BRILLIANT BELTON BATTERS BURN

By Glen Sands

Luddington kept up the chase of Snaith Evening League Division One leaders Fishlake with a hard-earned victory at Burn last Thursday but they were made to battle all the way before securing their win by a dogged and determined home team.
Burn won the toss and chose to bat first on what is a quaint little ground by the side of the busy A19 and they made a good start despite some excellent bowling from Jonathan Wroot who finished with figures of 1 for 13 from his allocated overs. Sadly for Ludd the runs were flowing from the other end and although Wroot trapped Lee Adamson LBW for 20 when the score stood at 45 the run rate was rising until Anthony Fitzgerald came on to bowl number three batsman Croad without him having troubled the scorers. Opener Rob Webster was going well, pouncing on anything loose and team mate Prescott was just getting into his stride when he was well caught by wicket keeper Oliver Coulman off Fitzgerald again making the score 72 for 3. Next to the crease was Dave Miller who appeared to be a man on a mission, hitting a quickfire 22 only to be bowled by Liam McAnaney with the Burn total on 99 and just three further runs had been added when Webster was caught in the deep by Jon Wroot, again off McAnaney having reached 45. Jamie Bingle and Rob Adamson then took the score up to 146 for 5 by the end of the alloted overs , Bingle making 30 not out and Adamson 13, Liam McAnaney finishing with figures of 2 for 27 from four along with Fitzgerald who took 2 for 33.
Luddington knew they needed to get off to a good start and that's just how it went with both Jamie Belton (pictured) and Andy Lawson scoring well. Belton's first scoring shot brought him an amazing five runs as a throw at the stumps went for four over throws whilst Lawson blitzed the Burn bowling with two huge sixes in a row , each one landing in the field beyond the A19! Sadly for Lawson he was bowled by Rob Miller having reached 24 after which the scoring rate dropped dramatically as the Burn bowlers hit back with some tight overs. Skipper Mark Coulman had reached 12 when he was second to go, bowled by the impressive Prescott who seemed able to bowl yorkers at will and that brought Russell Fletcher to the crease to join Belton. They took the total past the three figures mark, although they were still behind the rate required to overhaul Burn's total and when Fletcher was caught by Watson off Jamie Bingle for 16 Ludd still needed 30 to win from three remaining overs. Oliver Coulman smashed his first delivery straight back over the bowler for six, then added a four to leave the equasion standing at 20 from two overs but incredibly opener Belton went on to finish the game in just four more scoring shots! Having reached his person half century earlier he prceeded to smash a six, then scramble a couple before whacking his next two deliveries out of the ground to guide Ludd to a spectacular win which keeps them on the heels of leaders Fishlake whom they meet at Luddington on Thursday in what for the Isle side is a must win match.

DIVISION ONE
Their was a strange simitary about the First Division results last Thursday as all three games were won by seven wickets. League leaders Fishlake restricted Askern Welfare to 120 for 7 then successfully chased down their target for the loss of three wickets , Josh Mason once again proving to be their star man when hitting 58 not out for Fishlake but 2009 Champions Luddington are still hanging on to their coat tails following their win at Burn who set a very competItive 146 for 5 thanks to Rob Webster's 45 and Jamie Bingle's 30 not out only for Jamie Belton to guide the Isle side home with a terrific 75 not out including 20 from just four deliveries in the penultimate over when a close finish loomed large! The other Division One game saw a dress rehearsal for the Snaith League Shield when Sykehouse entertained Goole Town and set Town a target of 100 for 8 thanks to Stu Bellwood ( 39 ) and Dan Greenslade (21), J Kerr picking up 4 for 10 for Goole who reached 101 for 3 with Mahoney hitting 34 and Nottingham 27.
