OUTCASTS 2NDS v BARTON TOWN 2NDS - LINCS LEAGUE DIV 3

BY GLEN SANDS

Outcasts 2nds gained a terrific win against Barton Town 2nds in a game kindly sponsored by J F Electrical which was played on the hottest day of the summer.Home captain Jason Whiteley won the toss and chose to bat first but the Isle side were soon one down when Josh Bramhill was bowled by a good delivery from Nathan Jones then Regs Koen picked up a second wicket when he produced a similar ball to remove Russell Fletcher with the total on 22. James Glew and David Hobson then put together a partnership of 40 with Glew in particular playing some expansive shots before he was third out , stumped by Matt Waller off Mike Wilkinson for an entertaining 29. Hobson was then joined by Charlie Mason and they batted splendidly as the Barton side were made to toil in the sun. Mason hit one excellent six and five boudary fours in his score of 43 but perished in his quest for late runs when he was stumped off the bowling of Lucas Waller having added 74 valuable runs with the dependable Hobson. Peter Tait edged a wide delivery from Nathan Jones to wicket keeper Matt Waller with just six to his name then Hobson was caught at mid off by Danny Harris off Koen for an well constructed 56. Waller picked up a fourth victim when catching Anthony Fitzgerald off Koen for four and Jon Wroot also scored four before he was bowled by Koen , earning the bowler his fourth wicket of the innings. Lee Gash was comfortably caught by Andrew Tester off Jones having scored seven and the innings was brought to a close when Jason Whiteley was run out from the final delivery with the total on 174 , Koens with 4 for 29 and Jones with 3 for 24 being Barton's most successful bowlers.
Barton's reply saw them lose Mike Wilkinson early , trapped LBW by Lee Gash for eightthen captain Alex Shreeve was bowled by Jason Whiteley in somewhat peculiar circumstances when only one bail was removed which took a while to be noticed by everyone. At 40 for 2 the visitors needed to re group but opener Michael Hinchliffe was soon back in the pavilion when he was well caught by Gash off Jon Wroot for 26 then Nathan Jones was sent back to the hutch by home skipper Whiteley having failed to trouble the scorers , leaving the total on 51 for 4. Matt Waller made six before he became Whiteley's third wicket and at 68 for 5 Barton had their backs to the wall. However Regs Koen was still at the crease and with the aid of some terrific batting from Danny Harris the Humbersiders began to fight back, They took the total to 114 before Harris was crucially stumped by Peter Tait off Whiteley for an excellent 16 but Koen refused to give up the ghost and set about blasting the ball to all parts as he brought up an outstanding half century. Jack Griffin made nine before he was run out by a terrific piece of fielding by Anthony Fitzgerald and it was Fitz who played  a further part in matters when he bowled Andrew Tester for two. The dangerous Koen was still a threat to the Priorymen but they were fielding well and managing to restrict him to singles , then in a desperate attempt to find the boundary the big man was bowled for an impressive 61 allowing Outcasts to breath a collective sigh of relief. The drama did'nt end there though as they needed to take one further wicket to collect all twenty points and that came from the penultimate delivery of the game when Lee Gash cleverly bowled a slower ball to fox Jack Waller into a false drive which saw him bowled for four , leaving Barton all out for 161. Skipper Whiteley picked up 5 for 69 from his fifteen overs whilst Lee Gash finished with 2 for 32 and special mention should also go to Alex Fletcher who's opening spell saw him end with excellent figures of seven overs three maidens nought for thirteen.
So Outcasts gained twenty valuable points in what was a well contested game against a battling Barton side who remain in the top four. The win was important for the Isle side who continue to climb away from the lower reaches of the Third Division table and will look for a similar performance against Laportes on July 20th whilst Barton will be hoping to bounce back with a win against recently improved South Kelsey who travel to Marsh Lane the same day.
