BIG HITTING, BEER AND A BARBIE!

By Graham Hackney

All at Cleethorpes CC will be praying for good weather for the club’s annual Twenty20 cup this Sunday. Once again kindly sponsored by Chris Broadburn of E.A Broadburn (Chemists) Ltd, the days first semi-final sees hosts Cleethorpes take on Hull YPI at 10.30am. The second semi (1.30pm) sees an intriguing encounter between cup holders Sheffield United and new participants West Indian Cavaliers. The Cavaliers are regular winners of the Nottinghamshire ECB Premier League and promise to be a big draw. They field a number of ex-first class players and produced a sparkling display of big-hitting at the ground three years ago when taking on Cleethorpes in the National Knockout competition. The final is due to start around 5pm in what should be a great day for local cricket supporters. Usual Twenty20 rules apply with bowlers limited to four overs and power plays. Supported have the incentive of cash prizes for catches taken beyond the boundary, while there will be a beer tent and barbeque to keep them fed and watered. Admission is free and there is parking available on the ground. James Osmond leads Cleethorpes as they aim to take the cup for the first time and field a guest player in Sri Lankan fast bowler Omesh Wijesiriwardane, from the Kent Premier league, who can also hit the ball a long way.
All spectators are welcome - so come along and support your local side.

There are just two fixtures for Cleethorpes sides this Saturday as focus turns to the club’s Twenty20 Cup on Sunday. The 1st X1 entertain lowly Harrogate in the Yorkshire league hoping to build on four successive wins that have kept them in the hunt for a top six finish. Neither the 2nds, 3rds or 4ths are in action but the Academy side travel to Burgh le Marsh for an East Lindsey encounter.
