The invasion of huge South African flying ants which held up last night's England v Australia semi-final reminded me of a game at Foxhills sportsground, Scunthorpe, when insects attacked players out in the middle to such an extent that the umpires took us off the field for about half-an-hour.
Back in the mid-1970s one particularly hot summer resulted in a plague of what I call thunder-flies, which were an annoyance during local cricket matches but not enough of a nuisance to halt play.
Cows could hold up play briefly at East Halton while passing behind the bowler's arm on their way for milking at Townside Farm, and stray dogs have proved a nuisance on many occasions.
