SNAITH & DISTRICT EVENING LEAGUE THURSDAY MAY 1, 2014 BY GLEN SANDS

DIVISION ONE

The new season got underway on May 1st but it was far from ideal cricketing weather as players shivered in the very cool and cloudy conditions but for last season's front runners it was very much business as usual with both Champions Goole Town and rivals Fishlake both starting with wins.

Goole headed to promoted Howden Town who won the toss and chose to bat first , making 99 for 9 thanks in the main to skipper Toby Bodycombe who hit 44 , aided by Matty Milburn who contributed 13 and Nick Hatfield ( 13 not out ) , Jamieson taking 2 for 7 and Oscar Sugden 2for 21 for Goole who replied with 105 for 3 , Sugden top scoring with 53 not out and Jason Greaves 19, James Knibb picking up 2 for 21 for Howden.  Fishlake batted first against Isle of Axholme side Outcasts , posting a total of 110 for 6 , Tim Elliott scoring 49 not out and Jason Teasdale 37 in a terrific third wicket stand , Graeme Fletcher being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 21 from his four overs but Outcasts ran out of time ( and light ) when making 90 in reply , Mark Coulman top scoring with 22 as Josh Yeoman finished the game with a treble wicket maiden !  Thorne Colliery made a winning return to the top flight when they saw off Airmyn by 59 runs. Thorne batted first and set a target of 94 for 6 with Ash Langdale making 43 not out then Luke Cockburn took an impressive 4 for 4 for the Colliery side as Airmyn were bowled out for 35.

DIVISION TWO

Hirst Courtney got off to the very best of starts in Division Two when they returned from Burn with a 10 wicket victory. Leigh Adamson top scored for Burn with 56 whilst team mate Montgomery added 36 in a total of 126 for 8 , Knight taking 4 for 19 for Hirst who eased to 127 without loss thanks to 61 from Copland and 46 from Phil Alford and there was arelatively comfortable win for Carlton Towers at Sykehouse whwere they were victors by six wickets.  Eggborough gained an opening day win against Pollington who batted first and set a target of 117 for 3 , Slater making the most telling contribution with 67 as Bailey picked up 3 for 18 from his four overs then Drew Pearson guided Eggborough to 119 for 6 making 42 , helped along the way by old hands Neil Chadwick and Martin Simpson who it is reputed to have hit the biggest six in Eggborough history during his innings ! Fifteen year old Matthew Dowson showed good promise too in the middle order as his team eased to their target for an opening day win. Finally in Division Two Hensall made a positive start to the season when they beat Drax by 15 runs , Barker hitting 39 in their total of 100 for 4 before Smith picked up 3 for 13 when Drax were restricted to 85 for 6.
