7-WICKET SHARPE CUTS THROUGH CAISTOR BATTING

By Glen Sands

The weather finally relented on Sunday with all bar two of the scheduled games in the North Lindsey Cricket League being played.
One of the matches not played was rearranged due to Gainsborough Trinity Football Club's involvement in the Blue Square North Play Off Final.

DIVISION ONE
Champions Grimsby Town 3rds made a winning start to the defence of their title but were made to battle hard before overcoming Broughton 3rds by 17 runs. Grimsby scored 177, overseas player Diseko contributing 64, then home-grown talent Nick Dobbs hit 70 as Broughton replied with 160. There was a low scoring encounter at Heslam Park where the ground has been particularly rain soaked and it was the hosts who came out on top when bowling near neighbours Appleby-Frodingham 3rds out for 53 then replying with 54 for 6. Paul Hilton top scored in the Frod innings with 17 as George Hanson picked up 3 for 7, then Ian Snowden made 15 as Town stuttered to their target. The 2011 runners-up, Caistor Cougars, saw off a spirited Outcasts side who won the Second Division title last year for their first win of the new campaign, Tom Boryszczuk hitting 32 and Liam Wood 42 for the Cougars in a total of 154 for 9 with Tom Sharpe taking an impressive 7 for 50 for the Priorymen who  reached 132 for 8 in reply, Scott Buttrick scoring 31, Charlie Mason 23 and Russ Fletcher 22, with that man Boryszczuk taking 4 for 38.

Andy Genney's Barton Town 4ths gained their first points of the season and it was Marc Foster who he had to thank for them setting a target of 134 as he hit 51. Then veteran bowler George Phillips took an excellent haul of 6 for 9 as visiting Hibaldstow were bowled out for 44, Jack Waller picking up 2 for 7 as well for Barton. The local derby out in Nottinghamshire  went the way of newly-promoted Misterton 2nds who skittled Haxey 3rds for just 34, Mark Boscolo bowling well in taking 5 for 2 (and those two were both wides) before cruising to 35 for 2 to gain their first points of 2012.

The other two games in Division Three did not take place.
