GOOLE GET BETTER OF STEELMEN

The first team friendly between Appleby-Frodingham Cricket Club (pictured above) and Goole Town at the Scunthorpe Steelmen's Brumby Hall venue on Sunday provided players on both sides with an opportunity to ease themselves into the new campaign.
Goole, skippered by Kevin Murphy, triumphed by four wickets against Matt Morland's team, chasing down 180 quite comfortably.
Neil Foster was in good all-round form for Goole, while spinner Matt Fowler bowled well for the home team.
But the match will be remembered for a superb piece of fielding by visiting skipper Murphy which resulted in an important run-out. Diving, he stopped the ball, turned while still on the ground and threw down the stumps with a direct hit from distance.
The very dry April weather and warm, sunny conditions made it seem more like June than the first competitive outing of the season for these two sides and the umpires - "yours truly" and Steve Bailey.
I was delighted to scoop £20 on the football name card fundraiser organised by Appleby-Frodingham at tea, but Goole might have been forgiven or thinking something amiss was going on when Frod spectator Vince Grimes nipped onto the field during a break in play and started handing cash to one of the umpires.
App-Frod: Morland, R. Powell, Fowler, Forrester, B Bramley, J Pickersgill, K Watson, J Dixon, Day, D Pickersgill.
Goole: Murphy, Lewis, Hicks, Sugden, Nottingham, Kerr, Mahoney, Lamb, Byron, Foster, Mann.
For the benefit of any Goole players/officials who have been directed here from the Goole People website, Lincs Cricket Latest carries regular scores, news, fixtures and tables from the Snaith District Evening League. So please keep watching as the season unfolds!
The App-Frod v Goole curtain-raiser seems to have become established now and we hope the weather again stays fine if there's a repeat fixture in April 2012.
