SCUNTHORPE TOWN JUST EDGE OUT APP-FROD FOR NORTH LINDSEY SUNDAY TITLE
BY GLEN SANDS
The destination of the North Lindsey Cricket League first division title went right to the wire with Scunthorpe Town edging out neighbours Appleby-Frodingham by virtue of having won more games with both teams locked on 25 points.
On Sunday, Appleby-Frodingham were due to play a double header against Barton Academy Vikings but were awarded six points when the Vikings conceded the match due to lack of players.
That meant Scunthorpe needed to win a tough encounter at Caistor if they were to pip their neighbours.
Luke Smith scored 52 and the ever dependable Ramesh Chand 45 as Town set a target of 169 for 9.
Then young off-spinner Rory Franklin took 6 for 21 and Ian Snowden 3 for 7 as the Cougars were bowled out for 119 , Harry Boulton top scoring with 49.
Promotion from division two was also decided by who had won more games with Messingham clinching second spot ahead of Alkborough but behind Hibaldstow.
At the other end of the table, Barton Town 4ths finished next to bottom after they were beaten at Cleethorpes, Town scoring 98 all out thanks chiefly to Mike Hinchcliff who scored 44, Lewis Markham taking 6 for 21 for the Meggies who eased to 101 for 1, Bill Kirby making 55 not out.
Upton cum Kexby ensured that they finished second in Division Three with a 46 runs victory over Everton. Haydn Green scored 72 not out as Upton cum Kexby made 210 for 7 , Rehmen picking up 5 for 57 for Everton who were then dismissed for 164 , Peter Dobson top scoring on 42 as Toby Roberts claimed 3 for 30. Pending any restructuring of the leagues this victory should mean promotion for Upton who hit top form as the season ended , picking up the Division Three KO Cup as well.
The North Lindsey League would like to thank Mick Walker and his fellow Scunthorpe umpires who officiated throughout the season. As ever they have done stirling work which is greatly appreciated by all the clubs.
NF ADDS: I'm sure all clubs and players will join Lincs Cricket Latest in acknowledging the incredible amount of hard work put in by Glen Sands in administering the North Lindsey League, which is not the easiest of tasks, particularly with the number of re-arrangements, cancellations, double headers and non-fulfilled fixtures this season.
