OUTCASTS WIN AT SCOTHERN IN LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION

BY GLEN SANDS

Both Outcasts sides remain unbeaten in the Lincolnshire League with both picking up a full haul of 20 points on June 14th , the first eleven winning a top of the table thriller at previously unbeaten Scothern to close the gap on them at the top of the table.
It was the Isle side who batted first with Oliver Coulman and Scott Buttrick putting on 17 for the first wicket before Coulman was trapped LBW by Josh Parker having hit two terrific sixes then Jack Lawson struck twice in as many deliveries when bowling James Glew and Jack Lupton who failed to trouble the scorers. Darren Clark avoided the hat trick and along with Buttrick took the total to 66 then he was adjudged LBW to slow bowler Richard Johnson for 24. Charlie Mason , playing his first game of the season after returning from university joined Buttrick ,  who looked untroubled until being called for a second run then fatally being turned back which saw him run out for 30. Mason didn't last much longer before he was harshly  given out LBW to Ian McGowan for seven then Stuart Clark and Peter Tait took the score to 92 then the former was stumped by Steve Bett off Johnson for 12. Tait was next to go , skying a catch to Lawson to give McGowan his second victim and without a run being added the innings was brought to a close when Tom Sharpe then skipper Liam McAnaney were out leaving Outcasts on a seemingly below par total of 99 , Richard Johnson and Ian McGowan taking 3 for 32 and 3 for 11 respectively , the latter bowling five maidens from seven overs !
To have any hope of winning the game it was vital that Outcasts bowled and fielded well and that is just what they did , putting the Scothern batsmen under pressure and they soon made the break through when Liam McAnaney found the edge of Drabble's bat for Jack Lupton to take the first of four catches.. Mark Conyers went by the same combination with the score on 26 and Graeme Fletcher was quick to join the party when he trapped the dangerous Peter Wright for ten leaving Scothern on 34 for 3. Liam Harris and Sam Naughton took the total to 52 before Harris nicked off to Lupton to give McAnaney his third victim then Naughton's cameo of 20 came to an end when he picked out Tom Sharpe at mid wicket off Fletcher and suddenly what appeared a simple task of easing to three figures was looking anything but for the home side. It was at this point when Tom Sharpe entered proceedings and he tilted the game in Outcasts favour with an exceptional spell of six outstanding overs. He began by having Richard Johnson caught behind for seven then with the total on 89 , just eleven from victory , he induced a rash drive from home skipper Ian Brown which Scott Buttrick caught and the fielding side knew they were in sight of a famous win. Ian McGowan swung wildly at a quick delivery and was bowled for just a single when they still needed nine to win then James Glew took a splendid catch at slip to send Josh Parker back to the pavilion which left Scotehrn on 93 for 9. Liam McAnaney broght himself back on to bowl and his first delivery saw him trap Jack Lawson bang infront of the stumps which brought an explosion of joy from his team mates as they pulled off an unlikely victory against the league leaders. Tom Sharpe finished with the impressive figures of 4 for 6 from six overs whilst McAnaney had 4 for 37 and Fletcher 2 for 36 in what was a very good team performance.
