LOUTH WIN GRIMSBY CRICKET KNOCKOUT

BY ANN BOULTON

A new name will be engraved on the Grimsby Town Knock Out trophy after Louth triumphed over Lincolnshire Cavaliers in a game in which bowlers dominated once again.
Louth won the toss and elected to bat but lost semi-final big hitter Stewart West in the second over, caught by Matt Rutherford off the bowling of David White.
The next over brought the wicket of Laurence Scott in a family affair that saw Tom Webb take a high one-handed catch off brother Matt’s bowling.
However, it was to be six overs before Cavaliers’ next success as Jason Collinson and Amila Wetasingha added 45, Collinson finally falling to a catch by Geoff Middleton off Matt Rutherford for 23.
Rutherford also dismissed the Sri Lankan, caught by Matt Webb on 33 with the score on 81 and in the final four overs, three more wickets fell as Louth reached a seemingly modest total of 117 for seven, Rutherford finishing with three for 30 off his four overs.
Cavaliers’ innings started in similar fashion, Wetasingha taking the wickets of Alex Heslop and Tom Webb in his two opening overs while at the other end Andy Carrington dismissed Luke Robinson in his second over.
Simon Webb and Rutherford dug in but by the time Rutherford was bowled by Stewart West, Cavaliers were well behind the run rate.
With Webb still at the crease, the rate picked up over the next four overs and with 12 gone, despite another two wickets going, there was very little in it.
However, the 13th over brought the return of Wetasingha to the attack and the fall of two more wickets, including Webb for 36 and second wicket for Tom Corden in the 15th over saw Cavaliers all out for 93.
West finished with three for 30 and Wetasingha four for 18 which, with his 33 runs, earned him the Man of the Match award.
The final was sponsored by Portlock Painting Services and by Springboard Recruitment, on whose behalf Stuart Maxwell presented the trophies.
Grimsby Town CC wish to thank all sponsors, helpers and spectators who contributed to making 2013 another very good competition.
