CHECK BEFORE YOU WATER GROUNDS

At last night's Lincolnshire County Cricket League pre-season meeting in Market Rasen, chairman Bob Welton (above) advised all clubs to check with their local water company before undertaking any watering of grounds, in view of the hosepipe ban.
Bob said it was much better to check with the company before watering than to undertake the task and discover some person, perhaps living nearby, had spotted what was going on and reported it to the authorities.
The chairman made reference to watering of sportsgrounds for health and safety reasons and pointed out to club delegates that Martin Deans, of the groundsmen's association, had posted online advice on the topic.

MONEY FOR OLD ROPE? Graham Hackney told the meeting that Cleethorpes CC now had a boundary rope available to any club that was interested.

CRIME VICTIMS: South Kelsey and Morton both reported suffering at the hands of unwanted visitors to their grounds. A sad sign of the times we live in!

RESULTS: "Yours truly" reminded clubs that it's still a requirement to call 01652 655134 after the game to report the scores on the doors. Just as important - the "year's grace" has now ended (no fines were imposed for online results last year as it was our first season in the digital age). Most clubs were efficient in 2011 so we don't expect many problems this time. But please ensure you stick to the deadlines applying to home and away matches, when it comes to supply information.

LEAGUE TABLES: Glen Sands will continue to compile Lincs League tables every Sunday and email them to clubs who've requested them. These also go to the local Press. Glen's tables will be the official tables. Play Cricket will generate its own, based on the points fed in, and all clubs are asked to check the online tables carefully and report to the league any errors spotted.  Come the end of the season, the league will be able to report on the accuracy of the online tables.

REGISTRATIONS: It's 10am Thursday 19th and I've just been into the management console of the Lincolnshire League's Play Cricket site and approved 20-plus further registrations. Please don't leave registrations to the very last minute. I recall being in London this time last year, taking a weekend family break, and having to log on to son-in-law's computer to deal with some player registrations that came through on the Saturday morning when the season began.

50th ANNIVERSARY: Having started in 1963, the Lincolnshire League is approaching its half-century and clubs were asked, some time ago, to come up with ideas on how they wanted the league to celebrate the major milestone. Not a single thought or observation was passed to the league, which chairman Bob said he found disappointing. He's now suggesting a month's further period of consultation. Ideas put forward "from the floor" last night included an exhibition of memorabilia/old pictures, a special game (perhaps including players of the past or a League Select X1) and a celebratory dinner.

More snippets to follow from the pre-season meeting when we get a minute!

    1. Be brave if you want to criticise and put your name to your comments .We've been using the Match Ball for some years with no complaints , I would suggest that your players need a crash course in how to look after a cricket ball and keep a good shine on it . Many teams get two full matches from the ball which equates to 90 overs so there can't be much wrong with it . WHAT AN INSULT TO OUR LEAGUE SPONSORS

  2. 50th anniversary celebration idea :
Twenty 20 tournament towards end of season. Each division to create representative side selected by league committee i.e. div 1 team v div 2 team or div 3 v div 4 etc or combination of players from different divisions selected by committee to form teams- big gala tournament to show off the talent in all divisions with most clubs represented by at least one player. Fundraising efforts with some donations to charity or to clubs making bids for some of the funds for facilities, investment in child development etc.

  3. What a very good idea , I'll be putting it forward to the Committee within the next few days together with the suggestions received through the official channels . I hope you will identify yourself , it really annoys me when anonymous messages appear particularly when they are criticising the League or it's elected Officers who put in a tremendous amount of effort on behalf of the Member Clubs . I'm not bothered for myself because as Chairman and having been involved since 1965 as a young player I've seen both Good and Bad times and I'm a big enough man to take criticisms on the chin and have NEVER hidden behind anonymity .

  4. 7's tournament or as AnonymousApr 19, 2012 09:05 AM, a 20/20 but possibly pitching teams together geographically (it may work)

On the note of balls, the standard does seem to have dropped over the past few years and whilst keeping the shine can be a problem , a number have become mishaped, seams splitting and the ball is a taking point for many teams in the league. Although it is amazing that it never gets brought up

This isnt a critisism of the committee but could possibly need addressing via an email to all clubs rather than plough on for ages at a meeting where the club secretary or representative may not be aware of any issues.

Maybe a "Crash Couse" on ball management is needed and surely the ball manufacturers can assist in advice on this and also on ball reconditioning for future games

    1. GAZ ,if any of your observations are true then all those with a problem should have brought it to any of our League Meetings or contacted me so that any problems could be resolved quickly . In the years that this ball has been the Standard Ball only NINE have been returned because of seam perforation {reasons why have been fully explained at meetings}and every one has been replaced FREE OF CHARGE . None have EVER been returned due to shape problems but if any had then they to would have been replaced FREE . If there were the problems you described it surely stands to reason that many more balls would have been returned . If Team captains are not informing their Club Secretaries of these ALLEGED problems how do you expect the League to know of them . AS STATED ALL BALLS {9} RETURNED UNDER COMPLAINT WERE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT CHARGE .Having run my own Sports shop for a number of years specialising in cricket I would be more than willing to visit your club and instruct your players in the upkeep and reconditioning of cricket balls and give advice on the care of cricket bats .

  5. Agree Gaz,

7s tournament would be a good idea, 50th anniversary of the league should involve as many teams and players as possible.

unless we did a scunthorpe and district, Lincoln and District Grimsby and District and East Lindsey and central lincolnshire teams 2020 tournament.

    1. There is already a successful 7s competition running in the Grimsby area , I would be more in favour of a 20twenty competition based at say two centres and a " SELECT " side from each geographical area playing a Challenge Final , monies raised to go to Cricket Charities such as the LORDS TAVENERS .
