HOPEFULLY NOW AN ANNUAL EVENT
By Liam Redmond, Scunthorpe Town CC
The Scunthorpe Town all-rounder, who was involved in the organisation of Bank Holiday Monday's inaugural Twenty20 at Heslam Park, gives us a full rundown of what went on...
The day went very well and the weather was kind to us. Intersport kindly sponsored the event, donating some raffle prizes.
Neil Patrick's Scunthorpe XI won the tournament, with Andy Fidell's Scunthorpe XI 2nd, my Yellowbellies 3rd and Doug Chapman's Rugby XI taking the wooden spoon.
Neil Patrick's XI played the Rugby boys first up and posted a mammoth 220... With numerous 50 retireds including one from the captain himself Neil and a quickfire 50 from John Hernon. The rugby boys managed 80 in reply, with veteran Iggy Ibrahim taking a hat-trick.
The next game was Yellowbellies v Andy Fidell's Scunthorpe XI... Yellowbellies elected to bat and we posted 118-8 with Rob Day making 50 retired. Wickets were shared between the XI. Scunthorpe then made the total with the loss of 6 wickets with 8 balls to spare, Simon Kiddle getting an influential 50 retired and veteran Willie McVey taking 3 wickets for the Yellowbellies.
The 3rd and 4th place game then followed with the rugby boys batting first and making 150-9, Jack Richards taking a couple of wickets along with a couple of run outs. And the others were shared around. Yellowbellies then started strongly with Dale Coy hitting a quickfire 30-odd but lost Richard Bedwell with 40-odd on the board and Dale soon followed. Jack Richards then lasted until the 16th over but holed out. That brought Rob Day to the crease to finish the job in style with Brian McVey, leaving a couple of overs to spare.
The final didn't live up to expectation. Andy Fidell's Scunthorpe XI batted first and were skittled for a poor 55, with spin dominating - Sunny Sen taking a couple and Josh Pashley likewise - with Ian Snowden falling for single figures along with Simon Kiddle. Andy Fidell's big six off Ram Chand was the only highlight of the innings. Neil Patrick's XI made easy work of the total - only Neil himself failing, being dismissed LBW by youngster Declan Toyne. Ram Chand was the mainstay taking apart fellow Scunthorpe 1st teamer Simon Kiddle to see Patrick's XI home.
A big thank-you goes to Intersport for sponsoring the event. And also to everyone who turned out to watch, plus Cathrine, the Heslam Park manager, who did the BBQ.
We are hoping to make the 20/20 day an annual event after this year's success.
