BY GEORGE!

George Thompson was a great slow-medium bowler in his days with Cleethorpes and Hartsholme - and also helped out Brocklesby Park in friendlies from time to time, living not far away in Grasby, if memory serves me correctly.
I've just unearthed the final Lincolnshire League averages for the 1987 season and the chart shows George, in his days with the Lincoln club, topping the premier division averages with 51 wickets from 249 overs, average 9.0.
Runner-up was seamer Chris Knapton (Market Rasen) with slow left-arm spinner Dave Marshall (Normanby Park) third, Andy Ellis (then App-Frod, now Cleethorpes) in fourth spot, and Grimsby Town off-spinner Dave Allen fifth.
Paul Butler (Skegness) topped the premier divison batting (796 runs @ 53.0), ahead of Steve Bradford (Hartsholme).
Division one's bowling averages were led by Phil Glentworth (Broughton), a statistic to impress son Robbie, who these days opens the club's bowling. Dad Phil claimed 48 wickets (@ 8.6).
A real character led the way in division three, Felix Holt grabbing 66 wickets for Kirton Lindsey.
Most fielder of the match awards (11) went to Mark Gowshall (Caistor), while Stuart Phillipson (Claytons) claimed the best all-round performance in one match, making 101 and taking five for 37 against Scunthorpe Town.
Veterans to the fore included Chris Keywood (Hartsholme 2nds), Allan Pashby (NPW), Ian Armiger (App-Frod), Don Stewart Snr (Outcasts), Howard Swain (Cleethorpes) and Mike James (Gy BRSA).
Still playing today for Owmby in division two, Edwin Chappell was well up the batting averages in division one for South Kelsey, and just below him finished a certain Wayne Noon (Caistor), later to make the grade in first class cricket as a keeper/batsman.
Glancing down the charts reveals the names of clubs which has since departed the Lincs League scene, including Ross Sports, Nuform, Normanby Park, Saxilby, Lincoln Claytons, Belton, Southcliffe, Nettleton Mines, Grimsby BRSA and St John's.
Golden memories, indeed!

DISGRACEFUL DAMAGE

South Kelsey Cricket Club, with two teams in the Lincolnshire League, has suffered a major blow with up to £2,000 damage caused to facilities.
Secretary Mike Owen wants Lincs Cricket Latest to warn other club officials.
He explains: "On the 13th October our groundsman found that a break-in had occurred at our pavilion at Lysaght's, Holton-le-Moor. The outer door had been hacked down and all areas searched. The internal door to the new hot water cylinder had also been cut open. The water pipes feeding to the cylinder had been crudely hacked away and the cylinder removed. The person, or persons, involved also entered the tea room adjacent to the pavilion. The cylinder was then dragged over the pitch to be transported away. A toolbox was also taken.
"The pavilion was upgraded last year (including the shower system) following our promotion to the Premier Division and is very upsetting to members. The total cost of damage/water system could be as much as £2,000. This comes after a similar break-in two years ago when a cylinder was also hacked away and stolen. We changed from a diesel hot water system to electric, as the diesel tank was constantly been drained by thieves.
"The police at Caistor are involved, but if anyone has any information that might bring those responsible to justice could they please let me know and I will pass the information to the police. I can be contacted on 07775906999."
We are sure everyone in local cricket will sympathise with Mike, first team skipper Lol Waghorn and all our other good friends at South Kelsey and hope Lincolnshire Police are able to catch the offender(s) and bring them to justice.

GOING TO BARBADOS?

Affable all-rounder Dave Willey injected a note of humour into tonight's North Lindsey League AGM at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, in his role as league chairman.
With the clubs readily accepting treasurer Enid Girling's balance sheet showing finances in a healthy state, Dave - the Bottesford Town veteran - joked that league officials ought to be jetting off to the West Indies during the close season to see how they run Sunday club cricket over there!

WHO'S DRAWN WHO

Glen Sands and myself earlier tonight completed the draws for the Lincolnshire League's 2010 George Marshall Trophy and Bob Welton Cup.
The procedure was slightly unusual this year, as we were joined by two independent scrutineers, Appleby-Frodingham's Mick Bramley and Paul Hilton, who actually drew the names out of Glen's makeshift hat.
Glen and I, as officers of the Lincs League, were going to do the draws ourselves in the Brumby Hall cricket pavilion, following the AGM of the North Lindsey League. But rather than keep Paul and Mick hanging about to lock up the building, we gladly took up their offer to adjourn to the more luxurious surroundings of the nearby Social Club...over a pint!
Very pleasant it was, too. And thanks to the assistance of the two Steelmen we were able to get the job done in record time.
The draws will shortly appear in Lincs Cricket Latest, and hopefully the local press, so keep reading to see who your team has drawn.
On my way out of Brumby Hall I was stopped for an enjoyable chat about old times by former App-Frod, Bottesford and Brigg all-rounder Ian Grice. And he's already been pencilled into the Lincs Cricket Latest team for next August bank holiday's annual charity match at Outcasts CC, against Ian Fletcher's fellow veterans.
You can never start too early getting your team together!
The digital camera was working overtime tonight, as was the pen, so watch out for fully illustrated reports in the days ahead.

ADDING 'GLOS' TO DUCKS SAGA

A few weeks ago, when Hibaldstow's Jon Taylor opened the Lincs Cricket Latest debate about runs of ducks, or absence of them, we promised to bring you news of the man we consider to be the Daddy Of All Duck-makers (or should that be Drake?).
It's taken a little time to turn up the relevant info, but we've managed it at last.
During the 1986 season, Tony Glossop (Brigg Town 2nds/3rds) surely set the standard all others have failed to reach - before or since.
For after an horrendous run of 14 successive noughts (stretching way back to the previous campaign), the cricketer with arguably the worst weekend batting record in the area finally broke his duck. But only just - scrambling a single in the North Lindsey League match against Holy Trinity (Gainsborough).
"Basically, I intended to play it down," he said of the delivery from which he managed that vital run. "It came off my bat and over the fielder's hands. I got a big round of applause." And the secret? He was using a borrowed bat for the first time.
The previous day had seen him make a first-ball "golden" in the South Humberside Alliance.
However, it should be pointed out Tony's bad run was in weekend cricket. He enjoyed a bit more success midweek, making 10 not out in a Broughton and District Evening League encounter with Sir John Nelthorpe School during 1985 (the previous summer). The 1984 season saw him record 14 runs in 14 knocks (some of which may have been not out).
Big-hearted Tony decided to used his lack of batting success to raise money for charity. The weekend after his run of 14 successive ducks became public knowledge outside Brigg Town CC he attempted to raise cash for starving people in Africa by being sponsored per run during the Alliance match against Grimsby BRSA 2nds and the the Sunday clash with West Butterwick. Sorry, I can't recall how much he made.
The old politician's saying 'All publicity is good publicity' clearly rang true for Tony - later to become a councillor himself. For he soon enjoyed 'a purple patch' in the Glanford Sport For All tournament, scoring 10.
However, it was only six-a-side and some spoilsport statistician within Brigg Town CC (guess who?) ruled any runs scored/wickets taken in that event would not count in official career records.
Hibaldstow won the tournament, with Brigg runners-up and Wrawby third. They were the only entrants - a very disappointing turn-out.
I did manage to locate the information about Tony's run of ducks 23 years ago, but don't expect a photo to appear of my silver medal for finishing second ahead of the mighty Wrawby in that six-a-side knockabout!
I seem to recall batting with Tony when he hit a straight six against South Kelsey which just carried into a hedge beyond the boundary.
Now you may be visualising the layout of the Nettleton Mines ground and thinking that must have been a pretty big hit for a man with so many ducks to his name. However, it should be pointed out the game I'm recalling 20-plus years ago was at Kelsey's old ground.
And those readers who played at Skipworth Ridge will fully understand the relevance of the venue in this tale.

TIMELY REMINDER

The North Lindsey League holds its AGM tomorrow (Thurs Oct 29) at Brumby Hall cricket pavilion, Scunthorpe (7.30pm), including trophy presentations, as there's no longer an annual dinner (due to lack of support from clubs and players).
I'm hoping to get along - camera in hand - to record the action.

AUTUMN TASKS FOR GROUNDSMEN

By Jon Taylor, Hibaldstow CC - Lincs groundsman of the year
It's a month now since the seed and soil were put down on the Hibaldstow square. Here's a brief update of what's gone on since then and what actions I've followed as a result.
The first ten days or so after seeding were very dry, although there were many mornings with heavy dew. Grass seed needs moisture to germinate and so that dry period delayed everything.
The first signs of germination were seen about two weeks ago, the seed that had fallen into the grooves cut by the scarifier showing first.
Now, at the end of October, much of the square shows good germination with the young grass about 1" tall.
I won't cut the square until there is a good overall coverage or until the most advanced areas are at risk of getting too long. I prefer to let the plants get a bit of strength before cutting them off.
However, several areas, most notably the old batting ends and the wickets used late in the season are still showing poor germination.
This is nothing to be worried too much about, so long as there is clear sign of seed still in the area. However, to be safe I have just overseeded these areas. The ground conditions were a little too moist to seed and then cover with loam, so the method adopted was to scatter seed and then manually scarifiy in with a hand tool.
In the picture you can see the tool and just about see the grooves cut at right angles to allow the fresh seed to get a little cover. This approach is not ideal, but with young seedlings present I feel it is better to err on the side of caution than to smother the existing growth. The young plants also act as traps to reduce wash-off of the fresh seed. Come Christmas these areas will hopefully show good coverage. The other big issue on the square at this time of year is worm casts.

Some say that worms are good - and I have no doubt that they are vital in the veg patch, but they are one of the cricket groundsman's worst enemies.
Casting worms create surface unevenness, the casts kill the grass and create ideal sites for weed seeds to grow.
The casts also wreck mower blades. Treating worms is not something that anyone can do. There are a limited number of treatments available and almost all need authorised people to carry out the application. My square was treated today.
Next weekend, conditions allowing, I will drag-mat the whole square to break up those casts that have been formed.
This process also stimulates the young grass plants into branching and so will help thicken up the cover.

LINCS PREMIER 2010 - PROVISIONAL

Watch out for divisions one to four throughout next week

Provisional, draft fixtures as sent out to clubs by Glen Sands for the Lincolnshire League. Important note: These are liable to change.

Last season they were some distance apart - but on the opening day of the 2010 Lincolnshire League premier division season, on April 17, Caistor (relegated from the Lincs ECB competition) will visit Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, to take on Appleby-Frodingham 2nds (newly-promoted from Lincs division one, as the third-placed team). Messingham first teamers, who have also come down from the Lincs ECB, open with a visit to Bracebridge Heath 2nds. The other promoted team from division one, Scunthorpe Town, trek down to Horncastle. Cleethorpes 2nds and Alkborough, who were both championship-chasers for much of last season, meet up at Chichester Road, on the opening day of the season. South Kelsey, who also came close to the 2009 title, visit Marsh Lane to take on Barton Town.

NO INCREASE IN TEAM FEES

Lincs League costs stay same in 2010

By Mike Savage, general secretary, Lincs League
The Lincolnshire County Cricket League AGM was held at Market Rasen CC on Wednesday, October 21 at 7.30pm.
The roll call was taken, present being the president, all officials (except vice-chairman Preston Wallhead who was on holiday) and the ECB rep.
The minutes of the AGM in 2008 were received with no matters arising.
The chairman, Bob Welton, thanked all club officials, helpers and umpires for their contributiosn throughout the season, which had been blessed with good weather.
He congratulated all the winners and hoped Hartsholme would enjoy their elevation to the Lincs ECB League next year.
The general secretary thanked all the committee for their hard work and dedication that had helped the league run smoothly. He commented on cases of discipline which had made work that could have been unnecessary with goodwill - but most teams were playing within the Spirit of the Game.
The treasurer (Bryan Simpson) reported a surplus for the season of £83.13p and a balance in hand of £6,338.92p. He recommended that the handbook and registration fees remain the same for 2010, and that the league paid the ECB affiliation fees for clubs in this league. These recommendations were agreed and the report adopted, subject to audit.
The fixture secretary (Glen Sands) and results secretary (Nigel Fisher) reported on their work and commented on the success of the points deduction "fine" in getting results in on time. The Press were thanked for their reports, and clubs generally thanked for their help.
The statistician (Andy Sharp) was thanked for his detailed report presented to clubs. He commented on the fact all clubs should make scoresheet entries as clear as possible, with names and initials, to make his work a little easier.
All officers were thanked for their reports and efforts throughout the season.
The president and all officers offered themselves for re-election and were voted back en bloc by the meeting.
The general secretary gave 12 months' notice as to his position.
The following rule changes were voted on (see handbook for current rules):
Rule 6.2: September starts to be 12.30pm in the premier and 1pm in all other divisions. Carried 29-1.
Rules 4.1 and 4.4: Re-wording and addition to rules about strengthening teams with players of a higher standard - two motions carried 28-1 and 26-3.
Rule 4.5: No longer permit overseas players. Rejected 3-20.
Add Rule 11: Restrict overs for bowlers in all games. Rejected 5-20.
Ground inspection reports were received and noted by the meeting, Ron Borsberry and Gordon Turner (the inspectors) being thanked for their efforts.
After much debate and discussion the committee's recommendation for 11 teams in the premier division for 2010 - and 10 in all other divisions - was adopted.
This meant Scunthorpe 3rds, Market Rasen 2nds and Louth 3rds needed to make presentations of their cases for election/re-election, with a vote for two places out of three being made by secret ballot. This resulted in Market Rasen receiving 35 votes, Scunthorpe 3rds 23 and Louth 12 - the first named two being re-elected.
Clubs were reminded of the need to pay subscriptions by November 30, to bring to the January meeting match ball orders per half-dozen at £15 per ball, to send back the pro forma, make nominations for the most improved player under-21, bring along scorebooks, and make nomintions for secretary of the year.
Also at the January meeting, if possible, will be a presentation about the idea of introducing an online results/registration system.
Presentations of pennants to league winners will also be at that meeting, at which all trophies are to be returned in a clean state.
Fixtures for 2010 will be formatted for Saturdays, and clubs are asked to let Glen Sands know unavailable home dates so fixtures can be formatted as soon as possible.
Proposed dates for 2010 meetings: Wednesday, January 13; Wednesday, April 14; Wednesday, July 14; Wednesday, October 13 (AGM), all at Market Rasen CC (7.30pm).
The meeting closed at 9.53pm.

MINOR COUNTIES REMEMBERED

Trip down memory lane with Lincs

"Yours truly" has just been confirmed as guest speaker at the Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers' monthly get-together on Thursday, November 12, 7.30pm, at Cleethorpes CC.
My topic this time will be Minor Counties Cricket - Home and Away, Players and Grounds. Non-members are welcome at the Chichester Road venue, and you can pay the small entrance fee required on the night.
The talk will focus on my years spent covering Lincolnshire's Minor Counties games - home and away - from 1984-90. For some of that time, overseas stars were permitted, and a number of Test players appeared against Lincs. In our own line-up at the time were the likes of Geoff Robinson, Harry Pougher, Dave Marshall, Pete Wood, Bob Leafe, Dave Allen, Jim Quincey, Paul Butler, Nigel Dobbs (pictured), Rick Burton, Neil Priestley, Steve Braithwaite, Mark Fell, Paul Todd, Dave Gilbert, Tim Hopper...and many, many more.
Among the away grounds was Bignall End (try SatNav on that one!) and Knypersley (where we were offered a trip round a coal-mining museum), while home fixtures were then played regularly at the incredibly rural Burghley Park (right on the border with Cambridgeshire).
This will be the second time I've been called in to substitute for the Cricket Lovers this year, following unexpected unavailability of the original speakers.
My earlier talk looked at Characters of Lincolnshire Club Cricket.

DEL BOY ON RIGHT TRACK

'Cushty' point about away game SatNav

Lincolnshire cricket's very own Del Boy - Scunthorpe Town's Del Crabb - doesn't drive a yellow three-wheeler van, but he did make what the TV character might well call a "cushty" point about travelling to away matches during the Lincs League AGM in Market Rasen.
Our Del stressed the postcodes of all member clubs' grounds should be included in the 2010 league handbook - and be correctly listed - for the benefit of those Lincs League players using modern SatNav technology to get to away games.
During this summer, Lincs Cricket Latest reported how a SatNav-assisted contingent from Cleethorpes CC - heading for a ground in the Lincoln area - found themselves at the wrong location after a slight mix-up over the postcode.
League general secretary Mike Savage replied to Del's point by revealing some clubs had failed to update their handbook entries for up to three years, despite reminders. He urged everyone to check their entries and let him know any changes required.
Del's SatNav suggestion set me thinking about locating grounds under the old-fashioned system. Quite often, with Brigg having a young team of relative newcomers (plus one or two veteran exceptions), we'd meet up in the car park of the Black Bull and the designated car drivers would assume I knew the way. "We'll just follow Scoop," they'd say.
Sometimes it might have been 10, or even 20, years since I last visited a particular ground - but the lads still expected you to know the way.
I wonder how SatNav - clearly a wonderful invention - will cope with locating Brocklesby Park's ground. The nearest residence, with postcode, to that rural outpost will belong to a certain Peer of the Realm - the Earl of Yarborough, long-serving club president, who has made some appearances in friendly games (see their impressive website, administered by Richard Bedwell, for details).
Next season, if you play at Brocklesby, use SatNav for directions and find yourself drawing up outside a very impressive and historic mansion, don't disturb His Lordship - the ground's in the other direction!
Up to this season you might have had a little difficulty locating East Halton's home venue - past the silo, over the cattle grid, in a field at Townside Farm; but now the villagers have moved to play at Blossom Way, Immingham. So no problems there.
Whenever I go to Grimsby or Cleethorpes, I always remember the location of grounds while driving along. Like Carr Lane, once the home of Grimsby BRSA; Littlefields; Lucarly's/Findus/Club CC; Tioxide (near the big chimney). Plus what's now Stamford Homes, which many will remember in decades gone by as Laporte's and then SCM.
It's the same with Grimsby/Cleethorpes school grounds, some of which I'd have played on almost 40 years ago for Brigg Grammar.
Visits to an elderly relative on the outskirts of Lincoln take me within a few yards of Lincoln Lindum (where I covered so many Lincolnshire Minor Counties matches), and bring back memories of away games against Claytons, Southcliffe, St John's and Rustons. Auntie lives not far from Hykeham's ground, and back in the late 1970s Brigg had a trip or two round the outskirts of Lincoln to Waddington, when they were in Lincs div three.
Those of us on the Scunthorpe umpires' panel have to get ourselves to many locations, especially in the North Lindsey League, where our association covers almost all the matches in a 60-mile stretch from Grimsby Town and Cleethorpes on the east coast to Wheatley (near Retford) in the west.
I always like the drive across country from Brigg to Gainsborough, passing close to the grounds of Kirton Lindsey (no longer playing league cricket), and Blyton, who were stalwart members of this Sunday competition for many years.
Roses pulling out of the North Lindsey League this season was a shame, but Marshalls remain to fly the flag for Gainsborough, together with Morton, who have just enjoyed their first season in Lincs div three.
Occasionally, Scunthorpe umpires 'help out' neighbouring associations who are short of officials. So we may be offered unexpected games in the Bassetlaw League, or in the Lincoln area. In the latter category, two or three seasons ago, I went to Saxilby with Mick Walker, our fixture secretary, who fortunately was driving, as I'd never been there before, although they did have a team in the top half of the Lincs League back in the 1970s.
My biggest nightmare on the travel front to date has been trying to find Upton-Cum-Kexby (pictured here). AA Route Finder was little use once you got beyond Caenby Corner - it tries to send you by A-roads of motorways where possible. I covered mile after mile of single-track minor roads until finally - more by luck than good judgment - locating the ground.
Returning to the Lincs League, there was always a warm welcome and an enjoyable game to be had when visiting Skegness 2nds, when they were in the league, and Alford 2nds.
Both long drives south, but we never minded.
For a few years in the Humberside Alliance (now defunct) much interest was generated by the election of BP Aces and BP Chemicals, who shared a ground at Saltend on the far side of Hull and provided some very, very impressive cricket teas. Bridge tolls, for a time, were paid by Humberside County Council, under a sponsorship agreement, as the authority was keen to encourage integration of the North and South banks.

MORE OVERS FOR UNDER-15s

ECB eases restrictions for 2010

Young bowlers throughout Lincolnshire will benefit from changes in the restrictions placed on them by the ECB.
Club representatives attending the Lincs League AGM this week received the news from Lincoln umpires' representative Steve Massingham.
The Lincolnshire League, and clubs, had yet to be told by the governing body in London.
Steve reported the new limits, coming into effect at the start of next season, will be:
  • Under-13s: Five overs a spell (10 maximum per match).

  • Under-14s/under-15s: Six overs a spell (12 in a match).

  • Under-16s, under-17s, under-18s, under-19s: Seven overs a spell (18 in a match).

  • These so-called 'fast bowling' directives do not apply to spin/slow bowlers, for whom a keeper of his age group could comfortably stand up to the stumps.
The ECB says the fast bowling directives have changed following a two-year consultation process. The outcome is that bowlers up to under-15 level are now able to bowl longer spells and more overs in a day.
Under the new guidelines bowlers at under-16 and under-17 level are now permitted to bowl an extra over per spell, but those in the under-18 and under-19 category have had the total number of overs they can deliver per day reduced from 21 to 18.
These guidelines will come into effect for the start of the 2010 season.
The fast bowling guidelines are designed to raise awareness of the need to nurture and protect young fast bowlers through their formative years. Research has shown that fast bowlers are by far the most likely players to be missing playing and training time due to injury.
Lincs Cricket Latest has located the relevant information on the ECB website, and here's a helpful link to take you straight there, if you wish to read more
    Fast bowling directives

    SMALL SURPLUS

    Five games conceded during season

The Lincolnshire County Cricket League showed a surplus of £83.13p on the year, treasurer Bryan Simpson (Brougton) told the AGM, held in Market Rasen.
His written report/balance sheet showed five matches conceded during the season, resulting in fines (and point deductions).

    PERFECT TENS

Scunthorpe umpire stands in most matches

A Scunthorpe and district umpire stood in more Lincolnshire League premier division games than anyone this summer.
Mick Stothard, the former Broughton CC all-rounder, officiated in 10 matches - one more than fellow Scunthorpe panel colleagues Paul Goodhand and Brian Creasey.
Some 44 umpires - drawn from the Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Lincoln associations - handled premier division games during the 2009 season.
We don't have a mandate to publish the average marks gained by each official but can reveal 'perfect 10s' were awarded to umpires on six occasions by delighted captains.
The highest average over the season was 9.00 and the lowest 6.50, with 18 umpires averaging 8.0 or better, which reflects a pretty high standard.
Lincolnshire League statistician Andy Sharp has compiled a comprehensive table showing each umpire's marks in the top flight - copies going to the respective associations.

MANY THANKS TO THE COUNTY PRESS

Results secretary Nigel Fisher's report to the Lincs League AGM

Firstly, my personal thanks go to all club secretaries, captains and stand-ins who have phoned through scores, match highlights and fully completed scoresheets on time over what’s been a full five-month season.
The main talking point on the results front has been the introduction, for the first time, of a small points deduction for failing to supply information on the evening of the match. There have been very few occasions when this has needed to be imposed, and on no occasion has a team been guilty of a second offence. So, in my opinion, the points deduction rule change has proved a welcome one.
Getting the information on time has helped Glen Sands in compiling up-to-date league tables on Sunday mornings to include points gained in matches played the previous day.
I would also like to put on record the league’s thanks to all the newspapers – large and small – which have afforded coverage to the affairs of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League, particularly the Grimsby Telegraph, the Scunthorpe Telegraph and the Lincolnshire Echo. As chairman Bob Welton has said at previous meetings, our league enjoys unrivalled Press coverage.
This has been complemented by the launch of my Lincs Cricket Latest website – recording funny and unusual incidents from Lincs League matches, team pictures, and other items of interest to players and clubs in our five divisions. With the site traffic counter earlier today showing 16,300, Lincs Cricket Latest has proved very popular since its launch in mid-June. I must admit I didn’t expect anything like that many hits. Content will continue to be added during the close season.
As a league we are again being asked to consider introducing an online system to record our results and scorecards, and I understand we will be looking to fully debate that issue at a forthcoming Executive Committee meeting here in Market Rasen. It will be up to member clubs to decide whether they wish to go down that route, or to stay with the current system – deemed by some to be old-fashioned.
In conclusion I hope, this time next year, to be able to deliver a similarly positive report on a great 2010 season for our league.

    UMPIRES' GROUND MARKS

We continue our in-depth look at this week's Lincs League AGM by considering the ground markings awarded by the umpires.
Officials from the Lincoln, Grimsby and Scunthorpe panels are asked to award a combined mark on the scoresheet at each match - premier division down to division four - looking only at the playing area (inside the boundary), and not considering changing rooms, scoreboards, sightscreens, tea facilities, etc, which form part of the official league ground inspection procedure.
Andy Sharp, the Lincs League statistician, has transformed all this information into useful at-a-glance tables, print-offs being given to all club delegates attending the meeting at Market Rasen on Wednesday.

    RECORD FOR NATHAN?

Just got back from tonight's very interesting Lincolnshire County Cricket League AGM at Market Rasen CC. As expected it was a pretty long, drawn-out affair, with much to get through - and there is a great deal to report on over the coming days.
Keep watching Lincs Cricket Latest and the columns of the Grimsby Telegraph, Scunthorpe Telegraph and Lincolnshire Echo.
There was a full turn-out of member clubs, plus representatives of the respective Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Lincoln Umpires' Associations.
But here's a poser to begin with, put to me after the meeting by Hykeham stalwart Graham Poundall: Was their Nathan, who only turned 20 a few weeks into the 2009 season, the youngest ever captain of a championship-winning team in the Lincolnshire League premier division?
Nathan's Hartsholme side, of course, also did the double by winning the George Marshall Knockout Trophy, and have now gained deserved elevation to the Lincs ECB Premier League for 2010.
League statistician Andy Sharp (Keelby CC) handed out copies of interesting tables he has produced for each of the five divisions, showing the average marks awarded to each team's playing area (inside the boundary) by the umpires.
Not to be confused with the marks from the Lincolnshire League inspectors, Ron Borsberry and Gordon Turner, who look at not only square and outfield but also off-the-field facilities and equipment.
In due course we'll be posting the umpires' ground marking charts for cricket followers to study.
On his way out to the car park, Andy "Chippy" Clay, skipper of Alkborough 2nds, got in a bit of a dig about 'yours truly' being let down by flat batteries in the Lincs Cricket Latest digital camera during a late-season visit to West Halton Lane.
It didn't matter tonight - there were no moments of history to record. But, for Andy's benefit, we had checked the batteries were fully charged before setting off for Rasen!
League fixture secretary Glen Sands is already working hard to get the fixtures formulated for next season, and he and I will meet up shortly, in Scunthorpe, to make the draws for the George Marshall and Bob Welton KO competitions. So no real rest period for us.
There will be Lincs League meetings in January and April, plus the joint annual dinner with the Grimsby League at Grimsby Town FC's McMenemy's Suite in March. Before we know it, the 2010 season will then be upon us - and another five months of high activity will follow.
    Phew!
