W. RHODES IN ACTION FOR YORKSHIRE SIDE IN GRIMSBY KNOCKOUT

BY ANN BOULTON

Graeme Hume’s first appearance in the Grimsby Town Knock Out was instrumental in Cleethorpes’ progress to the semi-finals at the expense of Fenner.
Hume, back for his second year as Cleethorpes overseas player, missed the Meggies’ only game in the 2012 competition but this year batted and bowled his side through to a semi-final match against Louth.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Cleethorpes captain Alex Osmond opened the innings with Hume, getting off to a slow start with only 28 runs coming off the first four overs.  In the fifth, Osmond was bowled by Steve Sergeant for 21 and with only four runs added, Will Rhodes bowled Joe Farmery.
Indy Hayre joined Hume to take the innings into the eighth over and the total to 55 before he too was bowled, this time by Ryan Kirk and with 72 on the board, Sergeant struck again to dismiss Bill Kirby, caught by Kirk.
This brought Callum Robinson to the crease and he and Hume gradually upped the run rate, Hume reaching his 50 in which he hit five fours and two sixes and when the overs ran out, Cleethorpes were 141 for four, Hume unbeaten on 74 and Robinson on 17 while Sergeant finished with an economical two for 20 off his four overs.
Hume then opened the bowling and scored immediate success, bowling Dominic Rhodes and having Will Rhodes caught behind by John Mansfield in his first over.
Fred Lumby took the next wicket with the score on 22 but Fenner dug in and after eight overs were three runs ahead of the Cleethorpes score on 58 for four.
But in the ninth over, Alex Osmond struck twice to dismiss danger men Ross Davy and Sam Fuller and from here the Hull side fell behind despite the efforts of Sergeant and Kirk.
Sergeant was bowled by Liam Dickens to make it 101 for eight and the last two wickets fell with only two runs added, Osmond finishing with three for 21 and Hume three for 22.
Hume was named man of the match and was presented with his award by Stephen Smith of Infiniti Hull.  This match was sponsored by Peter Beavis Fencing and East Ferry Timber.
Next Monday’s game is between Lincolnshire Cavaliers and Messingham.
