BRIGG 'OLD BOYS' BEATEN SIR JOHN NELTHORPE SCHOOL

Forward defensive to a ball of good length as the shadows lengthen

Does Brigg now boast the only remaining "Old Boys" cricket match in northern Lincolnshire?
Last night saw a Briggensians' Association team take on a Sir John Nelthorpe XI on the school field, on a marvellous evening for cricket - bright sunshine and no hint of rain.
This annual fixture can trace its roots back many decades to the era of Brigg Grammar School.
Sadly, many such games at other schools disappeared with the onset of comprehensive education. But Brigg manages to keep up the tradition.
Afterwards the Old Boys met up to chat about old times at the Yarborough Hunt, in Bridge Street.
The Briggensians were not too far short of their daunting target of 130 - posted by the School in their 13 eight-ball overs.
Jon Taylor, of Hibaldstow Cricket Club, umpired the match and was thanked by both teams.
The Briggensians' Association represents former pupils and staff of Brigg Grammar, Brigg Girls' High, Sir John Nelthorpe and Brigg Sixth Form. Similar reunion matches are held for hockey, rounders, golf and football.
Brigg Grammar School, founded in 1669, ended in 1976 when comprehensive education was introduced. Last night's game involved only two players old enough to have attended the grammar school. You can guess the identity of one of them!
