WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

By Glen Sands

Snaith & District League Division One
Fishlake were crowned Champions of the Fisrt Division after Drax Village were unable to field a team for the third time in the league this season , their inability to send a team to Fishlake resulting in the home side collecting the win they required to finish ahead of Luddington who had a nightmare in fielding a team themselves as harvest , holiday and even a car breakdown on the way to the game saw their ten men well beaten at Sykehouse for whom Phil Sanders hit 80 in a total of 156 for 2 , Gary Strephen hitting 29 himself , then the Isle side were reduced to 74 all out as Dave Beavers picked up 3 for 15. Goole Town beat Burn in the one other First Division game scoring an exceptional 212 for 2 including an unbeaten ton from a curiously un named Town opener before Burn were held to 105 for 5 , ensuring that their one year stay in Division One ended in a defeat despite some close matches.

Snaith & District League Division Two
Hensall played their outstanding match with Goole Firemen on Tuesday July 27th , and their mnarrow 5 runs victory meant that they climbed into top spot , a place they cemented on Thursday when they gained another three points haul at Howden who made 80 for 7 when batting first and gave Hensall a tough fight before they reached 81 for 7 , Andy Sleight taking 3 for 5 for Howden. Hirst Courtney refuse to lie down in the hunt for the title and their 8 wicket win against Carlton Towers means that their meeting at Hensall on August 5th will now be for the Championship. Towers made 98 for 7 with 20 from Clayton , Craig Lawson picking up 4 for 15 for Hirst who then saw Howard hit 41 and Stones 39 on their way to 101 for 2 and finally Goole Firemen gained an excellent 25 runs win at Sturgethorpe who bowled the Firemen out for 89 , D West top scoring with 35 as Fred Drury took 3 for 15 then West starred with the ball , taking 3 for 19 as Sturgethorpe were bowled out for 64.

Snaith & District League Division Three
Things are very close now at the top of League Division Three with no less than three of the five teams level on 19 points. Eggborough finished their campaign with a win over Pollington which moved them onto 19 points but Airmyn, who were the third side at the top , suffered a surprise defeat at Drax Village 2nds. Airmyn posted a total of 158 for 7 , W Smith top scoring on 33 but Drax replied with 160 for 6 , Nicholson hitting 35 and Lawson 29 to guide the Village 2nd string to a fourth win of the season.
