Outcasts 2nd eleven remain unbeaten after five matches and they broke the Lincolnshire League record for most runs scored in an innings when beating Scunthorpe Town 3rds on May 31st. It was a red letter day for opener Andrew Lawson too who hit 101 in just 55 deliveries as he and Anthony Fitzgerald put on 151 runs for the first wicket.
Scunthorpe were missing some of their regulars due to a wedding but did themselves no favours when winning the toss and inviting the Isle side to bat first which proved to be a wrong move as Lawson and Fitzgerald set about the bowling with relish , Lawson in particular blasting the ball to all parts with great ferocity. The score raced to three figures as golfer Lawson proved his ability in another sport by quickly making a half century , although Fitzgerald was no slouch as he too looked assured at the crease. Lawson brought up his ton with a typical boudary but he was then bowled by Matt Pashley from the very next ball when he inadvertantly played on when playing a rare defensive stroke with the total on 151. As often happens after a long partnership the next wicket fell quickly , Fitzgerald being trapped LBW for 41 and when Jack Lupton was then caught by Pashley off leg spinner Snowden for 14 Scunthorpe briefly appeared to be back in the match. Russell Fletcher went cheaply then two more of Outcasts " Dad's Army " cricketing veterans came together to pile on the runs , David Hobson ( 15 ) and Andy Torr ( an excellent 47 ) pushing the total past two hundred. Matthew Teal hit a quickfire 26 and Stuart Clark 17 as the runs continued to flow and it was left to Tom Sharpe to bring up the 300 with a towering six that ensured a place in the record books for Jason Whiteley's team.
Once the Scunthorpe innings got underway it quickly became apparant that it was not to be Scunthorpe's day as Alex Fletcher produced a devastating spell of bowling that saw them reduced to 1 for 4 ! He bowled Andy Knapperand had Austin Seels caught behind by Jack Lupton then Andrwe Lawson threw the stumps down to run out Snowden who became the third duck of the innings. Before too long Fletcher had produced two more stunning deliveries to bowl out Matt Pashley and Jon Jacklin. By the close of the innings he had picked up 6 for 18 with Tom Sharpe taking 2 for 21 as the shell shocked Scunthorpe side were bowled out for 39 , Tim Foster providing their only resistance by hitting 21 but it was to no avail and Outcasts went on to win the contest by an incredible 265 runs , lifting them up to second in the Division Three table.
The first team should have been at home to Scunthorpe Town 2nds but the outfield was too wet with standing water in places but they currently find themselves in third spot in Division One although they face a tough task on June 7th when they head to the coast to take on Cleethorpes 2nds whilst the seconds host Barton Town 2nds at what they hope will be a drier Hirst Priory , both sides looking to continue their unbeaten starts to the 2014 season.
