GLEN SANDS REPORTS FROM ALKBOROUGH
Scunthorpe Town 2nds deservedly beat Outcasts 2nds at Alkborough on August 12th to lift the Bob Welton Cup in a game they generally dominated , partularly with the bat.
Town's Neil Patrick won the toss and invited Outcasts to bat first and they soon picked up their first wicket when Mark Coulman was splendidly caught at slip by Pop Robson off John Hernon for eight with the total on 20. Darren Clark and Anthony Fitzgerald then put together a partnership of 36 before Clark was adjudged LBW to Navdeep Dhinsa having made 34 then Fitzgerald was caught by Josh Pashley off the bowling of the miserly Robson for nine with the overall score on 68. Pashley then picked up the first of three wickets when he had Peter Tait caught by Steve Chapman for twelve which brought together the father and son duo of Jon and Josh Bramhill. Josh had reached six when he was caught by Dhinsa off Robson and MArk Fletcher became the sixth wicket to fall when the score stood at 99, being trapped LBW by Pashley for three. Charlie Mason helped Bramhill senior take the total to 109 when he was caught by wicket keeper David Brown off Pashley for four then Brown snaffled the prized wicket of Bramhill off David Peacock fr 27 as the Outcasts innings drew to a close. Another father and son combo , Ian and Graeme Fletcher added 27 runs to hold up the Scunthorpe bowlers for a while then Graeme was run out for six and the same fate befell number eleven Jon Wroot leaving skipper Ian on 17 not out and the all out total on 143. Josh Pashley finished with 3 for 36 but it was Pop Robson that took the plaudits with outstanding figures of nine overs five maidens two for seven , rightly earning him the accolade of man of the match.
Neil Patrick and 15 year old Dylan Hopkins opened for Town and took the score to 21 when Jon Wroot struck a double blow as he had Patrick caught by Charlie Mason for seven then followed that by bowling Jamie Brumby with the very next ball leaving Scunthorpe on 21 for 2. David Brown joined young Hopkins in the middle and from that moment on they simply cruised to victory , both batsmen showing maturity beyond their years as they took the game by the scruff of the neck. Hopkins brought up an impressive half century first , ending the innings on a highly creditable 67 not out whilst Brown improved with every delivery , finishing on 60 not out as Scunthorpe eased to 144 for 2 in the 37th over.
Lincolnshire League Chairman Bob Welton thanked Alkborough for the use of their excellent facilities and praised Phylis Mitchell and her helpers for their delicious teas. He then thanked umpires Ian Foster and Ken Burton from the Lincoln umpires association , scorers John Abey and Glen Sands for keeping the scoreboard ticking and finally commiserated with holders Outcasts before inviting Neil Patrick to collect the trophy.
