Cleethorpes hung on to second position in the Yorkshire league with a tight 32-run win over Sheffield United at Chichester Road on Saturday.
Batting first they struggled to 151-9 in their 55 overs as their batsmen struggled in the seamer friendly conditions after James Osmond had lost the toss and was asked to bat first.
They were dealt an early blows losing Charlie Tomlinson (2), Bill Kirby (2) and Alex Osmond (0) within the first seven overs to leave them 10-3 as Sheffield seamers Law and Ali maintains a tight stranglehold on the top order.
Rory Osmond and Yaniv Judah set about patiently rebuilding the innings and it wasn’t until the 18th over that Osmond hit Cleethorpes’ first boundary on a slow outfield.
After weathering the early storm the pair added 64 in 28 overs before Judah flashed hard at Ali and edged behind for 24.
Paul Sunley then came in and upped the tempo of the innings with a breezy 25 as he and Osmond took the score past 100 in the 43rd over.
Osmond completed a studious half century in 123 balls hitting four boundaries before falling for 58 as he holed out to deep midwicket as the chase for runs intensified.
Sunley fell immediately afterwards striking to long on two balls later to leave Meggies 119-6. Skipper James Osmond fell for a duck before Overseas Graham Hume (12) departed lbw to an lbw decision.
It was left to Harry Clewett with 14 to guide Cleethorpes past 150 as they scraped to their final total.
Having used the heavy roller in the interval, Sheffield found conditions far easier hwne they began their reply as Hume and Andy Ellis struggled to find the movement the Sheffield bowlers had.
Despite this the pair were able to keep a tight check on the scoring as Cleethorpes attempted to apply some pressure.
Eventually the effects of the roller began to wear off as Hume got a delivery to Sheffield Skipper Paul Cummins to bounce and Tomlinson took a sharp instinctive catch at bat-pad.
Ellis followed this up by having Mark Cummins trapped in front the next over. It took the introduction of Alex Osmond to shift the balance Cleethorpes way.
A burst of 4/7 in 7 overs ripped the heart out of the Sheffield middle order as he found turn and bounce as they collapsed to 54-6.
Sheffield’s Tetley was putting together a fine knock of 44 as he and Hossell added 50 for the seventh wicket to give their side hope.
With the game on a knife edge Harry Clewett made the important breakthrough bowling Tetley round his legs.
Osmond then trapped Law lbw to complete a five wicket haul before Hossell (22) ran himself out, slipping on the green wicket. It was left to Osmond to complete the victory taking an easy return catch from Ali as Sheffield subsided to 119 all out in the 51st over.
He finished with superb figures of 6/39 in seven overs as Cleethorpes maintained their unbeaten start in the Yorkshire league. Their first real test comes at high-flying Rotherham on Saturday.
