AMAZING SMILE NORTH LINDSEY LEAGUE ROUND-UP OF MAY 12 GAMES

WEEKEND PREVIEW  BY GLEN SANDS

The newly inaugurated Amazing Smile KO Cup takes centre stage on Sunday with seven first round ties scheduled to be played.  There is an all First Division clash at Caistor where Hibaldstow are their opponents whilst Scunthorpe Town might anticipate a tough match against Second Division Haxey. The same applies to Barton Academy Vikins who entertain another Second Division side in Messingham and it is likely to be a hard fought affair at Alkborough who take on Third Division Cleethorpes. Blyth CC , another Division Three side , make the long trip to Division One side Broughton and League One leaders Grimsby Town make the relatively short trip to South Kelsey. Finally there is a much anticipated Isle of Axholme derby at Hirst Priory where Outcasts will be out to put one over on their near neighbours Luddington.  There is also one Amazing Smile NLL Division Three game at Everton who play hosts to Misterton who will be looking to start their 2013 Sunday League campaign with a good performance.

ROUND-UP OF LAST SUNDAY'S ACTION
Only two of the nine scheduled  Amazing Smile North Lindsey League games were played to a conclusion on May 12th due to the rain which swept across the county but both produced some great entertainment and one outstanding performance by a seasoned Isle of Axholme cricketer.

DIVISION ONE
Grimsby Town have made a terrific start to the new season by winning both of their opening games , the latest coming by a margin of just four runs at Broughton where Ross Carnelley top scored with 35 and Steve Crossley 31 as Grimsby posted a total of 125 all out , Tom Brock taking 4 for 16 for the home side who replied with 121 all out thanks chiefly to Shaun Clark who hit 31 and Tom Reed's 30 , Brendan Volley picking up 5 for 16 to help his team to a narrow win. Elsewhere Harry Boulton had raced to 42 not out as Caistor Cougars reached 57 without loss against Appleby Frodingham only for the rain to intervene and the Hibaldstow v Scunthorpe Town match never even started before being postponed by the umpires.

DIVISION TWO
Andy Lawson took centre stage as Division Three Champions began life in Division Two with a 12 run victory at Messingham. Home skipper  Danny Rands and his opposite number Gareth Parkin were keen to play despite the inclement weather and with the agreement of umpires Steve Dixon and Lee Stothard they got underway just fifteen minutes after the scheduled start with Luddington taking first knock and it was that man Lawson with an awesome display of batting that saw him make 128 in just 74 deliveries with sixteen 4's and seven sixes who guided the Isle side to 214 for 7 , Oliver Saxon offering him late assistance with 18 not out , but Messingham almost found a hero of their own as Nick White blasted 72 not out late in their reply as they made 202 for 9 , New Zealand youngster Cole Briggs hitting 49 and Danny Rands 45 as they made Luddington fight all the way. Alkborough had reached 87 for 3 at Barton before their game was abandoned , Dave Kilgallon having scored 33 and Tom Palin having picked up a couple of wickets whilst the Isle derby at Hirst Priory was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

DIVISION THREE
It would appear that Cleethorpes are set to make a determined effort in their quest to climb back up the Lindsey League ladder and they made a statement when blasting 199 for 1 against Blyth CC before the rain arrived at Chichester Road , Mike Chamberlain scoring 85 not out and Stuart Wood 79 not out for the Meggies. Upton cum Kexby had barely started against near neighbours Everton before their game was abandoned with the total standing at just 13 for 1 and down the road at Misterton the scheduled game with South Kelsey never got underway much to their disappointment.
So it was something of a damp squib for most , although a certain Mr Lawson will have fond memories of his sides opening game in Division Two.
