Bowlers dominated the latest Grimsby Town Knock Out first round match which was also marked by good fielding from both sides.
Lincolnshire Cavaliers were up against Messingham who won the toss, but their invitation to Cavaliers to bat looked to be a mistake as Baildon team mates Tom Webb and Jonny Reynolds put on 47 in the first four overs.
The final ball of this quarter of the game saw Webb bowled by Andy Langford and from here, the rate slowed as Langford and Paul Taylor pinned the batsmen down.
With 10 runs added, Langford claimed two more wickets, including that of Reynolds who hit 40 off 27 balls with a six and six fours.
Guest player Alex Heslop from Blyth then joined forces with Matt Rutherford to add 30 but Taylor and Keiran Lindley both got among the wickets until Market Rasen wicketkeeper George Fussey joined forces with Rutherford in a partnership of 30.
At the close, Rutherford had made an unbeaten 51 off 47 balls with a six and three fours as Cavaliers finished 155 for nine, Langford taking four wickets and Taylor bowling an economical four overs that brought him two for 23.
Former Grimsby player Richard Antcliffe opened for Messingham with Vardik Raj and found the going tough from the start against the bowling of Matt Webb and Kristian Adams
And in the second over, Adams dismissed both, leaving the Scunthorpe side 10 for two.
New Zealand U19 player Cameron Fletcher and Nick White stopped the slide but after four overs, Messingham had only 19 on the board and a wicket for Webb in the fifth over made it 28 for three.
Adams took the next and the fifth fell to Tom Webb on 49.  From here, Messingham staged a revival, Fletcher and Rick Dannatt adding 39 but it was not enough as wickets again began to tumble.
Fletcher was out for 45, caught off Jon Miller, and the match ended with Messingham on 107 for nine, Adams with four for 17 and Miller taking three for 17 off three overs.
The game was sponsored by Oxley Garage Doors and Adams’ bowling earned him the Man of the Match award.
Next week’s final first round fixture is between trophy holders and hosts Grimsby Town and Caistor.
On Sunday, beginning at 1pm, many of the players – including the Webb brothers, Miller and Antcliffe – will be supporting the JB Evans Cavaliers v RJ Taylor’s Grimsby Town charity match in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice.
