MEGGIES SEE OFF STEELMEN

Report and pictures by Graham Hackney

Bill Kirby starts the season in fine style for Cleethorpes.

Cleethorpes 1st X1 got their Yorkshire league campaign of to an excellent start in glorious conditions at Chichester Road on Saturday. With overseas professional Omesh Wijisarewardana still to arrive due to visa delays, James Osmond’s side recorded a morale boosting six-wicket victory after chasing down a modest target of 144. After winning the toss Frod Skipper Matt Morland opted to bat first but Cleethorpes struck two early blows that Frod were never able to recover from. Jack Harrison, opening the bowling with veteran Andy Ellis, removed the Scunthorpe’s side overseas player Brandon Handley with his second ball as a full delivery beat his defences to shatter his stumps. He followed this up by removing Ex-Meggies spinner Nick White courtesy of a superb one handed diving catch from keeper Gary Cowlam in the sixth over as Frod struggled to 12-2. Morland (27) and James Pickersgill (20) then rallied to add 44 for the third wicket before Ellis snapped up Morland who edged to Kirby at second slip. This would be one of three catches to Kirby as Cleethorpes would produce a fine display in the field. With Matt Fowler (5) and Pickersgill both falling with the score on 63 Frod were struggling to set any kind of total as Alex Osmond claimed Fowler who was trapped in front while Pickersgill became Kirby’s second victim at slip to the bowling of Ellis. Day (17) and Dixon (12) added 24 for the sixth wicket until Dixon feathered a catch to James Osmond off Ellis to first slip. Watson (12) became Ellis’ fourth victim before Day completed Ellis’ five wicket haul in a marathon 20-over spell after edging behind. Nathan Judah came into the attack and quickly wrapped up the innings with2/8 in 3.4 overs but not before Powell (16 not out) and Hilton (12) had added a vital 24 for the final wicket. Ellis had been the stand out bowler for Cleethorpes with 5/52 with Harrison taking some late punishment to return 2/40 in eight overs.
Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond opened up for Cleethorpes and the pair had added a comfortable 23 before Osmond (7) tamely shovelled a Hilton log hop to mid off. Yaniv Judah came out in positive mode and some dispatched four boundaries before falling in similar vain as Fowler’s short ball was only helped back to the bowler for a return catch. This left Cleethorpes 61-2 with Kirby looking in fine touch. Cleethorpes Skipper James Osmond soon took to Frod Spinner Fowler and drove his first ball to the cover boundary. However having reached 15 young left armer David Pickersgill found his edge to the keeper to leave the home side 92-3. Alex Osmond joined Kirby as the pair went into their shell with Frod applying some late pressure. Kirby went to his first half century of the season in 76 balls while the hundred came up in the 25th over. Kirby (66) eventually departed to a catch behind off Watson with the score on 129 with the winning post in sight. Osmond eventually broke out of his shell to strike three boundaries in his 23 not out (70 balls) before Charlie Tomlinson (9 not out) came in to hit the winning runs for Cleethorpes in the 44th over to hand the home side a commanding victory.
