsby track, spinner George Linde nevertheless looked a very good prospect and could find Hartsholme more to his liking – though the home side’s opening bat Warren Nel may have other ideas as he looks to build on last weekend’s good innings.
And Boston’s new opening partnership, Jonny Cheer and Matt Ward, will aim to take advantage of Market Deeping’s short boundary when they travel to Outgang Road to try and build on their good start.
All the league’s teams will be in action again on Monday for the first round of the Winkworth Cup – three 20/20 games played at four grounds. Boston host Market Deeping and Nettleham; Lindum is the venue for Hartsholme and Bourne; Grimsby and Woodhall Spa are in the group at Louth; and Bracebridge Heath, Skegness and Sleaford fight it out at Sleaford. The first match is at 10.30am - the loser then stays on to play at 1.30pm and the final game is at 4.30pm.

SATURDAY FIXTURES (noon start)

Hartsholme v Grimsby

MEGGIES SEE OFF STEELMEN

Report and pictures by Graham Hackney

Bill Kirby starts the season in fine style for Cleethorpes.

Cleethorpes 1st X1 got their Yorkshire league campaign of to an excellent start in glorious conditions at Chichester Road on Saturday. With overseas professional Omesh Wijisarewardana still to arrive due to visa delays, James Osmond’s side recorded a morale boosting six-wicket victory after chasing down a modest target of 144. After winning the toss Frod Skipper Matt Morland opted to bat first but Cleethorpes struck two early blows that Frod were never able to recover from. Jack Harrison, opening the bowling with veteran Andy Ellis, removed the Scunthorpe’s side overseas player Brandon Handley with his second ball as a full delivery beat his defences to shatter his stumps. He followed this up by removing Ex-Meggies spinner Nick White courtesy of a superb one handed diving catch from keeper Gary Cowlam in the sixth over as Frod struggled to 12-2. Morland (27) and James Pickersgill (20) then rallied to add 44 for the third wicket before Ellis snapped up Morland who edged to Kirby at second slip. This would be one of three catches to Kirby as Cleethorpes would produce a fine display in the field. With Matt Fowler (5) and Pickersgill both falling with the score on 63 Frod were struggling to set any kind of total as Alex Osmond claimed Fowler who was trapped in front while Pickersgill became Kirby’s second victim at slip to the bowling of Ellis. Day (17) and Dixon (12) added 24 for the sixth wicket until Dixon feathered a catch to James Osmond off Ellis to first slip. Watson (12) became Ellis’ fourth victim before Day completed Ellis’ five wicket haul in a marathon 20-over spell after edging behind. Nathan Judah came into the attack and quickly wrapped up the innings with2/8 in 3.4 overs but not before Powell (16 not out) and Hilton (12) had added a vital 24 for the final wicket. Ellis had been the stand out bowler for Cleethorpes with 5/52 with Harrison taking some late punishment to return 2/40 in eight overs.
Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond opened up for Cleethorpes and the pair had added a comfortable 23 before Osmond (7) tamely shovelled a Hilton log hop to mid off. Yaniv Judah came out in positive mode and some dispatched four boundaries before falling in similar vain as Fowler’s short ball was only helped back to the bowler for a return catch. This left Cleethorpes 61-2 with Kirby looking in fine touch. Cleethorpes Skipper James Osmond soon took to Frod Spinner Fowler and drove his first ball to the cover boundary. However having reached 15 young left armer David Pickersgill found his edge to the keeper to leave the home side 92-3. Alex Osmond joined Kirby as the pair went into their shell with Frod applying some late pressure. Kirby went to his first half century of the season in 76 balls while the hundred came up in the 25th over. Kirby (66) eventually departed to a catch behind off Watson with the score on 129 with the winning post in sight. Osmond eventually broke out of his shell to strike three boundaries in his 23 not out (70 balls) before Charlie Tomlinson (9 not out) came in to hit the winning runs for Cleethorpes in the 44th over to hand the home side a commanding victory.

Appleby-Frodingham's Brandon Handley is bowled by Jack Harrison.

CLEETHORPES ENJOY NATIONAL SUCCESS

Report and pictures from Graham Hackney

Rory Osmond on his way to 40 not out.

Harry Clewett bowls Belvoir's Ryan Lewis.

Cleethorpes cricket club's 1st X1 travelled to the picturesque Belvoir Castle estate to take on Belvoir in the first round of the National Knockout Cup on Sunday and away with a resounding eight-wicket win. It was their first win in the competition for some three years and they will face either Ilkeston Rutland or Whitley Hall at home in the next round in May. In a comprehensive bowling display, Cleethorpes bowled superbly to dismiss Belvoir for just 65 in 29.3 overs. Jack Harrison was the star turn for Cleethorpes with his first five-wicket haul in senior cricket as he demolished the top order. He had opened the bowling with James Osmond as Belvoir’s openers made a quiet start. Having reached 11 in the fifth over though, Harrison dealt the first two blows with Copley taken sharply at second slip by Bill Kirby before Neville was bowled via the inside edge for a duck. He also collected wickets in his following two overs , one courtesy of a brilliant diving catch from Ryan Harrison, to leave Belvoir floundering on 23-4. With bowlers restricted to nine overs in this 45-over contest Alex Osmond joined the attack and in his four over spell soon had Belvoir in further trouble as catches from Kirby and Harry Clewett added to their misery. When Nathan Judah accounted for Keywood to a regulation catch behind they had slipped to 41-7. Clewett was also to have immediate success as the lower order struggled against the Cleethorpes spin attack. Two quick wickets took Belvoir to 52-9 before a last wicket stand of 13 took them past 60. Only Beckett (11 not out) at number 10 had reached double figures with extras top-scoring with 19. Harrison returned to wrap up the innings as Cowlam took a diving catch behind. His figures of 5/31 in 8.3 overs were reward for his best performance in a Cleethorpes shirt. Alex Osmond finished with 2/9 in four while Clewett chipped in with 2/2 in five tight overs. Judah’s 1/12 in six overs completed a fine all-round bowling performance.
With the umpires opting to play through instead of taking an early tea, Ryan Harrison opened the innings with Rory Osmond as Skipper James Osmond chose to shuffle his batting order. The pair had added 17 before Harrison fended off a short ball to silly mid on having made six. Harry Clewett (5) came in at three but departed to on airy shot to cover but Rory Osmond was quietly building an assured innings. A couple of fine cover drives and pulls soon had the scoreboard ticking over as he and Gary Cowlam (3 not out) took Cleethorpes to their target in the 21st over. Osmond finished untroubled on 40 not out to give Cleethorpes a fine win.
They face Castleford at home this Saturday in the Yorkshire league with Yorkshire Academy the visitors on Bank Holiday Monday.

Cleethorpes' Jack Harrison.

UMPIRE OF THE YEAR

Paul Goodhand, left, receiving his trophy as the North Lindsey League's umpire of the year 2010 from Mick Knapton, chairman of the Scunthorpe and District Cricket Umpires' Association. The presentation was made at the association's pre-season meeting at Brumby Hall Cricket Pavilion, Scunthorpe. Paul, who played for Alkborough and Barton, has now been promoted to officiate in the Lincs ECB Premier League for 2011. He is better known to many as Slogger, rather than Paul. The trophy was decided by marks awarded by North Lindsey teams last summer.

SALAD DAYS

Danny Dewfall reportedly broke a thumb taking a catch for Broughton 2nds on Saturday in Lincs League division four against Morton. We hope it doesn't prove to be such a serious injury for the bowler known to many as Salad, and that he's soon back in action with his new club.

RASEN FIRSTS OFF AND RUNNING

Wickets, sunshine and 20 Points
By Andrew Richley

The Brains Trust at tea: Adam Holvey,Gary Bierlein and Simon Bunn.

Market Rasen Town Cricket Club 1st XI’s Lincs League 2 campaign got off to the best possible start as Nettleham 2nds were brushed aside on an unseasonably warm afternoon at Rase Park. Relegated into Division Two in 2010, Nettleham got off to false start last week; losing to Haxey and their talented, but young, line-up were unable to make much of an impression on a clinical Rasen performance.
The balmy weather brought out a bumper crowd and the home supporters were treated to a dominating performance by the men in green. Close-season signing, Graeme Bell, took the new ball from the River Rase end and started the season with an anguished, but unsuccessful, LBW appeal against Dave Lea. This was the precursor to a hostile and accurate spell from Bell that would see him take 1 for 8 from seven overs. Will Bradford took the new cherry from the Gallamore Lane end and having loosened up with a leg stump half volley, that Mark Thornton clipped for one, Lea found his stumps splayed by a Jaffa and Rasen were up and running.
Bradford’s second over saw the stumps spread again, this time Thornton perishing, playing on as he tried to cut a ball that was too straight for the shot. With Nettleham 4 for 2, shaggy-haired youngster Joe Naughton set about repairing the damage. Unafraid to play his shots, Naughton needed some luck to get going, but he was rewarded for his confidence with a string of boundaries and Bradford came in for some punishment. Naughton was particularly strong on his legs; his strong wrists flicking anything even remotely short into the on-side. It wasn’t until he was joined by Alex Willerton that he was joined by a batsman able to master the conditions and Rasen’s new-ball attack. Willerton showed some glimpses of class, particularly with his straight driving, but with the young pair keen to cash in on anything loose it was not surprising when Karl Bierlein – on for his first bowl of the summer – castled the left-handed Willerton on the stroke of drinks for 14. The fourth wicket pair had added 30 in 8 overs, but Bierlein’s breakthrough left Nettleham a perilous 47 for 4 after 15 overs.
With their tails up from the wicket before the drinks break an invigorated Karl Bierlein quickly picked up two more scalps in the overs following the break. Naughton was the first to go, caught and bowled for an aggressive 27. Nettleham Skipper, Martin Strawson, also prodded back to Bierlein in his next over and then Danny Lea fell to a slick catch by Ian Williams at first slip off the bowling of Gary Bierlein Rasen had reduced their opponents to 53 for 8 and a swift denouement seemed certain. However, Rasen had figured without the red-cloth cap, and broad bat, of Chris Dobbs who set about righting the innings with a mixture of idiosyncratic clips to leg and some cover drives which were far more pleasing to the eye.
The ninth wicket pair had put on 29 before Will Bradford was brought back into the attack and his impact was instant, prompting Dobbs’ partner to pop a catch up to Luke Richards at point. There was still time for Jack Neil to clear his front leg and cleanly smite a delivery from Karl Bierlein into the River Rase; however, this was simply the tail raging against the dying of the light. Bradford dismissed Dobbs for a determined 21 in the 32nd over to end the innings with Nettleham on 90. Bradford had led the way for the home side with 4 for 29 from 8.1 overs, backed up by Karl Bierlein (3 for 31 from 9 overs), Gary Bierlein (2 for 19 from 8 overs) and Graeme Bell.
Rasen’s reply began rapidly, with Graeme Bell and Jon Stephenson putting on 24 before they saw the need to take a single, in the fourth over. Bell was particularly keen to crack on, unfurling a number of crunching drives through the off-side, whilst Stephenson (27 not out) was more than happy to wait for the short ball and punish it. After six overs, Rasen had 48 on the board already and, the odd Jaffa excepted, the Nettleham was looking understandably ragged.
Determined not to go down without a fight, Strawson got his reward in the seventh over, as Bell played on, looking to smear the ball over deep mid-wicket. The all-rounder’s brisk cameo of 27 contained 6 fours, as well as a ‘2’ and a solitary single. George Fussey, making his 1st XI debut, carried on in the same vein, pulling and cutting two fours in his first couple of overs. Unfortunately the Lincs U16 batsman’s afternoon was cut short as Stephenson called for a sharp single that was, by the time both players had ‘ummed’ and ‘aahed’, simply not there. The brief flurry of wickets left Rasen 64 for 2 and lifted Nettleham’s spirits; however these were crushed mercilessly by Ian Williams, whose brutal cameo of 22 not out sealed the deal for the home side. Williams put the icing on the cake with a straight six that scattered the veterans watching at the long-off boundary.
One match does not make a summer and Nettleham’s team was talented, but rather young for this level, but if Rasen can turn in consistent performances in the same vein this summer then they must surely have a good chance of being in the frame for promotion.
Will Bradford.

HYKEHAM BEAT THE RAIN AND OUTCASTS

By Glen Sands
Lincs League Division One - Hykeham v Outcasts

Outcasts began their 2011 season with a comprehensive defeat at Hykeham on Easter Saturday on a hot and sultry afternoon which ended with a hefty thunder shower which arrived just too late to save them.
They had the misfortune to lose the toss and had to bowl in the heat of the sunshine , but things got off to a decent start when Tom Sharpe had home skipper Mark Conyers caught at slip by Darren Clark for seven with the total on 21. Lee Maddocks and Josh Taylor then took the Hykeham score to 96 , both of them punishing any deliveries that were slightly off line then acting captain Russell Fletcher caught Taylor off Jason Whiteley for 41 and with just a further four runs added Charlie Mason caught Maddocks , again for 41 to earn Matthew Teal his first wicket of the innings. Nick Boulton was bowled by Whiteley for 21 with the total on 132 and another wicket at that stage might well have proved vital for the Isle side but it was not to be as they wilted in the heat of the day. New recruit Sam Inman and Chris Hammond took the fight to Outcasts , putting on 86 runs in quick time to essentially bat the visitors out of the game. Hammond was just one short of his half century when he was well caught at deep mid off by Darren Clark off Tom Sharpe and .despite Matthew Teal picking up two late wickets Hykeham eased to 257 for 7 thanks to Inman's 63 not out and a late 13 from Kieran O'Sullivan , Teal finishing with 3 for 41 for the Priorymen.
Outcasts' reply saw them quickly slip to 20 for 3 as Oliver Coulman was trapped LBW by Chris Hammond for siw then David Hobson and Graham Clark both went to the bowling of Rick Chester. The weather was beginning to change as thunder boomed out from the skies but Outcasts continued to lose wickets with alarming regularity as the home side strode to victory. Darren Clark had made 22 when he was bowled by Chester with a delivery that in truth kept a little low then skipper Fletcher was caught by Mark Conyers at slip for nine giving Chester his fourth wicket of the innings. Scott Buttrick was next to go , caught by Clark off Hammond for four and new slow bowler Nick Boulton then joined the party as he picked up two late wickets himself. By that time the rain had began but the umpires to their credit kept the players out in the field as Hykeham were so close to finishing the game and sure enough Chester picked up his fifth wicket when Liam McAnaney was well caught leaving Outcasts on a paultry 88 all out.
So the new campaign has seen Outcasts 1st team make a poor start, but it was different for the 2nd eleven who posted a score of over 200 at home to Immingham Blossom Way (in division three) thanks chiefly to Richard Wroot who hit 66 with further contributions from Andy Lawson and Tom Whitton and despite a late rear guard action from stalwart Ron Farmery Blossom Way ended their 45 overs on 147 for 9 , which means Ian Fletcher's men made a terrific start following last season's disappointments.
Outcasts CC would like to thank the River Don at Eastoft for sponsoring the match ball for their game against Immimgham Blossom Way - a gesture they appreciate greatly.

(kindly supplied by Ann Boulton)

Grantham, Sleaford 2nd and Belton Park all picked up maximum points in the first full weekend of Division One in the South Lincolnshire & Border League.
Daniel Gascoyne did the damage for Grantham, taking five wickets to help bowl out Boston 2nd for 107, a total Grantham overtook with only two down.
James Rickett also took five for Sleaford 2nd against Woodhall Spa 2nd who were all out for 143 despite Charles Wright’s 51. Sleaford went on to win by five wickets.
And in Belton Park’s game there were three half-centuries, Alex Wheatley making 50 in Market Deeping 2nd’s total of 126 while Dave Richardson and Richard Cocks hit half-centuries as Belton won by nine wickets.
Elsewhere, Stamford continued their good start to their campaign in the top flight with an 18 point victory over Bourne 2nd for whom Robert Bentley made the only century of the day with 100 not out. In Division Two, last season’s challengers Welby went down for the second week running, being bowled out for 88 after Thomas Cook had made 171 for five in their innings, Vinit Shah with 66.

CLUBS ASKED TO BE PATIENT

Reference was made to development work under way at/near two well-known cricket grounds during last night's pre-season meeting of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League at Market Rasen CC.
Acting General Secretary Glen Sands read out a letter received from Caistor Town CC's Mark Gowshall, informing all member clubs of possible minor disruption they might encounter at the beginning of the season, due to building work at the club, where extension are being added.
Appleby-Frodingham secretary Ian Armiger then advised the meeting that on-going building work at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, on the Pods leisure complex would mean limited car parking throughout the season and would make access to and from the ground (via Ashby Road) a little trickier than usual. However, once the project was completed, there would be much more space available than before.
Results Secretary Nigel Fisher suggested to clubs that they might begin considering the possibility of producing a joint handbook in the future with the Lincs ECB and South Lincs & Border Leagues which might help reduce costs and also mean umpires would not need to carry so many about when officiating at matches. He said much of the information was repeated year after year and might usefully be placed on the league websites.
Following on from a point made by Howard Swain (Cleethorpes) during a speech to last month's league dinner, the Results Secretary stressed that 2013 would see the 50th anniversary of the Lincolnshire League (first season 1963). He invited clubs to ponder on ways that major milestone could be celebrated.
The question of a joint handbook and the 50th anniversary celebrations will be placed on the agenda for discussion at the Lincs League's July meeting, by which times member clubs will have had the chance to formulate their views.

HELP TRACK DOWN MISSING CUP

The Lincolnshire League division two wicketkeeping trophy has gone astray. It should be in the proud possession of the Market Rasen stumper, but it isn't. It could be someone took home the wrong trophycup by mistake from the annual dinner and presentation night last month. If you can help track in down, please email scoopfisher@aol.com or contact any other Lincs League or Grimsby League official.

PETER STANDS IN AT AGGERS 'DO'

There was some disappointment for Caistor Cricket Club when illness prevented BBC Cricket Correspondent and Test Match Special favourite, Jonathan Agnew, attending the Sportsmen's Dinner held at Forest Pines, Broughton. Compensation came, however, came in the form of former Test Match Special Producer Peter Baxter, who stepped in at the last minute to replace him. Peter is pictured, centre right, toasting the health of the club for the forthcoming season with dinner organiser Reg Percival (left) and 1st team captain Peter Briggs (2nd left). Sponsor James Wright is also pictured.

UMPIRES NEEDED ACROSS LINCOLNSHIRE

Local cricket, wherever you live in Lincolnshire, always needs more umpires. This graphic, kindly forwarded to us by Robyn Wilkinson, who is secretary of the Association of Lincolnshire Cricket Officials, lists helpful contacts across the county. Training courses are run at various locations during the close season. So if you are a player who is thinking 2011 might be your last, a spectator or cricket-lover interested in officiating, or someone whose coaching and school duties mean umpiring junior matches, you would benefit from putting your name down as soon as possible. Many thanks to Snelly - our man at Marshalls - for kindly supplying this picture which shows the impressive new facility which is now a feature of the Gainsborough ground and which many players (and umpires) will look forward to visiting this season.

BORDER BOYS UNDER WAY

From Ann Boulton

Newly promoted Stamford got their Division One campaign in the South Lincs and Border League off to a flying start when they picked up 20 points with a 10 wicket win over Spalding, with Chris Bore hitting an unbeaten 82.
Market Deeping also set off well, winning a tighter game against Boston 2nd who failed by 13 runs to reach their opponents’ total of 215 of which Richard Witt hit 69. Luke Gilding made 73 for Boston but the final wicket fell on 202.

Sleaford Sunday carried on where they left off in 2010 with a three wicket win over Welby in Division Two and in Division Three, Baston made the highest total of the day of 235 for four, Chris Bower failing by just two runs to hit the first century of the season. Spalding 3rd were then bowled out for 120.
Grantham 2nd, who found victories hard to come by last year, started off with a five wicket win over Moulton Harrox for whom Jack Barnett made an unbeaten 90 while Lewis Dann hit 67 for Grantham.

RESULTS

Division One
Spalding 131, Stamford 132-0 (Bore 82no); Market Deeping 2nd 215-9 (Witt 69), Boston 2nd 202 (L Gilding 73).

Division Two
Welby 173-9, Sleaford Sunday 174-7.

Division Three

GOOLE GET BETTER OF STEELMEN

The first team friendly between Appleby-Frodingham Cricket Club (pictured above) and Goole Town at the Scunthorpe Steelmen's Brumby Hall venue on Sunday provided players on both sides with an opportunity to ease themselves into the new campaign.
Goole, skippered by Kevin Murphy, triumphed by four wickets against Matt Morland's team, chasing down 180 quite comfortably.
Neil Foster was in good all-round form for Goole, while spinner Matt Fowler bowled well for the home team.
But the match will be remembered for a superb piece of fielding by visiting skipper Murphy which resulted in an important run-out. Diving, he stopped the ball, turned while still on the ground and threw down the stumps with a direct hit from distance.
The very dry April weather and warm, sunny conditions made it seem more like June than the first competitive outing of the season for these two sides and the umpires - "yours truly" and Steve Bailey.
I was delighted to scoop £20 on the football name card fundraiser organised by Appleby-Frodingham at tea, but Goole might have been forgiven or thinking something amiss was going on when Frod spectator Vince Grimes nipped onto the field during a break in play and started handing cash to one of the umpires.
App-Frod: Morland, R. Powell, Fowler, Forrester, B Bramley, J Pickersgill, K Watson, J Dixon, Day, D Pickersgill.
Goole: Murphy, Lewis, Hicks, Sugden, Nottingham, Kerr, Mahoney, Lamb, Byron, Foster, Mann.
For the benefit of any Goole players/officials who have been directed here from the Goole People website, Lincs Cricket Latest carries regular scores, news, fixtures and tables from the Snaith District Evening League. So please keep watching as the season unfolds!
The App-Frod v Goole curtain-raiser seems to have become established now and we hope the weather again stays fine if there's a repeat fixture in April 2012.

LINCS ECB PREMIER STARTS ON SATURDAY

CARL TAYLOR MOVES FROM APP-FROD TO GRIMSBY - WADE McCALL RETURNS TO SKEG - KARANJIT BANSAL NOW AT BRACEBRIDGE

Preview by Ann Boulton

Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League champions Bourne get their season under way with a home game on Saturday against Lindum, who finished two places behind them in 2010.
Last season’s top wicket-taker Fahad Masood returns to Abbey Lawn for a second attempt at the league record as Pete Morgan’s side look for their second successive championship.
Lindum, captained this year by Dale Christie, have also recruited a bowler, 22-year-old Australian Matthew Bursa who was the leading wicket taker in the recent Sydney Second Grade competition.
But it is to Woodhall Spa that all eyes will turn as, following his devastating seven match spell at Jubilee Park last year, Pakistani international Fawad Alam is set to return as Woodhall’s overseas player for 2011. Difficulties with Alam’s visa saw him and the club investigated by the UK Borders Agency in 2010 but no action was taken and the agency has cleared the fast bowling all-rounder to return for this season. Alam may not make it here for Woodhall’s first match at home to Sleaford but is expected to arrive later in the month.
Off-spinning all rounder Dan Milgate has also returned to Jubilee Park where he played for Woodhall Spa in 2008. Australian Milgate, who took 43 wickets for Boston last season, is now a permanent resident in England, which allowed Woodhall to go after Alam as their overseas player. And to strengthen to batting top order, Andrew Crook has transferred back to the Jubilee Park club from Bracebridge Heath.
Grimsby Town have also added to their squad, signing quickie Carl Taylor from Appleby-Frodingham and batsman Jim Morgan from Louth as well as bringing over South African spinner George Linde, who is also a talented batsman and is expected to fill the gap at number four while the ever-improving Neal Snell bats at three.
Market Deeping are the visitors to Augusta Street on Saturday and are expected to show few changes to their team, although bowler Michael Kearns has moved on to play for Spalding.
Louth visit Boston whose overseas player is 22 year old wicketkeeper/batsman Matt Ward from Australia, while Louth welcome back one of the league’s best know overseas players – Sri Lankan all-rounder Nuwan Shiroman.
Shiroman played in Essex in 2010 but prior to that had five years in the Lincolnshire Premier League with Louth and Lindum. He will be joined in the Louth line-up by former Cleethorpes and Barnsley quickie Andy Carrington and slow bowler Michael Brown who has moved from Grimsby.
Going from Louth to Bracebridge Heath is bowler Jonathan Darke and he will be joined in the line-up by former Lindum player Karanjit Bansal and Lincolnshire batsman Vikram Atri who makes a welcome return to Cross O’Cliff Court. County skipper Paul Cook is this year also captaining his club who will be chasing the championship that eluded them last season.

Nettleham is the venue for Bracebridge’s first game and the home side will hope to introduce top order batsman Daniel Wright (24) from Australia to replace Warren Nel who has moved to Hartsholme. Wright averaged around 40 in the championship winning Lara Club’s season and is also a medium paced bowler.
Skegness are the guests at Hartsholme, with Australian Wade McCall making his return from his homeland. Returning with him is 19 year old bowler Lochlan Christian and the seasiders have also signed top order bat Norman Brackley who is from Zimbabwe but holds a British passport.

SATURDAY FIXTURES
(noon starts)
Boston v Louth
Bourne v Lindum
Grimsby v Market Deeping
Hartsholme v Skegness
Nettleham v Bracebridge Heath
Woodhall Spa v Sleaford

GREAT NIGHT OF MEMORIES

It was an honour to be asked to speak at Brocklesby Park Cricket Club's dinner last night, looking back at games in which I played for the historic club over a 12-year period.
The great work done by statistical wizard Richard Bedwell (above left) in inputting the scorecards of all these games made it easy just to print off a selection and recount some suitable memories.
These included four wickets in the same over by Michael Burbidge (all victims being stumped) against Elsham Golf Club, in a midweek friendly.
This was a fitting anecdote, as Elsham Golf Club's function suite was the venue for the annual meal.
Twenty-six of us enjoyed a great night - and they even picked me up and took me home again. The carvery meal was excellent and the well-supported raffle raised a tidy sum to help with costs.
Brock Park will again be competing in the West Wold Midweek League and the East Lindsey League at weekends.

MORE PICTURES FROM THIS EVENT WILL APPEAR IN DUE COURSE ON THE WEBSITE BRIGG PEOPLE. A FURTHER SELECTION HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO THE UPMARKET LINCOLNSHIRE JOURNAL MAGAZINE, HOPEFULLY FOR USE IN THE SOCIETY PAGES. SO KEEP WATCHING!

Keith Smith (left), Tim Hartley (right) and Peter Burbidge (centre), who appears to be finding the topic of conversation a bit of a hot potato!

Having a laugh with Nick Beacock, second right!

Nev Page may have only just have squeezed into this picture but he did feature in several of my anecdotes, including when he dismissed Cleethorpes and Lincolnshire legend Martin Maslin for 19, courtesy of a Lewis Strange catch, during a match between Brocklesby Park and Ray Mawer's X1 at the historic country venue.

BROCK PARK DINNER

Historic Brocklesby Park Cricket Club holds its annual dinner tomorrow (Wed) at Elsham Golf Club, when "yours truly" has been invited along by Lewis Strange to relate a few stories from my time spent as a player with His Lordship's line-up in years past.

MINUTES FOR APPROVAL

LINCS LEAGUE CRICKET MEETING @ MARKET RASEN, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 19TH

Attended by The League Chairman Bob Welton , Acting League Sec Glen Sands
Treasurer Brian Simpson Statistician Andy Sharp, the three umpires association reps
and all 31 member clubs.
There were apologies received from Vice Chairman Preston Wallhead and Results Sec Nigel Fisher.

THE MINUTES IF THRE JULY 2010 MEETING had been circulated prior to this meeting and were acknowledged as a true record. PROP : Grimsby Town SECONDED : Maret Rasen
There were no matters arising from the floor.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
The Chairman informed the meeting that the matters he intended to discuss in his report would crop up during the meeting anyway after which he invited the acting Sec for his report.

FIXTURE SECRETARY'S REPORT
The fixture sec reported that owing to Morton sharing their ground with Roses they were still looking to settle on an agreeable date for their Division Four fixture, whilst Caistor 3rds v Hykeham 2nds was still to be given a definate date. There was one other late problem that had cropped up involving Scunthorpe 2nds v Outcasts 2nds which he intended to address with the Scunthorpe rep asap.
Sadly the Results Sec was unable to attend which meant that he and the electronic scoring committee were not able to provide the meeting with the scheduled explanation as to the workings of the proposed system.
Several clubs expressed their disappointment as they were hoping to be presented with what they described as an "idiot's guide" to filling in the electronic score sheets. It was decided that he, along with Graham Hackney, was to be invited to organise a seperate meeting at which any clubs wishing to send a willing to learn representative could attend. Nigel Fisher to be contacted re. organising said meeting.

TREASURER
The treasurer expressed his disappointment that the promised payments from the AGM for 2011 cricket balls + league fees etc were received in only a few instances which meant that plans to pay for the cricket balls before VAT rose to 20% have had to be scrapped. All ball requirements are to be confirmed by the end of the week after which he will sort out with Reeders the full quantity required. A conversation then took place with regard to the payment to the Lincs Cricket Board for affiliation fees. Emails have been received by nearly all Lincs League member clubs requesting the fees for 2011 be made direct to them rather than via the League itself.
After a great deal of debate it was proposed by Statistician Andy Sharp that each member club pay their dues to the Lincs Cricket Board then be aided toward their payment by a reimbursment of per team (or perhaps even an extra ball). This was seconded by Market Rasen CC.

STATISTICIAN'S REPORT
The statistician handed out a list of the best Individual performances for 2010 for members to look through in preperation for a later vote.

ON LINE PRESENTATION
Due to Nigel Fisher not being at the meeting the proposed presentation was unable to take place. Several questions were raised from the floor and it was decided that Nigel, along with Graham Hackney of Cleethorpes would be invited to put together a "user guide" for the new electronic score sheet and explain it to any club's members at a specially arranged gathering. These instructions can hopefully
be included in the handbook.

UMPIRES' REPRESENTATIVES' REPORTS
Lincoln Umpires rep brought to the attention of the meeting an on going lack of communication with Scunthorpe Town who had awarded low marks to two of their members last season. The Scunthorpe rep at the meeting assured them that a letter would be sent to them within the week, something which the league Chairman reinforced quite viamently. The umpires also made a request that their expenses for 2011 in the Lincs League be increased by £2 cross the board. This was proposed by Haxey and seconded by Outcasts after much deliberation.

PRESENTATION OF LEAGUE PENNANTS
At this point the Chairman presented the League Pennents to the Champions of the five leagues:

PREMIER DIVISION : MESSINGHAM
DIVISION ONE : CHERRY WILLINGHAM
DIVISION TWO : MESSINGHAM 2NDS
DIVISION THREE : KEELBY
DIVISION FOUR : OLD LINCOLNIANS

NOMINATIONS
MOST IMPROVED UNDER 21 PLAYER
None of the nominations received were backed by last season's stats so it was agreed that Andy Sharp take away the named players to research their earlier form and make recomendations once obtained.

SCOREBOOK OF THE YEAR
There were two books nominated and the winner for 2010 was that of James Travis of Keelby.
SECRETARY OF THE YEAR
Will be decided at a later date by the committee.
PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON
After a vote made in the room the winner of the performance of the season 2010 went to C Wathakarage who hit 99 for South Kelsey and took 7 for 42 against App Frod 2nds.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS
The Chairman suggested that he would approach ex Chairman Keith Wadd with a view to him being offered the role of Lincs League President, a suggestion that the meeting acknowledged as a spledid idea.
Mick Barton confirmed that the date for the Presentation evening would be at Blundell Park Grimsby on Thursday March 17th. As yet no speaker had been found nor had the tickets been priced.

DATE OF NEXT MEETINGS
Pre-season meeting Wed April 20th
Mid-season meeting Wed July 20th
AGM Wed October 19th

LINCS LEAGUE START TIMES CLARIFIED

By Glen Sands, Acting General Secretary and Results Secretary

There appears to be some confusion as to the start times for the Lincs League games so in an attempt to clarify this can all clubs be aware that in the rules under match start times Rule 6.2 reads as follows and should be adhered to:

RULE 6.2 Match start times and duration
Premier division matches shall be of 100 overs duration - these games shall commence at 1.00pm. Matches outside the Premier Division shall be of 90 overs duration - these games shall commence at 1.30pm, except in September when Premier Division matches will start at 12.30pm and other divisions at 1.00pm.

To my knowledge there has been some leeway given to earlier starts in April provided BOTH TEAMS agree and make the umpires aware of the change so if you do get your heads together in the first few weeks please let the relevent Umpires associations know of any earlier starts.

OUTCASTS JOIN EVENING LEAGUE

Information kindly supplied to Lincs Cricket Latest by Glen Sands

Sturgethorpe CC have withdrawn from the Snaith and District Evening League while Outcasts, from Hirst Priory, near Crowle, have been admitted to Division Three.
The league AGM was held yesterday, Wed April 6th, at Carlton Towers.
Outcasts' team will consist mainly of under-15 and under-17s, with a smattering of senior players to add that bit of knowhow.
Peter "Spud" Tait has volunteered to skipper them and they will undoubtedly have some words of wisdom from the likes of Ian Fletcher (whose youngest son Alex will be playing) and David Hobson. to name but two.
Their opponents throughout the season will be Eggborough, Drax Village 2nds, Thorne Colliery and Howden Town, whilst they have been handed a home tie in the Arthur Brant Trophy against Burn CC, who were relegated from the First Division last year.
Outcasts are the second team from the Isle of Axholme to compete in the long established Snaith Evening League as Luddington have played for several years now.
Indeed they have had some success with two First Division titles and a Snaith League Shield victory of late.

The Grimsby League Ibwest Cup clash between Emplex and Waltham Millers has been put back a day to Thursday, May 5, due to ground availability issues.

CLUBS CAN SAVE TIME

Ann Boulton, who has much experience of the Play Cricket online registrations system as used by the Lincs ECB Premier League and the South Lincs and Border League, has supplied the following useful advice to Lincolnshire County Cricket League clubs currently registering their personnel for the first time...

Are clubs whose players are already registered for the ECB League just clicking on the Lincs League link on their registration? They don't need to fill in a new form as when they click the link it will come through for you for approval anyway. That way, they don't get two registration numbers and you don't have to match them up.
Also, if someone is registered for one club and transfers to another in the league, there is a transfer facility so again, the new club doesn't need to key in details again.
