COY AND LINDLEY HALF-CENTURIES ON OPENING NIGHT OF THE SEASON

BROUGHTON EVENING LEAGUE ROUND-UP BY GLEN SANDS

The recently resurrected Broughton Evening League got under way on Wednesday May 22nd with title holders Broughton taking on Scunthorpe Scorpions at Heslam Park and it proved to be a real thriller that went to the very last delivery.
Dale Coy hit fifty for Broughton before retiring as per the BEL rules and Broughton went on to set a target of 135 for 8 but brother Luke and Jake Smith both hit 34 as the Scorpions chased hard , finding themselves needing twenty to win from the final over and with a typical sting in the tail Liam Redmond saw them home taking them to 136 for 7 from the last ball of the game.
Barton Town joined the league this year and their first outing saw them travel to Brumby Hall to take on Appleby Frodingham who posted a total of 140 for 4 thanks to 50 ( retired ) from Kieran Lindley and 40 from Matt Fowler and despite 48 from Ian Andrew Barton fell 23 runs short as Matt Fowler picked up 3 for 38 for the Steelmen.
Finally out on the Isle of Axholme Luddington began with a good win against Normanby Park thanks in the main to local lad Darren Clark who hit 51 ( retired ) then finished the Normanby Park innings by taking 3 wickets for 2 runs for a man of the match performance.
Luddington reached 153 for 2 when batting first , Andy Lawson hitting 27 and Peter Tait 23 to add to Clark's dazzling display then Jacob Render led the visitors reply when top scoring with 32 in a total of 93 for 8 , leaving them 60 shy of the Luddington total.
