MUMBY'S MILESTONE

Veteran cricketer Col Mumby will celebrate his 60th birthday in December and some of his many mates from local cricket are getting a card together to mark the magnificent milestone. Having played at a much higher level, he's now appearing in Lincs div three for Broughton 2nds.
Lincs Cricket Latest is asking ALL Col's team-mates - past and present - plus his many opponent down the decades to get in touch via email through this link
MUMBY'S MILESTONE
Col is one of the great characters of Lincolnshire cricket - great fun on and off the field - ranging from his hole-filled undies worn throughout a North Lindsey League double-winning season to notable impressions of Dad's Army's Private Fraser ("We're doomed! We're doomed!) it's been a laugh a minute. And there have been many, many minutes in Col's long career which started with Elsham (remember them?) in the early 1960s and has taken in Brigg Sugar, Brigg Town, Broughton and other ports of call. Amazingly, he's still playing - and scoring - goals in the Scunthorpe Saturday Football League for Briggensians FC. He was good enough, in the late 1960s, to play for Scunthorpe United Reserves alongside the great Kevin Keegan, who went on to earn fame and fortune with Liverpool and England. Col's hair is a good bit greyer than it was when this picture was taken during his first team days at Broughton but he's amazingly fit for his age - despite all those pints he's supped over a game of evening dominoes at favourite watering hole the Black Bull. Although primarily a batsman, his leg-spin bowling has been sadly under-used by a procession of captains (in Col's opinion), prompting the frequently-heard on-field comment: "Bring Mumby on!" Those captains who have followed the advice have often been rewarded with a wicket or two!
