LUDDINGTON v APPLEBY-FRODINGHAM - BROUGHTON EVENING LEAGUE

BY GLEN SANDS

Luddington beat reigning champions Appleby-Frodingham on June 11th in a low scoring thriller on the Isle to go to the top of the table.
Groundsman Dill Pullan had worked hard to get a wicket ready despite all the rain earlier in the week and it was Frod who had first knock on an understandably low and slow track.Alex Grimes was first to go , caught by home skipper Liam McAnaney off Doug Fann for six then Haxey youngster Tom Smith was bowled by Graeme Fletcher for seven leaving the Steelmen on 15 for 2. The brother Brown were the next two batsmen to head back to the boudary edge , the first caught by Oliver Coulman off Fletcher for two then Cory being run out following a superb throw in the deep by Fann and at 20 for 4 the visitors were struggling. Captain Matt Fowler held the innings together with a terrific knock of 41 but wickets continued to fall around him , Ludd debutant Paul Mitchell bowling superbly when taking 3 for 12 from his four overs one of which was that of Fowler who was out to an absolutely blinding catch by Danny Taylor. Frod finished on 64 for 8 from their 16 overs which offered Ludd a great opportunity to pick up the three points.
Oliver Coulman was the first Luddington man to go , caught by Scott Grimes off Sam Yates for eight then Spud Tait and Andy Lawson took the total to 36 before Tait was caught in the deep by Matt Fowler off Scott Grimes for 16. Lawson was having difficulty timing his shots and was the third man out when he was smartly stumped by Alex Grimes off the bowling of Sarah Sundarum having made just six. Paul Mitchell was next to go , picking out Tom Smith in the deep to give Sundarum her second wicket and when Jamie Arrowsmith lofted a catch to Fowler , again off Sundarum Ludd were teetering on 52 for 5 and in danger of throwing away what should have been a comfortable victory. However Rick Green and Danny Taylor held their nerve to guide their team home , Green finishing on 15 not out and Taylor on seven as they won with just three deliveries to spare.
Credit to the young Frodingham side who made Ludd fight hard for every run but ultimately it was the Isle side who took the points after which they retired to the River Don at Eastoft who laid on some welcome food which went down well.
