LUDD BEAT LEADERS

By Glen Sands

Luddington kept their hopes of repeating last season's title victory when beating Snaith Evening League division one leaders Fishlake by four wickets in a low-scoring match on the Isle on Thursday.
Fishlake chose to bat first but quickly found themselves one down when spin king Anthony Fitzgerald had in form opener Josh Mason caught at backward square by Jamie Belton having scored just one with the total on eleven and he was followed by Kev Pearson , caught and bowled by Fitzgerald , he too having made just a single. The impressive Fitzgerald picked up a third wicket when Matt Mason was caught by Andy Lawson for three with the overall score standing at 31 then Scott Buttrick clean bowled Wallbank with the total on 36. Alex Fletcher produced an excellent piece of fielding to run out danger man Richard Copley for five and at 46 for 5 things were looking grim for the visitors. Opener Alderson had watched from the other end as the wickets tumbled but he was standing firm , accumulating runs with an array of shots and along with number seven batsman Shelton they moved the score up to 63 before Buttrick produced a terrific yorker to remove Shelton for nine. Peter Tait then took centre stage , picking up three for six in just two overs including an impressive caught and bowled effort that saw Alderson out for 46 valuable runs and Graeme Fletcher then wrapped up the innings when he had Ryan Pearson caught by Darren Clark for two , leaving Fishlake on a mediocre 74 all out.
Darren Clark suffered a first ball duck when being caught and bowled by Matt Mason with the score on just three then Jamie Belton and Oliver Coulman took the total to 23 before Belton was caught off the bowling of Josh Mason for eight. Coulman looked untroubled as he confidently struck the ball to the boundary whilst Peter Tait assisted with nine then he was third out , caught by Matt Mason off Ken Round and when skipper Andy Lawson was run out following some excellent fielding from Richard Cropley Ludd were stuttering at 58 for 4. Scott Buttrick was then adjudged caught behind by Shelton off Round without scoring and it became even more nervy for the Isle side when Coulman was caught by Alderson off Kev Pearson for an excellent 40. At 61 for 6 it needed someone to step up to the plate and sure enough Anthony Fitzgerald and Charlie Mason did just that for Luddington guiding them to victory in the 17th over and three valuable points , Fitzgerald making six not out and Mason seven moving them to within two points of Fishlake in the table now with just two games remaining.
The battle for the title is most certainly still on.

Division Two
Hirst Courtney are making a dash for the title and they certainly made their intentions clear when scoring an amazing 195 for 0 at Sturgethorpe , B Howard hitting 97 not out and P Alford 90 and wickets were in short supply when Sturgethorpe replied , Hirst picking up just one as the hosts reached 124 for 1 , Shafta scoring 65 and Watson 51 not out. Hensall v Goole Firemen was cancelled due to Hensall having to play catch up on their fixtures elsewhere whilst finally in Division Two David Hoe hit 36 for Carlton Towers who leapfrogged Howden Town at the foot of the table , Carlton overhauling Howden's 104 for 6 with their own total of 106 for 4.

Division Three
Pollington moved level at the top with Airmyn who had no game , beating Thorne Colliery by 4 wickets after Thorne had made 105 for 4 , James Stewart hitting 53 and Martin 20 for the Colliery side before Hall ( 29 ) and Paul Baker ( 28 not out ) took Pollington to 109 for 6 and finally bottom club Drax Village 2nds continue to show signs of improvement following their third win of the season , this time against Eggborough who were bowled out for 100 , Scott Dyson top scoring with 46 only for Drax to reply with 101 for 5 , Aiden Coulbeck hitting 36 for Drax for whom Chris Calvert had earlier taken 3 for 20 in the Eggborough innings.
