LUDD TAKE THUMPING

By Glen Sands

Fishlake and Luddington went into their Snaith Evening League Division One encounter yesterday with unbeaten records, but it was the South Yorkshire team who kept up that tag with a comprehensive victory over the Isle of Axholme side.
Luddington batted first with Simon Lewis and Jamie Belton opening the innings but and they were faced with some tight bowling alied with some astute field settings and very good fielding. Sam Mason and Phil Wood bowled well with few loose deliveries to hit and that was apparant in the scoring as Luddington progressed slowly before Belton was out, caught by Tim Elliott off first change bowler Anthony Garighan for 16. That saw in form Peter "Spud" Tait stride to the crease and along with Lewis he helped move the score along more quickly, Lewis belying his senior years with some excellent running between the wickets. Boundaries began to come as well and the score had reached 95 when Tait was bowled by slow bowler Richard Copley for 39, bringing Andy Lawson to the middle for the final few deliveries. Lewis took his own score to exactly 50, while Lawson made 15 leaving Luddington on 123 for 2 from their 20 overs, all the Fishlake bowlers bowling well despite the lack of wickets having fallen.
Fishlake's reply got off to a seering start as Josh Mason and ex-West Butterwick man David Johnson struck some terrific shots. Both players batted very well, punishing anything loose from the visitors. But with the total on 51 Johnson snicked a leg side catch to wicket keeper Jamie Belton off Simon Lewis for 35 which brought Richard Copley to the crease to join the in form Mason. There was no let-up in the barrage of boundaries as Mason in particular struck some fearful blows, taking his score to 50 not out and with Copley bludgening 25 not out the home side won the game with more than five overs remaining!
So Fishlake take their 100 per cent record to four games, while Luddington will look to get back on track when visiting Goole Town next Thursday - a ground where they have traditionally had some tough encounters in the past.

ELSEWHERE IN DIVISION ONE
Askern moved into second spot when they beat promoted Burn by the same 9 wickets at Burn, who scored 104 for 7, only for Gibbon (58) and Exley (38 not out) to guide Askern home. The other top-flight game saw Drax Village win by 7 wickets at Goole Town who posted a total of 85 all out before the visitors cruised to 89 for 3.

DIVISION TWO
Sturgethorpe gained a comfortable 8 wicket win at Carlton Towers who only managed 55 in total which the visitors surpassed comfortably, and Hensall remain second having beaten Hirst Courtney in their home fixture. Goole Firemen hit 158 against Howden Town who fell 30 runs short in reply.

DIVISION THREE
Airmyn remain early leaders thanks to their 4 wicket victory at Thorne Colliery who scored 79 all out thanks to 25 from Stewart, G Clark picking up 4 for 4 for Airmyn and the same player then made 19 not out as Airmyn reached 82 for 6 in reply, Colliery's Appleby taking 2 for 8 in a low-scoring affair. The same cannot be said of the game at Pollington who scored a tremendous 206 for 6 against Drax Village 2nds, Simon Hopkinson scoring 60 and Paul Barnes 51. Then Drax dropped anchor to make their way to 95 for 4, Daz Lawson making 35 for the Villagers.
