Outcasts
closed the gap on Appleby-Frodingham 2nds in the race for promotion when they beat
the Steelmen by 68 runs at a sun drenched Hirst Priory on August 3rd although to
their credit Frod stubbornly dug in to prevent the Isle side from picking up a
maximum 20 points in a match sponsored by Ian Fletcher and son painters and
decorators.
Richard Wroot won the toss and quickly chose to bat but his
team were soon one down as Darren Clark was adjudged LBW to Liam Grimes without
troubling the scorers. Matthew Teal and opener Oliver Coulman then put together
a terrific stand of 67 with some outstanding shots , then a brilliant stumping
by Alex Grimes off Jack Harrison saw Teal out for a well constructed 31. John
Stokoe was next to the crease and he continued where Teal had left off as the
total raced past three figures. Coulman was batting serenely and brought up his
half century then lost concentration and lofted an easy catch to Simon Taylor at
deep mid on with the total on 117. Charlie Mason joined the impressive Stokoe
and they added 74 runs to take Outcasts close to 200 , Stokoe bringing up his
first half century despite having to utilise a runner due to a leg injury which
hampered his movement. Mason made 43 with an array of splendid shots then edged
a catch to the excellent Alex Grimes off Simon Leek then Stokoe was bowled by
Liam Grimes for 59 having guided his team past 200. Skipper Richard Wroot hit a
quickfire 16 as Frod picked up a flurry of late wickets which left the Priorymen
on 228 for 9 after 45 overs , Leek finishing with 3 for 47 and Liam Grimes 3 for
49.
The Frodingham innings got off to a poor start when Liam McAnaney
produced a jaffa to bowl the dangerous Simon Taylor who for once failed to
manage a run then Richard Wroot took a quite stunning one handed catch low to
his right off Jack Harrison who had scored 17 earning McAnaney his second wicket
of the match. At 29 for 2 Frod needed to rebuild and that is just what they did
as father and son pairing Vinny and Alex Grimes dug in. The Outcasts bowlers
were bowling with discipline and accuracy , particularly Matthew Teal and Craig
McAnaney which meant the visitors were slipping further behind the required run
rate then Teal trapped Alex infront of his stumps when he had made 28 leaving
the score at 85 for 3. Vinny soon followed his lad when he was caught by Peter
Tait off Teal for 37 then Reece Boddy was bowled by Teal and Frod had slumped to
88 for 5. Brothers Paul and John Taylor were at the crease and both used their
years of experience to blunt the Outcasts attack , setting about gleaning
batting points that could prove vital at the end of the season. They took the
total to 132 before Paul guided a Craig McAnaney delivery into wicket keeper
Wroot's hands having made 13 but by then the innings was drawing to a close and
Frod squeezed to 160 for 6 and three batting points in the final over , John
Taylor finishing on 45 not out and Liam Grimes on four, Matthew Teal being
Outcasts most successful bowler with 3 for 38 from 12 overs.
So Outcasts
moved to within 18 points of Frod with a game in hand but face the prospect of
having to change their team considerably as the forthcoming harvest period
hastens. They head to Heslam Park next to take on Scunthorpe Town 2nds whilst
Frod have two difficult games , home and away to run away leaders Broughton
looming large on the horizon
Outcasts 2nds' recent good run in division three came to a
shuddering halt when they were given a hefty defeat at Old Lincolnians , being
bowled out for just 65 before their opponents eased to their target for the loss
of just two wickets. Their next outing sees them head over to Barton on August
10th
