Luddington opened their 2012 North Lindsey League Division Three campaign with a comfortable victory at Everton 3rds who in truth found themselves short of one or two of their regulars and in the end played with only ten men.
Luddington skipper Gareth Parkin won the toss and chose to bat first on the artificial wicket and they soon found themselves one down as Darren Clark edged a catch to wicket keeper Peter Dobson off Richard Chamber having scored just a single. Martin Fletcher joined Graham Clark at the crease but he was next to go , run out for one when attempting a risky second to an excellent throw from the boudary , leaving Ludd on 22 for 2. Debutant Joe Woolhouse was next to the middle and he made an impressive start , playing some spledid shots as the score was pushed towards the half century mark but just as he appeared set fair he was caught by Alan Cruickshank off the bowling of Ian Love having made a confident 14 which brought Andy Lawson to the crease for the Isle of Axholme side. Graham Clark , who was suffering with a heavy cold , was trapped LBW by Chambers for 23 , then came a pivotal moment in the game when Lawson was dropped , after which he took complete control of the match with some tremendous shots to all parts of the ground. Along with skipper Gareth Parkin he took the total past the three igure mark then Parkin was adjudged LBW for three which saw Jamie Arrowsmith head out to join Lawson and the two of them proceded to dominatye the Everton attack. Lawson cracked four sixes whilst Arrowsmith played two exquisit boudaries athe runs flowed before the latter was bowled by Chambers for eleven but there was to be respite as Danny Taylor entered the frey , hitting a six and a four in one over to push the Luddington score on further. Lawson reached an excellent 50 before being caught at deep mid off by Alan Cruickshank off Woods and Steve Proctor failed to trouble the scorers when he played on to give Chambers his fourth wicket of the inning Taylor had reached 18 when he hit a catch to Jake Midgeley off Ian Love but the Luddington tail wagged as Arron Curry hit a quickfire 21 and Matthew Mellers four before Curry was last man out to a second catch by Midgeley , leaving the Luddington total on 164 all out Love finishing with 4 for 52 and Chambers 4 for 25.
After the customery splendid tea provided by the Everton tea ladies, Luddington took to the field with Matthew Mellers and Jamie Arrowsmith oening the bowling. Everton openers Peter Dobson and in particular Richard Chambers started well before Dobson was run out when attempting a second run to the lightening fast Arron Curry who's laser like throw was right over the stumps , sending Dobson back to the pavilion having made six , then Chambers inexplicably holed out to Joe Woolhouse at mid wicket off the bowling of Arrowsmith having reached 19 and from then on Luddingon took complete control. Curry replaced Arrowsmith who was having difficulty with his footing but it was Mellers who struck next when bowling Jake Midgeley for four with a terrific yorker. Tom Mell offered some resistance , making 16 before he was out to a catch by Martin Fletcher off Curry then Ian Love was superbly caught by a sliding Danny Taylor min the deep , again off Curry as Everton began to wilt. Mellers bowled Woods for 0 then Fletcher took another catch to send Rory Lindley back to the hutch having made three and it was left to Danny Taylor o come on and finish the game , picking up the wickets of Alan Cruickshank for seven with a juggling return catch then skittling last man Winstanley with a yorker as Everton were bowled out for 73. Arron Curry took 3 for 28 and Matt Mellers n excellent 2 for 14 whilst Taylor's brief spell saw him end with 2 for 1 off one over.
So it was a comfortable opening victory for Luddington aginst a plucky Everton side and special mention also should go to umpires Mick Walker and Steve Dixon who officiated the game well throughout on a chilly May afternoon.
Joe Woolhouse batted well in his first senior game showing lots of promise and there were good performances from Lawson and Arrowsmith with the bat and an all-round effort from Danny Taylor as Luddington made a terrific start to the season which they will hope to continue against Broughton 4ths on Sunday. Everton, meanwhile, will look to improve on this performance when they entertain Upton cum Kexby.
