OUTCASTS WIN LEAGUE

By Glen Sands

The Snaith & District evening cricket league drew to a close last week and it produced two of the tightest finishes at the foot of Division Two and at the top of Division Three before relegation and promotion issues were decided.
The only game that escaped the inclement weather saw Goole Firemen beat Airmyn to climb off the bottom of the table , scoring 153 for 6 thanks chiefly to Mitchell who hit 51 and Eastwood who added 32 before Airmyn were restricted to 89 for 6 as Sparks made 29 and Brigham 24 whilst Burn v newly crowned Champions Hirst Courtney was rained off as was Carlton Towers v Pollington.
This meant that Carlton Towers and Airmyn finished level at the foot of the table with identical records which necessitated a runs to wickets calculation to determine who finished bottom.
The records for the two teams were as follows:
Airmyn 1560 runs 92 wickets average 16.95
Carlton Towers 2323 runs 78 wickets average 29.78

This means that Airmyn have the misfortune of finishing bottom of the table.
In Division Three it proved to be even closer when Outcasts v Howden Town was postponed due to rain , leaving both clubs locked on 27 points and with identical records so the calculaters were produced once more and these were the findings:
Howden Town 1118 runs 57 wickets average 19.61
Outcasts 918 runs 43 wickets average 21.34

This means that Outcasts finish top of the table by the closest of margins
So the season ends with Askern Welfare as Division One Champions and Goole Town as Snaith League Shield wnners whilst Hirst Courtney topped Division Two and lifted the Arthur Brant Trophy with Airmyn finishing bottom and finally Outcasts clinched the Third Division title by the narrowest of margins in their first season , just pipping Howden who battled courageously throughout the summer.
