COLD COMFORT
Haxey's new overseas player Yaddehige (Isuru) Gunasena left Sri Lanka in 40-degree heat to come over to the Isle of Axholme village. On Sunday, when he was called upon to play in the opening North Lindsey League game of the season at home to Grimsby Town it was still 40 degrees - but 40 Farenheit, with wind-chill factor!
While fielding after tea he piled on the shirts and sweaters, donned a warm beany hat and even tried hand-warmers in his pockets...all to no avail. But then at "drinks" during the second innings of the day the Haxey contingent in their fine pavilion came up with the answer. As others were sipping their squash, a steaming hot cup of tea was brought out for Isuru, who appreciated the warmth of the mug almost as much as its contents. They also saw the match umpires got hot drinks, too. Sincere thanks go to Don and Co for that kindness.
Hopefully things will get a great deal warmer for Isuru, and the rest of us, in the coming weeks. Sunday was one of the coldest day's cricket I can remember.
