BIG BROCK'S MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

By Ann Boulton

A seven-wicket haul for Lee Brocklebank, believed to be a Grimsby Town Knock Out record, saw trophy holders Messingham through to the semi-finals of the competition at the expense of Caistor.
Brocklebank’s first over – the fifth of the innings - brought three wickets, all caught by Donovan Deeble, while his second produced a triple wicket maiden. And at the end of his four eight-ball overs, Brocklebank’s figures were seven for 21.
Earlier, Deeble – Messingham’s overseas player - had hit 55 off 27 balls with three sixes and seven fours to help his side to 192 for seven. The Australian put on 40 for the first wicket with Tom McDougall, 30 for the second with Andy Langford and 36 for the third with Jason Scheepers who contributed 39 while Jason New was unbeaten on 20 at the close.
Caistor got off to a much steadier start but had 37 on the board when Deeble took his first catch off Brocklebank. Five runs later, the same combination took two more wickets and with the score on 50 for three, Brocklebank began his second over which ended with Caistor on 50 for six.
Luke Robinson and Lewis Jefferson steadied the ship, taking the total to 84 before Robinson became Brocklebank’s seventh victim and the lower order all contributed but the final wicket fell in the last over on 118.
Deeble had earlier been favourite for the man of the match but his batting and fielding was eclipsed by Brocklebank’s performance and it was the bowler who collected the award from Terry Smith of sponsors Humberside SAAB.
Messingham will now play the winners of next week’s game between Grimsby Town and Nettleham in the second semi-final on July 10th.
