Outcasts
went into their game against unbeaten Horncastle with no less than six changes
from the team that had made such a good start at Scothern on April 27th and they
were undone by a couple of wily old hands as they slipped to a 26
runs defeat despite the very best efforts of Graham Clark who really didn't
deserve to be on the losing side.Horncastle won the toss and chose to bat first , making a
blistering start as young opener Harry Smith struck the ball to all
parts. His partner Kieran Wilson was first to go , trapped LBW by
Matthew Mellers for ten with the total on 54 , then Smith brought up a tremendous half century only to then run himself out on 51 when setting
off for a suicidal single to Darren Clark who threw accurately to Mark Fletcher
who whipped of the bails, leaving the visitors on 65 for 2. Mick Devereux was
next to go , well caught by Russell Fletcher off Graham Clark without troubling the scorers then Clark struck again when brother Darren
caught Jim Watters for 16 with the total on 102. Having made such a cracking
start Horncastle began to find things a little more difficult with Clark and home skipper Liam McAnaney tightening the screw and it was
that man Clark who picked up his third wicket when Julian Lovelyhit another
catch to fielder of the match Darren having made just
five. Graham Clark then really hit a purple patch to put the Isle side in charge
, picking up four further wickets in six deliveries as he bowled Nick Paige for
a well constructed 30 then Joe Smith for four and both Gareth Jones
and Brody Willerton for nought , all four falling with the total on 126. Clark
brought the innings to a close when trapping Richard Hickling LBW for five which
meant Horncastle had scored 134 all out having been well set on 102 for 4 , the
impressive Clark finishing with incredible figures of 8 for 42 from 12.1 overs.
However things didn't go according to plan for the Priorymen who soon
found themselves with their backs to the wall when Horncastle's knowlegable
campaigner Mick Devereux ripped through the top order. David Hobson was first
out , stumped by Richard Dixon , who was to have an excellent afternoon behind
the sticks , off the bowling of Brody Willerton for four then Devereux bowled
John Stokoe for twelve , had Andy Lawson caught behind two balls
later ane bowled number five Russell Fletcher for one leaving Outcasts on 48
for 5 and in need of some major rebuilding. Bowling
hero Graham Clark and youngster Josh Bramhill did that , batting sensibly to
take the total to 82 but just as they appeared set to guide their team closer to
their target Bramhill was adjudged LBW to the slow
bowling of Julian Lovely for 15 which was a big blow to their hopes. Lovely went
on to pick up a further four wickets to close out the
match , as Mark Fletcher , Liam McAnaney , Matthew Mellers and
finally the battling Graham Clark ( for 37 ) all succumbed to the Outcasts nemesis of pace off bowling , leaving them 26 runs short of the
Horncastle score. Lovely ended the innings with outstanding figures
of 5 for 17 and Devereux 4 for 21 , clinching a maximum points haul
of 20 points for the visitors whilst Outcasts gained five for their bowling
performance.So it was a disappointing
result for the Isle side despite their much changed team and they will hope to
improve when making the short journey to Brumby Hall on May 11th to take on
Appleby Frodingham 2nds who have had something of an indian sign over them in
recent seasons. Horncastle have on the other hand won three and will be in good
heart when they take on Scunthorpe Town 2nds along the way at Heslam Park.
