By Matt Dobson, Cherry Willingham 2nds
Last Saturday, Cherry 2nds made the short trip to Washingborough in what had been described in the local press as a Lincs League Division 3 local derby.
Many of the players from either side knew each other and have faced each other on the cricket field on many occasions.
Cherry were asked to bat first and I opened. It was extremely windy and difficult for umpires or captains to be heard, either to confirm a guard or amending the field.
Ben Jackson sent down a delivery which I tried to drop defensively on the leg side but only succeeded in inside edging. Ben appealed for LBW, having not heard the edge, and the umpire, who had also not picked up the nick, raised the finger of death.
I commenced a slow, disappointed trudge towards the pavilion and was 10 yards from the square when home skipper Kenny Coyle called me back.
It was a really sporting gesture and one which was much appreciated. Unsurprisingly I was out shortly after so there was no damage done!
