Luddington
visited North Lindsey Cricket League’s southernmost team on Sunday and returned with a
comfortable victory and a boost in their attempt to avoid relegation. Blyth
batted first and made quick progress before Jamie Arrowsmith bowled Bartolomew
Dalton in the fifth over with the score on 23. His opening partner Glyn Coxhill
was next out, caught behind off the bowling of Matthew Mellers for 26 which
included six fours. The home team’s run rate didn’t slacken and they reached
the drinks interval on 73 for the loss of only one further wicket, D Sung
caught in the slips by Danny Hilton off Arrowsmith.
Hilton
and Rick Green replaced the opening bowlers and were soon among the wickets,
each taking three – thanks in no small part to Mellers who held three catches.
Debutant Martin Davey took the catch to end Blyth’s innings on 109 which
included an astonishing 28 extras – 14 wides and 14 byes.
Luddington’s
response was even more positive. A new opening partnership of Hilton and Wayne
Mell found the pitch and bowling to their liking and both used a variety of
shots to put 50 on the scoreboard by the ninth over. Mell was out lbw for 24
with the score on 74 followed by Arrowsmith’s three-ball innings – dot, six,
caught. Andy Lawson became Tom Fisher’s third victim when he was bowled for 13
in the only maiden over of the Luddington innings. Hilton reached his fifty
with a four through backward square leg but watched helplessly as Andrew Clark
and Green departed for ducks from consecutive balls with Luddington only one
run behind.
Davey
came to the non-striker’s end to assist Hilton when he struck the winning runs
to finish on 62 not out, a glorious, chanceless innings and something on which
to build next week when Ludd visit Everton.
