VETERAN STILL GETTING "BUZZ" FROM CUP

By Glen Sands

FEATURED GAME
Barry "Buzzer" O'Brien (pictured) produced a real man-of-the-match performance yesterday as Luddington made a comeback of Lazarus proportions to beat Misterton 2nds and progress to the semi-finals of the North Lindsey League Third Division KO Cup.
Luddington were invited to bat first and quickly found themselves in dire trouble as Darren Emmingham and Mark Boscolo accounted for their first four batsmen with only 14 runs on the board. However, numbers five to eleven stepped up the plate with no less than five of them reaching double figures, despite being interupted twice by sharp showers, Kristian Reed hitting 17, Steve Proctor 13, Arron Curry 11, Matty Mellers 14 and the impressive O'Brien 15 not out, including one cover drive to the boundary that was right out of the Geoff Boycott book of coaching!
Luddington eventually ended their innings on 108 all-out, an incredible 20 of which came from the visitors bowling wides - an indiscipline that ulitmately cost them the game, although Emmingham, Mark and Matt Boscolo and M Denman each picked up two wickets.
Misterton's reply saw them appear to be cruising to victory until "Buzzer" and Arron Curry came on to bowl and between them they turned the game on its head. Matt Mellers bowled well, taking 2 for 27 from his statutory 10 overs, but it was O'Brien's dismissal of Emmingham when the impressive opener had reached 42 and the score stood at 66 that changed the whole direction of proceedings, Kristian Reed taking an excellent catch to send Emmingham back to the pavilion. Misterton still had their in-form number four Tim Sharpe at the crease but sadly for them he gifted a simple return catch to Arron Curry with the total on 72, and with a further 37 required to clinch what looked earlier to be a relatively comfortable win suddenly matters had taken a different course. In a complete reversal of how things had gone in the Luddington innings, Misterton's tail failed to wag at all and the evergreen O'Brien, along with Curry, went through them like a knife through butter, the Old Goole Warhorse taking an impressive 5 for 30 and Curry a splendid 3 for 7 to reduce the visitors to 88 all-out and send Luddington through to a semi-final trip to Everton 3rds on June 20th
It has to be said that this was a real topsy-turvy match with Luddington appearing down and out when standing at 14 for 4 and also when Misterton had eased to 66 for 2 but the never-say-die attitude shown by the Isle side, along with the 20 wides given away by the visitors, saw something of a Houdini-like comeback which was led by O'Brien who quite rightly took the acclaim afforded him from everyone at the ground. Who knows what further exploits are to come from this veteran of the game?

NORTH LINDSEY LEAGUE DIVISION ONE KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Cameron Fletcher hit a spectacular 129 not out for Messingham 3rds against cup holders Cleethorpes 5ths yesterdy Sunday as they posted a formidable 246 for two against the Meggies, Richard Dannatt scoring 60 and Matt Lawson 45 in the large total. And despite 75 from in-form Patrick Hughes, Cleethorpes were bowled out for 140, Sheldon Sekul taking 4 for 22 for the victors, earning them a visit to Barton Town 3rds on June 20th. Scunthorpe Town 4ths won a thriller at Heslam Park, where Appleby-Frodingham 3rds scored 163 all-out thanks chiefly to a half-century from Paul Hilton (53 not out), but Town gained a three-wicket victory with 51 from Ian Snowden and 26 not out from Umar Gondall, which means they will entertain Marshalls Sports or Caistor Cougars who were unable to play due to a wet wicket in Gainsborough.

DIVISION TWO KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Outcasts 3rds won a quite thrilling game at Brigg Rec, where the home club posted a 187 all-out, Dan Dewfall hitting 39 and Jack Siddall 31, as Alex Fletcher picked up 3 for 30. then Jamie Belton replied with 84 not out and Oliver Coulman 40 as the Isle of Axholme side won from the very last ball off the game, earning them a home tie against Grimsby Town 3rds on June 20th. Grimsby eased to a 72-run victory over Hibaldstow 2nds at Augusta Street, Maddocks hitting 93 for Grimsby who totalled 193 for 5 before Hibaldstow were bowled out for 121, Jon Taylor top scoring with 27, while Richard Evans took 3 for 17 for Town. Nick Dobbs hit 83 not out as Broughton 3rds beat Alkborough 3rds by just two wickets, reaching 150 for 8 after Alkborough managed 148 all-out. That means Broughton 3rds will host Haxey 3rds on June 20th after Wheatley & Leverton were unable to field a team to play them last week.

DIVISION THREE KO CUP FIRST ROUND
Luddington will travel to Everton 3rds in the semi-finals as they were awarded their tie against Epworth who were unable to raise a team. Jeremy Evans guided his young Barton Vikings to a hefty 79-run win over Bottesford, the skipper hitting 71 not out, along with 61 from Tom Palin before Bottesford were bowled out for 140, Dave Kilgallon scoring 52 and Matt Baxter 50, while Andy "Teggy" Tester took 5 for 34. Barton will now travel to Upton-cumKexby on June 20th.
