ONE OF THE BEST FOR UMPIRE KEITH

By Keith Hunt,
ECB ACO Umpire - Lincs League and East Lindsey League

I am emailing about the match I umpired on Sunday, 29th May 2011, Hainton v Keelby, East Lindsey League Div 2, with my colleague Juliet Barnes.
Juliet has only been umpiring for two years; myself, since 1984, with a 7-year absence due to illness.
This was one of my best matches I have done.
Both teams entered into the spirit of the game.
Both captains had control of their teams.
There was no questioning the umpires' decisions.
Infact I would say from my experience as an umpire, 23 people had a game of cricket and a laugh (23 as Keelby only had 10).
I did thank both captains, but what I didn't tell them was I would be contacting someone in the League.
I hope the rest of the season is played in that manner.

CHICKEN'S HOME TO ROOST AGAIN AT ALKBOROUGH

I umpired yesterday's Lincs div two game at West Halton Lane between Alkborough 2nds and Keelby, when the ground's spectating chicken was again a talking point (see our earlier posting on this topic by searching for Chicken).
Having lapped the boundary and visited the spectators in their viewing hut in the corner of the ground, it got braver and ventured right out into the middle, having to be escorted from the field of play by Alkborough batsman Neil Gray - in the direction of the clubhouse.
One further chicken/cricket-related pun came to me yesterday: Pullet to leg.
If that made you groan, we'd like to point out that it seemed to amuse one or two of the Keelby lads.

HARTSHOLME SPRING SURPRISE

By Ann Boulton

Market Deeping closed the gap on Bracebridge Heath at the top of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League with a convincing win over current champions Bourne while Hartsholme scored a surprise victory over Louth to put themselves well clear of the three teams below them at the foot of the table.
But it was Lindum who made the most significant move, bouncing back up to third with a 20 point win over Woodhall Spa who slumped from 68 for two to 106 all out, Matt Rutherford bowling 11 overs, five of which were maidens and taking five wickets for just 17 runs.
In reply, Lindum found themselves seven for two then 58 for five but from here Rutherford and Harry Dunn got together to score the 49 runs required for victory.
Sleaford elected to bat at Cross O’ Cliff Court and Matthew Mountain’s 54 helped the total to 203 for eight. Bracebridge were then reduced to 74 for three but Paul Cook and George Neal put together an unbeaten partnership that took their team to victory, Cook with 89 and Neal 53.
At Ashby Avenue, with the score on 190 for five, Warren Nel still at the crease and plenty of overs to go, Hartsholme looked set for a big score. But Nel was stumped off Mark Roberts for 119 and some tight bowling from Nuwan Shiroman and Tom Corden saw the home side slump to 212 all out in the 47th over, Corden finishing with four wickets.
Louth lost two early wickets and by the 31st over had been restricted to 124 for five with Stewart West making 67 of these runs. But the lower order dug in until Nel rejoined the attack to take three wickets and the visitors’ challenge ended 15 runs short as the last wicket fell on 197.
Nettleham gained valuable points at home to Boston to stay above Sleaford at the bottom of the table. Dan Wright finished in the 90s for the second time this season as he was out for 96 with Phil Brown hitting 54 and Tom Baxter taking six wickets. The visitors then made hard work of chasing the runs and could only reach 157 for eight, Matt Ward with 50 and Jack Bayliss taking five wickets for Nettleham.
Skegness pulled off the shock result of the day, beating Grimsby, who had occupied third place. Playing at Richmond Road, the seasiders finished on 169 for nine, Norman Brackley with 40 and Carl Wilson 44 while Lee Charlton took four wickets for Grimsby who could only manage 145 before the final wicket fell.
Market Deeping made the day’s top score of 225 for nine at home to Bourne who were then bowled out for 112, Lee Peacock hitting 58 for Deeping and Tom Andrews taking five for 37.

DANIEL IS MAN OF MATCH

By Ann Boulton

Billingborough won the South Lincolnshire & Border League top of the table battle to take a 13 point lead over opponents Grantham who are now only three ahead of Belton Park.
Daniel Turner was the man of the match for Belton, taking five Bourne wickets then hitting 60 runs in his side’s eight wicket victory.
The closest game in Division One saw Lindum Ramblers beat Sleaford 2nd by just eight runs, Will Wright hitting 82 for Ramblers and Paul Roberts making 90 for Sleaford. This left Sleaford in fourth place with Moulton Harrox, who beat Boston 2nd, in fifth.
Skegness continued their good run at the top of Division Two with a nine wicket win over Cavaliers who dropped to fifth. Sleaford Sunday consolidated their second place with a win at Stamford, John Mountain and Phil Sneath each hitting centuries.
But Billingborough, now third, are in a good position to challenge Sleaford, having two games in hand, as have Heckington for whom Sam Elliott took a hat trick in his 6-28 which helped his side to beat Thomas Cook.
Division Three provided the tightest game of the day, Spalding 3rd retaining top position after a three run win over Grantham 2nd whose last wicket fell on 255 as they pursued Spalding’s 258 for nine of which Jamie Jukes hit 99.
Timberland moved into third after a nine run victory over Pinchbeck but only 13 points separate third and eighth.

LINCS BEAT YORKS

Lincolnshire Under-12s had a very comfortable win over Yorkshire B at Heslam Park, Scunthorpe, on Tuesday, easily chasing down the visitors' 135 for nine.

FAN-TASTIC TON TO NO AVAIL

By Glen Sands

Nigel Fanthorpe scored an excellent 100 against Outcasts in the First Round of the George Marshall Cup but it was all to no avail as his Grimsby Town 2nds fell 22 runs short of the 202 runs posted earlier in the day in what was an entertaining fixture at Hirsts Priory.
Outcasts batted first and continued their recent good form with a batting performance that saw several players chip in with decent scores. Openers Richard Wroot and Oliver Coulman both made 28 with Wroot going first , caught by Dan Wood off Richard Evans then Coulman being caught by Nigel Fanthorpe off Wood and when Andy Torr was trapped LBW by Wood the Priorymen were teetering on 75 for 3. David Hobson and Andy Lawson took the total to 115 with Lawson in particular showing great intent before he was out for 39 , caught and bowled by youngster Peter Freeman then Hobson was caught by Wood off Freeman again for 24 with the score on 138 for 5. Skipper Russell Fletcher and Graham Clark both batted well to move the total along to 165 before Clark was smartly stumped by wicket keeper Lee Maddock for 25 and Fletcher was next to go having reached 13 , caught by Dan Wood off the bowling of David White. Scott Buttrick also made a baker's dozen before he too was stumped by Maddock who then took two excellent catches behind the stumps to bring the innings to a close on 202 , Liam McAnaney and Jonathan Wroot being his victims for four and nine respectively.
The Grimsby reply saw them race to 31 without loss off just seven overs but Outcasts opening bowlers then fought back to bowl some very tight overs to stem the flow. Graham Clark then produced a quite stunning piece of fielding to run out opener Maddock for 21 and Jonathan Wroot , who had gone for 10 runs in his first three overs incredibly bowled his next SIX without conceding another run , leaving him with superb figures of 9 overs 6 maidens 1 for 10 ! Grimsby had slumped to 36 for 3 as Whiteley and Wroot had picked up a wicket each then Brendan Volley and the impressive Nigel Fanthorpe put together a stand of 79 before Volley was caught by Andy Lawson off Liam McAnaney for a well constructed 29. Fanthorpe continued to bat superbly but wickets were falling at the other end as non of his team mates were able to stick around with him. Graham Clark picked up two whilst McAnaney ended the innings with 4 for 28 and it was he who effectively finished the game as a contest when he bowled Fanthorpe out for the ninth wicket , not before the Grimsby opener had reached a well deserved 100 though. Richard Evans was last man out with the total on 178 which means that Outcasts will make a rare appearance in the George Marshall Cup 2nd Round in mid June when they will entertain Premier sides Cherry Willingham or Alford.
Next up for the Priorymen in the league is a tough encounter at home to Appleby-Frodingham 2nds whilst the seconds will travel to in-form Washingborough in Division Three, looking to bring to an end a run of poor form.

LOUTH MAN LEADING RUN-MAKER

By Ann Boulton

With five games played, six Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League players have already passed 250 runs for the season.
Topping the list with 327 is Nuwan Shiroman of Louth whose team heads for Hartsholme this weekend keen to build on last weekend’s high score and move further up the table. Louth lie fifth, only one point behind Bourne, but if Warren Nel is on form, Hartsholme will present strong opposition.
Bourne take on Market Deeping who are second in the table having posted some of the highest scores of the season and have the advantage of their good home ground. However, despite the lack of help that bowlers are receiving from the dry pitches, Fahad Masood has 22 wickets to his name and could prove a handful for the home side.
George Linde has only three wickets less than Masood and will be taking his lethal brand of spin to Skegness where Grimsby are defending their third place in the table. Skegness showed a big improvement last week and this could be one of the games to watch but the seasiders’ bowlers will need to be on top form against a strong batting line-up.
Leaders Bracebridge Heath are at home to Sleaford, whose lowly 11th place is perhaps an unfair reflection of their early performances and some close finishes. But Paul Cook has assembled a strong unit at Cross O’Cliff Court with a good mix of youth and experience and will be looking to build on recent successes at Sleaford’s expense.
Lindum will attempt to halt their slide down the table at home to Woodhall Spa who are still awaiting the arrival of Fawad Alam and are in need of a boost to their bowling attack. And Boston, who are just three points behind Lindum and six behind Louth travel to Nettleham looking for a victory that could take them into the top half of the table.
Monday brings the semi-finals and final of the Winkworth 20/20 Cup which takes place at Sleaford with the first match beginning at 10.30am. This will feature current trophy holders Bracebridge, who have won the cup four times and Grimsby who are two-times winners, the last time in 2008.
The only semi-finalists not to have held the trophy are Boston who take on Lindum, winners in 2005, at 1.30pm for a place in the final which is due to begin at 4.30pm. Spectators are welcome at London Road where the pavilion will be open all day and there is ample parking around the ground.

NO QUARTER TAKEN BY RAMPANT MEGGIES

By Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes bounced back from Saturday first Yorkshire league defeat at Rotherham to record a memorable 11-run win over Whitley Hall in the Quarter finals of the regional group of the ECN National Knockout cup. Sheffield side Whitley Hall , who are unbeaten in the South Yorkshire league for two years, won the toss and asked Cleethorpes to bat on what looked like a good batting strip. They soon showed their class as tight opening bowling lead to the demise of both Cleethorpes openers, Bill Kirby (0) and Rory Osmond (7) with only 16 on the board. Kirby failed to keep a clip of his legs down and was taken at square leg while Osmond’s stumps were shattered by a brutal Yorker from Wilson. Yaniv Judah and the promoted Charlie Tomlinson set about rebuilding with Tomlinson in typical aggressive mood. A number of ariel drives brought boundaries as he took advantage of the fielding restrictions. He also added two huge sixes courtesy of a clip off his legs and a strike over long off. The pair had added 75 in 79 balls for the third wicket when both perished in successive overs. The impressive off spinner Alex Welsh claimed Tomlinson soon after completing his half century when he found a leading edge and took a smart diving return catch. Judah, having played cautiously in making 25, fell unluckily when he edged to the keepers pads and the ball bounced back onto his stumps to claim a fortunate stumping. Once again Cleethorpes had to rebuild and James and Alex Osmond did just that. Following their century partnership at Rotherham the day previous the pair added another 75 for the fifth wicket. James was particularly adventurous walking down the wicket and twice clearing the ropes for sixes whilst also hitting five other boundaries. With brother Alex playing a more supportive role Cleethorpes edged to 166 before James chanced his arm once too often and lofted to cover for 44 in 43 balls. Alex now took up the mantle after seeing Windeatt depart for a duck. He had reached 47 in 66 balls when he bottom edged another short delivery from Wilson and departed bowled. Harry Clewett (15) and Peter Thompson (11 not out) ensured Cleethorpes passed 200 and Nathan Judah was run out off the final delivery as the innings closed with Cleethorpes all out for 215.
Peter Thompson’s brief cameo had resulted in a back injury which meant he was unable to field. Fortunately Martin Twyman deputised but Cleethorpes were now a bowler light. Whitley openers Welsh and Tasker looked in little trouble against Jack Harrison and Nathan Judah and added 39 in a little over 8 overs. It took the introduction of Alex Osmond to break the pair with only his second delivery as he dragged Tasker down the wicket for Windeatt to complete a neat stumping. With Harry Clewett bowling in tandem with Osmond, Cleethorpes were now able to gain control as Whitley’s batsmen found the bounce and turn awkward to play. The pair bowled a combine total of 18 overs for just 46 runs as the runs dried up and the pressure increased. Osmond claimed his second wicket trapping Welsh in front with the score on 85 in the 25th over to finish with impressive figures of 2/18 in his nine-over spell. Clewett remained wicketless as his nine overs went for just 28. With the wicket continuing to turn Skipper James Osmond took the responsibility of filling the extra bowling slot. Bowling his occasional off spin he was able to tie one end down despite Whitley Skipper Fletcher playing a brilliant innings in the middle order. Coming in at 100-4 after Harrison had removed Longhurst to a cool boundary catch from Clewett, Fletcher attacked the bowling from ball one. Smashing fours and sixes at will, he raced to fifty in just 34 balls. He took a particular liking to Judah whose seven overs went for 61. However he continued to lose partners at the other end as an array of poor shots saw wickets tumble with the rate at over eight an over. Harrison closed out his third spell to finish with 3/54 in nine overs and the 200 came up in the 42nd over. When James Osmond clean bowled Webster the Sheffield side still needs 22 to win with one wicket remaining but Fletcher continued to play his shots. Osmond made the brave call with three overs remaining to replace Judah with Bill Kirby for his first bowl of the season. And the decision paid off as his sixth ball found Fletcher’s edge and although Windeatt failed to grasp the chance standing up he was able to recover and stump Fletcher who had overbalanced much to Cleethorpes joy as the players celebrated wildly. Fletcher had hit 78 in just 47 balls. James Osmond finished with 3/38 in a vital eight overs to hand Cleethorpes a Semi-final away at Sandiacre on June 19th.

FIRST DEFEAT FOR MEGGIES

By Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes slipped to their first defeat of the Yorkshire league season when they went down by 63 runs to a strong Rotherham side at Clifton lane on Saturday. If James Osmond side can take any satisfaction from the defeat it is the battling qualities they showed in the chase that saw them at least collect a solitary point whilst denying Rotherham maximum points. Osmond had earlier won the toss and chose to bowl on a wicket that although green usually provided plenty of runs. As usual Andy Ellis and Jack Harrison opened the attack for Cleethorpes. After a quiet opening over from Ellis the game burst into life in the second over with Harrison conceding 18 runs. He was struck for three boundaries and also bowled four wides as he struggled with his line and was severely punished. Ellis however was to make the breakthrough in the next over as the dangerous Moorehouse played on to depart with the score on 20. Osmond persisted with Harrison and the decision was rewarded when Stuart Guy feathered through to the keeper to give the young paceman some reward. Sanderson was to follow suit 12 runs later in identical fashion and when Smith played a loose drive to Nathan Judah at mid off Ellis also claimed his second wicket. At 52-4 Rotherham were in deep trouble when the turning point of the match occurred. Lowe, who was yet to score appeared to be caught well back in his crease from a ball from Ellis that nipped back. To most people’s amazement the umpire disagreed and the batsman survived a vociferous appeal. Much to Cleethorpes’ annoyance he then went on to make a solid half century as he and opener Rudolph set about repairing the innings. South African Rudolph, brother of Ex-Yorkshire Batsman Jacques had been positive throughout and was first to reach fifty in 61 balls. The pair brought up the hundred stand in the 31st over as they looked to take the game away from Cleethorpes. After adding 109 and taking the score to 161, Lowe fell to Alex Osmond when he chipped tamely to brother James at cover for 50 in 56 balls. Osmond soon accounted for Randhawa to a simple return catch and when Plater fell lbw to the same bowler Rotherham’s mini slump saw them 182-7. Rudolph now took command and a number of huge blows down the ground off Clewett saw him reach his hundred in just 124 balls. He added 39 for the eighth wicket with Cooper (9) that took them well past the 200 run mark. Harrison returned to the attack to remove Cooper to a skied catch at mid on from James Osmond and Page went the next over to Harrison courtesy of a sharp catch at cover from Clewett. Rudolph completed his 150 in the final over with a brutal straight six off Harrison but the bowler had the last laugh taking a return catch to complete his first five wicket haul in the Yorkshire league. Only Rudolph and Lowe had reached double figures for Rotherham. Despite coming in for some punishment Harrison returned 5/73 in 12.1 overs. Alex Osmond had been the pick of the attack with 3/49 in 14 overs while Andy Ellis finished with 2/35 in ten overs.
Set a massive 256 for victory at four and a half an over, Cleethorpes needed to get off to A good start. With Yorkshire seamer Ben Sanderson showing lively pace, Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond set about the chase in cautious mood. Having reached 17 without loss Osmond fell to a ball that appeared to square him up off Sanderson and he edged behind for 12. Yaniv Judah (5) soon followed and when last weekend’s double century hero Kirby fell to Page for 12 in the twelfth over Cleethorpes were in real trouble at 34-3. Brothers James and Alex now had to rebuild and after seeing off the threat of Sanderson began to milk the attack. The hundred was brought up in the 29th over as the pair attempted to manoeuvre Cleethorpes into a winning position. James reached his first half century of the season two overs later in 84 balls and the hundred partnership came up in the 37th over. With 128 required from the final twenty overs with seven wickets in hand it was now game on. Alex had looked in commanding form and had reached 49 in 70 balls when he departed to a superb stumping from Lowe after Jackson found some turn outside off stump after enticing the batsman down. James (64) was to fall four runs later with the run rate steadily climbing. Attempting an ambitious sweep he top edged to square leg as hope for Meggies began to ebb away. James Windeatt (2) and Charlie Tomlinson (3) fell in quick succession in the vain chase for runs and when Harrison and Judah departed for ducks Cleethorpes had collapsed to 177-9 with nine overs left. Harry Clewett (29 not out) and Andy Ellis (2 not out) deserve great credit for seeing out the overs to pick up a point for Cleethorpes and deny Rotherham. Randhawa picked up 5/37 for Rotherham as Cleethorpes closed at 192-9 some 63 runs short of Rotherham but retain second place in the Yorkshire league.

83 AND 8 WICKETS FOR STAR MAN RAM

By Glen Sands

It was cup Sunday in the North Lindsey Cricket League and there were several outstanding achievements in all Three competitions.

DIVISION ONE KO CUP 1ST ROUND
Ramesh Chand had a terrific game for Scunthorpe 4ths when they took on Cleethorpes 5ths at Heslam Park when hitting 83 in a total of 213 for 5 aided by Tom Brumby who added 54 then Chand took 8 for 17 as the visitors were bowled out for 39 , the result earning Scunthorpe a trip to App Frodingham 3rds in the Semi Finals on July 31st. Kieran Lindley hit an unbeaten 95 and Donovan Deeble 80 when Messingham 3rds posted a total of 240 for 7 against Barton Academy Vikings , Gary Bell picking up 3 for 46 for the Humbersiders who in reply made 183 for 7 , Reece Ogle top scoring with 38 as Sheldon Sekul took 3 for 35 for Messingham and they will meet Grimsby Town 3rds in the Semis who gained a comfortable nine wicket win at Caistor Cougars , the Cougars scoring 154 for 8 thanks chiefly to Andrew Pearson's 40 and Liam Wood's 31 before Goerge Linde guided Grimsby home with 77 not out along with Brendan Volley who finished unbeaten on 37.

DIVISION TWO KO CUP 1ST ROUND
Holders Outcasts fell at the first hurdle this season when they lost by 10 runs to neighbours Haxey in a game which was dominated by Haxey youngster Joe Scott who hit 106 not out in Haxey's total of 166 all out then he took 4 for 47 as Outcasts were bowled out for 156 , Jamie Belton making 69 for the Priorymen and that earns Haxey a home draw against Hibaldstow 2nds in the Semi Finals on July 31st. Jon Loates scored 74 and Will Savill 65 as Wheatley & Leverton hit 294 for 7 against Barton Town 4ths and Savill also pitched in with the ball , taking 3 for 28 as Barton were bowled out for 159 , Tom Palin hitting 49 and Andy Genney 37 not out which means Wheatley will now meet Broughton 3rds in the other Semi Final as they saw off Alkborough 3rds by 119 runs , Nick Dobbs scoring an exceptional 109 not out when Broughton set a target of 249 for 8 which Alkborough fell well short of.

DIVISION THREE KO CUP 1ST ROUND
Cup holders Upton cum Kexby made it through to the Semi Finals with a comfortable victory over Bottesford, Hayden Green scoring 72 not out and Shaun Metcalf 45 for Upton who made 201 for 5 when batting first , W Khan taking 3 for 52 but despite 34 from both Farrell and Andy Sharp Bottesford could only manage 133 in reply with Andy Orton picking up 4 for 26 for the holders. Beaten Finalists Luddington set a score of 187 for 7 at home to Broughton 4ths with 40 from Graham Clark and 34 from brother Darren but Broughton reached that target with an over to spare with 52 from Neil Simpson , 47 not out from Jake Parker and 43 from Craig Hall in what was a deserved victory for Tom Brock's team who will play hosts to Upton on August 14th in the Semi Finals. Misterton 2nds made short work of Normanby Park who were skittled out for 21 , Darren Emmingham taking 4 for 2 before Tim Sharpe blasted 18 not out in their reply of 22 for 0 whilst Everton 3rds beat Isleonians by 6 wickets in the other 1st Round tie , Robert Hunter Shaw scoring a half century for the villagers and therefore setting up a Semi Final clash with neighbouring Misterton 2nds.

IS ARRAN'S CENTURY FEMALE FIRST?

By Ann Boulton

Louth provided the main highlights of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League weekend with a century from Arran Brindle – believed to be the first by a female player in any ECB Premier League – and a run-fest that saw 598 scored and only 13 wickets taken.
But the most unusual occurrence was at Woodhall Spa, where Bracebridge Heath made 350 for four, Paul Cook with an unbeaten 122 off 69 balls and three other batsmen with half centuries. Four Bracebridge bowlers – Brett Houston, Tom Cuthbert, Mark Fell and Karanjit Bansal - then each took a wicket with their first ball while Jonathan Darke took a wicket on the first ball of his second bowling spell.
Woodhall then hung on to their final wicket to finish 136 for nine but Bracebridge nevertheless extended their lead at the top of the table to nine points after Market Deeping’s valiant pursuit of Louth’s 335 for six, in which Brindle hit 128, ended on 263 for seven, David Gillett with an unbeaten 76.
Brindle’s team mate Nuwan Shiroman topped the 300 mark for the season with 53 while elsewhere the day brought two more centuries – Jim Morgan’s 113 for Grimsby and 102 for Phil Sneath at Sleaford.
Grimsby moved into third after a six wicket victory over Nettleham who were bowled out for 198, Morgan and Antcliffe (60) putting on 180 for the first wicket, while Bourne slipped to fourth after Skegness finally found some batting form to record a seven wicket win, Peter Houghton enjoying another good innings with 79.
A low scoring game at Boston saw the home side bowled out by Lindum for 154. But in Boston’s reply, Elliot Wilson bowled an inspired 13 overs to take six for 26 and help bowl Lindum out for only 76.
Sleaford moved off the bottom of the table, picking up 15 points despite failing to bowl Hartsholme out. Sneath’s century helped his side to 271 for eight but Matthew Wooldridge’s 74 kept his side in the game and the visitors finished on 207 for seven.

SOUTH LINCS AND BORDER LATEST

By Ann Boulton

Grantham’s victory over Sleaford 2nds opened up a gap at the top of South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One.
Grantham are now second, just two points behind Billingborough while Sleaford are 12 points adrift in third and are being threatened by Belton Park, who trail them by one point.
Martin Parmley hit 80 in Grantham’s eight wicket victory while Dave Newman took his runs total for the season to 315 with an innings of 126 as Billingborough overcame bottom team Bourne, David Gollop taking six wickets for the leaders.
Belton Park were involved in a much closer game against Boston 2nd, winning by 14 runs and Stamford got their campaign back on track with victory over Lindum Ramblers.
Ryan Bainborough had a good day behind the stumps for Market Deeping, taking four catches and a stumping in his side’s four wicket win over Spalding but six wickets for Steve Hughes couldn’t prevent Woodhall Spa going down to defeat by Moulton Harrox.
In Division Two, Skegness continue to dominate the table with Welby in second. However, Cavaliers and Billingborough 2nd, both with games in hand, are breathing down Welby’s neck after beating Thomas Cook and Heckington respectively.
Ian Glendenning’s unbeaten 85 rescued Heckington after Cavaliers’ bowlers had reduced them to 45 for five. Heckington were finally bowled out for 196 in 36 overs, Dave Robinson taking six wickets for Cavaliers who were glad of the extra overs, finally claiming victory by four wickets in the 49th over of their innings.
North Luffenham moved to the top of Division Three with a nine wicket win over Grantham 2nd and Spalding 3rd and Claypole also went ahead of former leaders Baston who were without a game. Claypole overcame Spalding in a high scoring match but remain three points behind their opponents.

URGENT FOR ALL HOMES TEAMS IN MARSHALL AND WELTON KOs

MAY 21 - ENTERING CUP-TIE SCORECARDS - LINCS LEAGUE

ATTENTION ALL HOME CLUBS IN MARSHALL AND WELTON COMPETITIONS

MICK DEVEREUX, HORNCASTLE, HAS HELPFULLY LEFT A MESSAGE ON MY MACHINE TONIGHT TO SAY THAT HE CAN'T SEE ALL HIS REGISTERED PLAYERS WHEN ENTERING A CUP-TIE SCORECARD. SOME ARE THERE, BUT NOT ALL.

Here's the quick and speedy reply/fix from the Helpdesk at the ECB

Nigel,

Cup competitions are not currently under LRP control; therefore the players visible are those in the team squads. If they can't see a player, then use the 'Pick Player from Database' link above the squad and search for them there.

TOTAL CRICKET SCORER

Those cricket fans, freelance/team scorers and Lincolnshire clubs interested in scoring online might like to download a free trial copy of Total Cricket Scorer, which looks an interesting package. "As used at Lord's" it says on the publicity material. "As used at Chichester Road" may also apply, as Cleethorpes CC appears on the Total Cricket Scorer list of clubs (sub-section Lincolnshire). Here's a link TOTAL CRICKET SCORER in you want the trial download.

SALLY IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Lincolnshire umpire Sally Newton features in an interesting article in the May issue of the Association of Cricket Officials' Newsletter - a prestigious publication distributed to umpires and scorers all round the country.
Below we offer a link so you can download your own copy, including Sally's article. There's always plenty of topical information in the publication, which is edited by Pierre Tartari.
Further to Lincolnshire League clubs being told at their last meeting about the ECB's progress towards having competent and qualified scorers at games, we will refer you to the piece on page 21, which explains a rule change brought in by the Derbyshire County Cricket League. In that competition it's now 3pts deducted in divisions 1, 2 and 3 if a team doesn't provide a competent scorer (and a player CANNOT undertake such duties!).
There's also a fascinating piece about the Bradford League, where an 82-yer-old has adapted to using laptops for online scoring at games. These are now commonplace in the competition.

If you are thinking of taking up umpiring, perhaps at the end of this season, this magazine is well worth reading. Training courses will run during the close season. If you wish to find out further information, post a comment here, with your email address, stating where you live, and I'll get back to you with contact details for your nearest association. We always need more umpires!

OUR CHICKENS COME HOME TO ROOST!

Technical gremlins within the websites' domain which kindly hosts Lincs Cricket Latest meant the boffins had to restore things to a previous date and we lost a day's postings. This would normally present no issues but, sadly, we had not kept a copy of our piece about about the chicken which regularly pops along to watch Alkborough Cricket Club in action at West Halton Lane. The story contained many puns about plucky performances, egg-citing cricket and poultry team totals. We also mentioned how Alkborough's 2nd X1 captain had been a spectator at a recent Sunday match...Chicken and Chippies?
Perhaps you read the orginal before the system crash; if not, this will have to suffice.

PS: "About about" is no mistake in the story. It's been put there on purpose for all fans of cartoon legend Foghorn Leghorn, whose distinctive way of speaking - I say, way of speaking - was later taken up so successfully by the big butcher on Coronation Street. If they are looking for a name for Alkborough's chicken, then "Fred" would seem ideal. Though the 2nd X1's veteran keeper/batsman may have other ideas.

HIGH-TECH AT HAXEY

Many of us will remember our amazement, some years ago, when first encountering the electronic scoreboard at Haxey's ground. Well, things have moved on now, and the villagers have kept pace with technology. There's even a flashing light with which the scorers can acknowledge umpires' signals.

LUDD OPEN THEIR ACCOUNT

By Glen Sands

Luddington were made to battle hard for their first win of the 2011 season by a valiant Hensall side last Thursday in the Snaith and District Evening League, the Isle side squeezing home by 4 wickets with three overs to go.
Hensall won the toss and chose to bat first and quickly found themselves one down when opener Barker was caught by Darren Clark behind the stumps off Jonathan Wroot with the total on just seven. Geoff Thornton was next to go caught smartly at slip by home skipper Andy Lawson for two , again off the bowling of Wroot and things got even worse for the visitors when Tom Wright was caught by Darren Clark off Scott Buttrick for one leaving them struggling on 14 for 3. Opener Ian Calvert and his son James then pieced together a spledid partnership , albeit a rather slow scoring rate , taking the score to 51 before Ian was run out for 31 via a direct hit from Graham Clark and Liam Waterworth hit a solitary boundary before he was fifth out superbly caught on the run by Graham Clark to earn Graeme Fletcher a deserved wicket. Gareth Parkin ran James Robinson out without him having troubled the scorers then James Calvert was became Darren Clark's third victim having made 23 , this time the catch giving brother Graham a wicket. The innings ended on 74 for 7 with all the Luddington bowlers contributing well.
On the face of it a total of 75 from 18 overs should have been comfortable for Luddington to chase down but to their credit Hensall bowled and fielded exceptionally well with one glaring exception. Jamie Belton held the home sides innings together with an unbeaten 41 but had a touch of fortune when being dropped early in his time at the crease which proved to be a bad miss for the visitors. Darren Clark had reached ten when he was caught by Matt Wright off Tom Wright then brother Graham was bowled by Wright for four leaving Ludd on 36 for 2. Russell Fletcher ( 3 ) and Andy Lawson ( 4 ) went in the same Matt Wright over as Luddington wobbled and when Scott Buttrick was caught by Robinson off James Calvert for five they were still eleven runs shy of their target. Danny Taylor cracked one terrific boundary before being bowled by young Calvert but Jamie Belton stood firm to hit the winning runs in the fifteenth over , earning Luddington their first three points haul of the season
So Luddington will travel to Goole on Thursday happy to have picked up their first win whilst Hensall can certainly take lots of positives from their performance despite hteir loss. They have a crop of very promising youngsters who will undoubtedly serve them well in the future.

DOUBLE HEADER FOR MEGGIES

By Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes 1st X1 face a tough double header this weekend when they travel to Rotherham on Saturday before entertaining Whitely Hall, the South Yorkshire Champions, in the National Knockout Cup at Chichester Road on Sunday (1pm Start). Both Cleethorpes 2nd and 3rd X1 sides are in cup action on Saturday. The 2nds entertain local rivals Holton le Clay in the George Marshall Trophy (1.30pm Start) while the 3rds attempt to make the Bob Welton Cup final for the fourth year on the bounce when they face a trip to Haxey 2nds in the first round.
Cleethorpes North Lindsey X1 travel to Scunthorpe on Sunday in the Division One Cup while the Academy X1 travel to Keelby in the East Lindsey league.

Cleethorpes Cricket Club enjoyed another excellent weekend completing five comprehensive wins over the two days. Cleethorpes 1st X1 led the way with convincing wins in league and cup over Doncaster and Castleford respectively. On Saturday they entertained lowly Doncaster and despite failing to put off an outright win, still claimed six points to maintain their challenge for the league in consolidating second position. Once again James Osmond won an important toss and his opening attack of Andy Ellis and Jack Harrison soon had Doncaster in trouble reducing them to 34-3. A spirited stand of 76 for the fourth wicket held Cleethorpes up as their spinners struggled to make an impact. The vital breakthrough came from Nathan Judah who claimed two wickets in quick succession and when Charlie Tomlinson’s direct throw accounted for another the Doncaster innings looked like folding quickly. However Doncaster’s lower order battled on led by Skipper Morley’s valiant 43 as they limped to 194-9 at the close of their 55 overs. Any fears that Cleethorpes may struggle were soon dispelled as Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond got off to a great start. Smart running coupled with the occasional boundary saw the fifty brought up in the 15th over with Osmond first to his half century in 86 balls. Kirby (69 balls) followed suit and the hundred was passed in the 26th over. Doncaster were now offering little threat and it came as a surprise when Osmond was bowled to a delivery that kept a little low with the score on 178. His 83 had come in 136 balls and included 8 fours and a towering six. Kirby then eased Cleethorpes home in the 44th over but not before completing an assured tenth Yorkshire league century for Cleethorpes.

Sunday Yorkshire league Cup trip to Castleford was reduced to 35 overs a side due to the constant drizzle. When play finally got underway, Castleford batted first and in atrocious bowling conditions posted an aggressive 218-7. All Cleethorpes bowlers struggled to grip the ball with James Osmond being the most successful with 2/39 in seven overs. Five other Cleethorpes bowlers took wickets but all suffered as they struggled to contain. Cleethorpes reply got off to a solid start with the recalled Eddie Carlton (20) and Kirby adding 52 inside 8 overs. A flurry of wickets saw Meggies reduced to 80-3 before Alex Osmond and Kirby took the game away from Castleford with a majestic stand of 137 for the fourth wicket to swing the game Cleethorpes’ way. Osmond hit an unbeaten 57 in just 48 balls but the star performer once again was Bill Kirby who cracked his second ton of the weekend with a magnificent 106 in 98 balls. Bringing up his ton with a straight six, Kirby departed with just two runs required attempting to finish the game. The victory hands Cleethorpes Quarter Final tie at Appleby Frodingham on June 12th.

Paul Sunley’s 2nd X1 maintained their challenge for the Lincs Premier league with an excellent 22-run win over high flying Barton on Sunday. A unbroken tenth wicket stand of 46 proved pivotal in taking Cleethorpes to maximum batting points after slumping to 156-9 at one stage. Callum Robinson (38), Patrick Hughes (37) and Chris Wragg (28) made strong contributions while Peter Thompson (31 not out) and John Zielinski (14 not out) played the key roles in the last wicket stand. Fred Lumby then made two early breakthroughs in the Barton reply but for long periods the game looked in the balance. It was only Thompson’s second spell that swung the game Cleethorpes way as three late wickets saw Barton dismissed for 180, 28 runs short of victory. Thompson finished with 5/71 in 16 overs after ealier suffering from a number of dropped catches. Lumby returned excellent figures of 3/34 in 12 overs while Zielinski recorded 2/35 off 8 overs in his first outing of the season.

Cleethorpes 4ths wasted little time in wrapping up an eight wicket home win over Old Lincolnians at the Stamford Club on Saturday. The bowled their opponents out for just 54 in 20 overs with Ian Mansfiled claiming a brilliant 5/8 in six overs. Kris Hall (2/8 in 4) and Andy Severn (2/7 in 5) also inflicted heavy damage. George Carlton (17 not out) lead Cleethorpes home in just 11.2 overs to hand Kevin Blewitt’s side maximum points.

Cleethorpes Academy completed a clean sweep for Cleethorpes with a 94-run win over Hainton at the Stamford Club on Sunday. John Mansfield’s first hundred saw Cleethorpes post a mammoth 266-7 in their 40 overs. Brother David (37) and Ian (37) also joined in the run fest with Skipper Lewis Markham chipping in with 35. In reply Hainton could only muster 172 all out before being bowled out in the 30th over. Kris Hall was the pick of the Cleethorpes attack with 2/16 in five overs while Reece Holberry and Markham also picked up two wickets.

LINCS CRICKET LATEST LINCS LEAGUE TABLE

The Lincolnshire County Cricket League has switched over to recording its scores online this season, with tables also being generated by the ECB software. However, the official "set" is still being compiled at league level and emailed to clubs on Sunday morning (which is quicker, given the timescale for teams registering results over the weekend). The manually-created tables are being compared with those online (where the clubs add their own points). This week slight difference has just been spotted between the two sets of tables in the premier division, so here's the adjusted, correct version:

WAITING IN THE WINGS

By Ann Boulton

The foot of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League table could provide the weekend’s tightest game as bottom team Sleaford entertain Hartsholme, who are two places above them.
Both sides will be without their captains, Oliver Burford recovering from appendicitis and Hartsholme skipper Nathan Poundall getting mobile again after a serious knee injury. Despite their lowly position, Sleaford have been involved in some close games while their opponents are showing a real improvement on last season.
Sleaford are 16 points behind Hartsholme but only seven adrift of Nettleham who are away at Grimsby where George Linde will be waiting with the aim of adding to the 15 wickets he has already taken this season. Dan Wright is coming good with the bat for Nettleham but the visitors lack a penetrating attack and Grimsby’s strong batting line-up could take full advantage.
Skegness face an even more prolific bowler when they visit Bourne, for whom Fahad Masood already has 21 wickets in the bag. Despite some new faces in the team, the season has yet to take off for the seasiders, though Peter Houghton’s century last week bodes well for future games.
Lindum, deposed from the top spot last weekend, are away at Boston who will be looking to defend their mid-table position while new leaders Bracebridge Heath visit Woodhall Spa, another team not yet firing on all cylinders. However, a win for Woodhall would push them into the top half of the table while should Bracebridge slip up, Market Deeping are waiting in the wings to take over at the top.
Deeping, who are just one point behind in second place, visit Louth who lie sixth but are only seven points off fourth place.
Games start at 12.30.

CLEETHORPES DEMOLISH 'DONNY'

FROM GRAHAM HACKNEY

Cleethorpes 1st X1 comfortably maintained their unbeaten start to the Yorkshire ECB Premier campaign with an easy nine-wicket demolition of Doncaster at Chichester Road on Saturday. After winning the toss, James Osmond had no hesitation in asking Doncaster to bat in damp conditions after the overnight rain. Once again Cleethorpes opening bowlers were to make early inroads into the Doncaster batting. Jack Harrison struck first in only the fourth over bowling Odell with a sharp delivery. After Rory Osmond spilled a sharp chance at square leg off Harrison, it was Ellis who was to follow this up with the wicket of Kundra courtesy of a superb diving catch by Yaniv Judah at mid-on with the score on 26. Stuart soon followed when he inexplicably left an Ellis delivery that promptly knocked over his off stump. At 34-3 in the 14th over, Doncaster looked in real trouble but they were indebted to 76-run fourth wicket stand as Cleethorpes change bowlers struggled with their line and length. Spinners Alex Osmond and Harry Clewett both looked out of touch as Doncaster’s batsman milked them for 50 runs over twelve overs. After Alex Gosney passed a bright and breezy 50 in just 61 balls he fell to Nathan Judah’s second over as the seamer induced a loose drive that Clewett snapped up at cover. Watson fell in exactly the same manner to Judah four overs later and Khan soon followed to Rory Osmond’s smart fielding that saw a direct hit leave the batsman well short. Opener Cox became the second Doncaster player to reach his half century that had taken a marathon 110 deliveries. He fell with the score on 144 to what turned out to be James Osmond’s last delivery trying to up the run rate but only skying to brother Alex at long on. Doncaster skipper Morley added 40 for the eighth wicket and had made 43 in 42 balls when the returning Harrison had him taken at midwicket by Tomlinson to a ball that was quickly onto him. Cleethorpes sensed the opportunity to bowl Doncaster out and when Sykes also skied to Kirby two balls later Doncaster had slipped to 185-9. The last pair however were able to negotiate the final ten deliveries to scramble to 194-9 and leave Cleethorpes what looked a testing target. Harrison had been the pick of the attack with 3/40 in ten overs while Judah had given good support to pick up 2/29 in eight overs. The reliable Ellis weighed in with 2/42 in 15 overs.
With a heavy shower delaying the players return, openers Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond soon set about compiling the runs. Excellent running between the pair meant the strike rotating and they soon began to flourish. With Doncaster’s attack hampered by the loss of Stuart to injury they brought up the 50 in the 15th over with little discomfort. Osmond became the first to reach his half century in 86 balls that had seen him stroke four 4’s and a massive six. With the hundred stand coming up in the 26th over, the pair were racing to victory. Doncaster’s spinners were proving little threat as Kirby reached his fifty in 69 balls that had featured five fours and a six. Both batsmen looked in confident mood against a dejected attack and the 150 came and went in the 32nd over. Having reached 83 then it came as a great surprise when Doncaster Skipper Morley bowled Osmond with a delivery that kept a little low. His 136 ball innings included 8 fours and a six for a stand of 178 for the opening wicket. Kirby reached his tenth Yorkshire league hundred for Cleethorpes with his thirteenth boundary in only 117 balls and two balls later he completed the victory for Meggies to hand them six points to consolidate second position in the Yorkshire league table.

BILL'S TON KEEPS CLEE ON TRACK

Bill Kirby on his way to a ton against Castleford.

PICTURES AND REPORT FROM GRAHAM HACKNEY

Cleethorpes 1st X1 continued their fantastic start to the season with a measured six-wicket win at Castleford in the opening round of the Yorkshire league cup. In atrocious conditions Castleford opted to bat first when play finally got under in a match that was reduced to 35 overs a side. Constant drizzle had delayed the start and sensible umpiring throughout enabled the match to reach a conclusion with Cleethorpes earning the right to travel to Appleby Frodingham on June 12th for a Quarter final tie. Castleford started their innings in positive mode with Skipper James Osmond and Jack Harrison opening the attack for Meggies. Castleford Overseas Clarke soon had the scoreboard ticking with boundaries off Harrison but the Cleethorpes bowler would soon make the first breakthrough as Le Roux slashed to Tomlinson at point with the score on 16. Clarke and Pickering would then add 60 for the second wicket as conditions deteriorated with the bowlers struggling to grip the ball. Osmond at least managed a tight opening spell conceding just 16 runs from his four overs. Limited to just seven overs apiece, the skipper chose to rotate his attack that included three spinners. It was Harry Clewett that broke the stand with Harrison taking a great running catch at deep square leg. Pickering then went into overdrive as he took to the Cleethorpes attack. With short boundaries straight at both ends he launched three massive sixes to go with his nine boundaries to smash 88 in just 70 balls. He had one lucky escape when Alex Osmond took a leaping one-handed catch at long on but unfortunately landed over the boundary line. Stauart Harvey removed Hopkinson (4) to a leading edge off his first delivery but another stand of 65 for the fourth wicket looked like taking the game away from Cleethorpes. Finally Pickering holed out to Kirby off the bowling of Alex Osmond and Cleethorpes looked like keeping the score below 200 before a late flourish from Wragg (27 not out) took the final total to a challenging 218-7. All Cleethorpes bowlers came in for some hammer with James Osmond the most successful with 2/39 in his seven although Yaniv Judah bowled a useful containing spell at the death to record 1/26 in five overs.
Clearly Cleethorpes had to get off to a bright start and this they did with recalled Eddie Carlton (20) and Kirby adding 50 in under seven overs with some smart running as well as dispatching anything loose to the boundary. Carlton had hit four boundaries when he chased a wide delivery from Le Roux and Clarke took the catch at cover. Yaniv Judah (3) soon followed as he was undone by a slower delivery to leave Cleethorpes 57-2. Castleford were now making the most of better bowling conditions as the run rate dipped under the required target. James Osmond added 18 before falling to a stunning one handed catch at cover of a full blooded drive from Hopkinson. Kirby though was looking untroubled and passed his fifty in just 43 balls in the 18th over. After his century against Doncaster the day before and was looking in tremendous touch. Alex Osmond came in and the pair soon kick started the innings as Castleford’s young change bowlers struggled to contain. With the field starting to spread they were able to milk the singles as well as take the boundaries as any pressure soon evaporated. After passing the 50 partnership in 38 balls the pair raced to a hundred stand in 88 as Castleford wilted. Osmond reached his half century in 40 balls in the 30th over with the 200 coming up the over later. Kirby completed his second century of a great weekend with a massive straight six to take them within touching distance of victory. His ton had taken 95 balls and included 8 fours and 3 sixes. With just two required though he departed for 106 attempting to finish the game and skied to Le Roux at long off. Osmond dually completed the win three balls later to remain 57 not out (48 balls). Kirby and Osmond had added 137 for the fourth wicket as Cleethorpes raced home with eleven balls to spare.

A boundary from Alex Osmond.

Bill is congratulted on reaching his century.

GREAT SPORTING GESTURE

By Matt Dobson, Cherry Willingham 2nds

Last Saturday, Cherry 2nds made the short trip to Washingborough in what had been described in the local press as a Lincs League Division 3 local derby.
Many of the players from either side knew each other and have faced each other on the cricket field on many occasions.
Cherry were asked to bat first and I opened. It was extremely windy and difficult for umpires or captains to be heard, either to confirm a guard or amending the field.
Ben Jackson sent down a delivery which I tried to drop defensively on the leg side but only succeeded in inside edging. Ben appealed for LBW, having not heard the edge, and the umpire, who had also not picked up the nick, raised the finger of death.
I commenced a slow, disappointed trudge towards the pavilion and was 10 yards from the square when home skipper Kenny Coyle called me back.
It was a really sporting gesture and one which was much appreciated. Unsurprisingly I was out shortly after so there was no damage done!

MITCH STARS IN THRILLER

By Glen Sands
It was a chilly weekend for cricket but that didn't deter many excellent performances in the North Lindsey League which saw nine matches played across all three divisions.

DIVISION ONE
Messingham 3rds have won both of their opening fixtures, the latest coming via a 22 runs margin against Caistor Cougars. Messingham were in a spot of trouble on 78 for 6 before New Zealander Donovan Deeble took command of their innings , making 87 as they went on to register a total of 179 all out , Joe Smith taking 4 for 51 and Tom Boryszczuk 4 for 53 for the Cougars but they were bowled out for 157 despite an excellent contribution of 54 from Pearson , Kieran Lindley picking up 3 for 17 for early leaders Messingham. The other Division One match saw Grimsby Town 3rds gain their first points of the season when beating Scunthorpe 4ths by 57 runs , George Linde hitting 48 and Connor Hawkins 43 in the Grimsby total of 170 all out , Joe Colebeck taking 4 for 21 and Ramesh Chand 4 for 75 and it was Chand who contributed most with the bat for Scunthorpe , making 50 in their all out total of 113 , Hawkins chipping in with 4 for 14 to earn Grimsby their victory.

DIVISION TWO
Alkborough 3rds skipper Paul Mitchell is having the season of his life so far with the bat and he once again starred with the willow as his side won a thriller at Wheatley & Leverton. The Gainsborough outfit posted a total of 204 all out thanks largely to young skipper Jonathan Loates who hit 69 and Callum Harrison who made 36 , Liam Hebblewhite taking 4 for 56 for Alkborough but Mitch saw his side home in the very last over with an unbeaten 82 aided by 31 valuable runs from stalwart Chippy Clay , Alkborough winning by just two wickets to claim joint top spot in the league table. They share the top spot with Outcasts 3rds who beat Isle neighbours Haxey 3rds by 19 runs and they had the day's only centurian in the guise of Jamie Belton who hit 102 as the Priorymen made 201 for 8 , Jon Stanser picking up 5 for 68 for Haxey and he also hit 59 as they replied with 182 for 7 , falling 19 runs short of their opponents target. Hibaldstow 2nds gained their first win of the new season when they bowled Broughton 3rds out for 91 , Josh Cowling taking 5 for 15 and Peter Taylor 5 for 45 , but they were made to battle for the points as Broughton took seven Hibaldstow wickets before their score was overhauled.

DIVISION THREE
Everton 3rds are the early pace setters in Division Three and they achieved an excellent 13 runs victory at nearby Misterton 2nds with only nine men ! Batting first they made 120 all out thanks chiefly to man of the match G Rehmen's 35 not out , home skipper Darren Emmingham taking 3 for 40 for Misterton who were then bowled out for 107 with that man Rehmen taking 5 for 27 , R Taylor top scoring for Misterton with 30. Upton cum Kexby opened their account for the season by beating Bottesford by 85 runs , Hayden Green hitting 53 in an all out total of 196 with Watkins taking 6 for 57 for Dave Willey's men who replied with 111 all out , M Khan top scoring with 36 not out. New boys Normanby Park entertained the newly named Isleonians who posted a target of 181 for 5 thanks to 44 from Rick Green and 31 from Strawbridge and despite some excellent late order resistance from youngster Alex Czabaniuk who made 30 not out and 28 from the more senior Mark Knapton they fell 25 runs short , Carroll taking an impressive 4 for 61 for the Isle side and the final game saw another Isle side gain their first victory of the season when Luddington emphatically defeated Broughton 4ths by 94 runs. Andy Lawson top scored with 43 when Ludd posted a score of 141 all out , Tom Brock taking 5 for 18 and Jack Siddall 4 for 19 but Paul Reed's 18 was the only real resistance offered in an all out total of 47 as Graham Clark picked up 5 for 27 and Matthew Mellers 4 for 19.

JIMMY SHOWS BOYCOTT CLASS

By Glen Sands

North Lindsey Leaguers Luddington bounced back from an opening day defeat to Everton when beating Broughton 4ths by a comprehensive 94 runs yesterday in what were far from ideal cricketing conditions with a chill wind and the occasional flurry of rain sweeping across the Park Lane ground.
Luddington were invited to bat first with brothers Graham and Darren Clark opening their innings and they made a brisk start before Graham was bowled by Jack Siddall for 19 with the total on 41. Darren went the same way for 22 with the total at 50 thenDanny Taylor was caught by Craig Hall off Tom Reed for four and Ludd were standing at 76 for 3. Andy Lawson struck two towering sixes, one of which went within a whisker of team mate Barry O'Brien's car, but as well as he was playing he was seeing partners coming and going at the other end as Broughton kept plugging away gamely. Visiting skipper Tom Brock brought himself on to bowl and made in roads into the Luddington batting order including the prized scalp of the in form Lawson who was bowled for 43 with the overall total on 111 but the lower order each added valuable runs as Ludd reached 141 all out , Steve Proctor hitting eight , Arron Curry and Matthew Mellers four apiece and Jimmy Roe ending the innings six not out including a quite majestic square cut for four that Boycott would have been proud of. Brock finished with 5 for 18 and Jack Siddall 4 for 19 for the relatively young Broughton side.
After a splendid tea, Broughton set about the task of chasing down the Luddington total but were quickly in trouble asopener McIntyre was bowled by Graham Clark with just two runs to his name. Matthew Mellers then struck with two wickets of his own leaving Broughton reeling on 8 for 3 which soon became 9 for 4 when Clark had Siddall caught by wicket keeper Steve Proctor without him troubling the scorers. Paul Reed did offer some resistance with a bright and breezy 18 before he dragged on a Mellerds delivery and once again it sparked a collapse as Graham Clark proceeded to have Craig Hall caught by his brother Darren for two then he bowled Scott Benson to make the score 28 for 7. Tom Brock (six) and Tom Reed (twelve not out) did offer some late resistence but the match drew to a close with a run out, leaving Broughton all out for 47. Graham Clark ended with figures of 5 for 27 and Matthew Mellers 4 for 19 as Luddington claimed their first three points of the 2011 campaign.
After the match everyone retired to the River Don who kindly provided both sides with some nourishment and left them all to ponder on the likely outcome when they lock horns again at Luddington in the Divisional Cup for a place in the Semi Finals. One thing is for sure, they will all hope for much warmer weather in which to play!

SLEAFORD SECOND TO NO-ONE

By Ann Boulton

After four matches, just four points separate the top three in South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One. Sleaford 2nd head the list, two in front of Billingborough with Grantham a further two points adrift after all three recorded victories over the weekend.
Sleaford beat Market Deeping by 87 runs while Billingborough fought out a tighter game against Woodhall Spa 2nd who were set a target of 225 but finished on 192 for nine. And Grantham just failed to bowl bottom side Bourne 2nd out but collected 17 points from their four wicket win.
Spalding put an end to Belton Park’s good start to the season and Lindum Ramblers put their bad run behind them with a win over Boston 3rd, Will Wright hitting the division’s top score of the day with 74.
Skegness 2nd lead Division Two but only 11 points separate the next five teams. Welby lie second despite going down to a real nailbiter against fourth placed Cavaliers who lost nine wickets chasing a modest total of 117.
In contrast, Heckington devasted Billingborough 2nd whose pursuit of their visitors’ 205 for seven ended on just 39, Joe Braithwaite taking five for 20 off nine overs and Sam Elliott four for 19 off 10.
Thomas Cook moved up to third after beating Boston 3rd who suffered a second defeat on Sunday against Sleaford for whom Gavin Hutson hit the weekend’s only century.
In Division Three, it was an early finish at Claypole after Scott Barnsdale’s six for 21 off nine overs helped bowl Grantham 2nd out for 66, a total Claypole knocked off without loss.
North Luffenham won the battle at the top of the table despite being bowled out for 105 by Baston who were then all out for 86 but remain two points clear of their opponents. Timberland moved into third after beating Burgh & District and on Sunday, Spalding 3rd got the better of Moulton Harrox.
