Outcasts' season in Lincs League Division One ended with an all too familiar result yesterday, as they were beaten by promotion chasing Bracebridge Heath 2nds in their final match of a very disappointing summer that has seen them fail to win a single game despite some early season "near misses ".
Outcasts batted first at Hirst Priory when winning the toss but soon found themselves two wickets down as David Hobson was trapped LBW by the impressive 15 year old Cameron Hall for eight quickly followed by Andy Lawson who was bowled by Matt Knights having scored a dozen. Andy Torr and promising prospect Josh Bramhill then put together a partnership of 48 before Torr was bolwed by spinner John Kerridge for 24. Skipper Russell Fletcher was next to go in the same manner having made five and without a run being added Bramhill was caught on the deep mid wicket boundary by Camern Hall off Ross Carnelley for a well constructed 19. Peter Tait and Danny Taylor then took the total past three figures only for the latter to be bowled by New Zealander Josh Lee which brought the in form Tom Sharpe to the crease to join Tait who was looking quite comfortable. They took the score to 120 before Sharpe was trapped LBW by Kerridge for 13 and when Tait was bowled by Lee for a top score equalling 24 the end was not far away. Jason Whiteley's poor run with the bat continued then there was a last blast by Jonathan Wroot who hit a huge six before Graeme Fletcher was last man out , caught in the deep by Hall to earn Lee his fourth wicket and leave the Outcasts total on 128 which was never likely to be enough against a strong Bracebrig batting line up. Josh Lee was the pick of the visitors bowlers picking up 4 for 26 although John Kerridge's figures of 3 for 33 was testament to his prestigious spin that at times bamboozled the Outcasts batsmen.
If they were to have any hope of gaining an unlikely victory Outcasts needed early wickets and they did pick up skipper Carl Stubbs who was run out for five following a superb throw from the deep by Tom Sharpe who has a tremendous arm. Opener Graham McDowall was joined by brother Andy and they took the total to 50 when the former was bowled bya beauty from Sharpe , Graham having scored 19 but the runs continued to flow as Ross Carnelley strode to the middle. He had reached 17 when he was caught by Russell Fletcher off Jason Whiteley with the total standing at 91 but that was to be the end of Outcasts success as McDowall wen on to make 42 not out and Josh Lee 15 , Bracebridge cruising to 129 for 3 in the 32nd over.
With results elsewhere, Bracebridge know that a full points haul against Cleethorpes 3rds next Saturday will see them promoted whilst Outcasts must await that same result to see if they finish te season ahead of the Meggies who have had a similarly poor season to that endured by the Priorymen.
