STEELMEN'S FINE START WASHED OUT

By Graham Hackney, Cleethorpes CC

Cleethorpes were left frustrated by the rain on Sunday which forced the abandonment of their Yorkshire league cup Quarter final tie at Appleby-Frodingham. With a number of players unavailable, Cleethorpes travelled to Scunthorpe having made three changes from Saturday’s narrow win over Harrogate. Stuart Harvey, Fred Lumby and Patrick Hughes all came into the side against a Frodingham team buoyed by their fourth position in the Yorkshire league. Stand-in Skipper Bill Kirby won the toss and had no hesitation inserting the home side with the poor weather forecast threatening. Omesh Wijesiriwardana opened the attack with Jack Harrison and was immediately driven for four by Frod opener Matt Morland. Morland was to dish out further punishment in Harrison’s next two overs hammering the young paceman for four superb boundaries. Frodingham’s openers had taken the score to 36-0 after eight overs when persistent drizzle left the umpires with no option but to leave the field and despite taking an early tea, the rain gradually got heavier. This two captains decided to abandon the fixture shortly after and the the two sides will reconvene at Brumby Hall on Sunday July 3rd with the prospect of a away Semi-final tie at either Scarborough or Harrogate who were also abandoned on Sunday.
