BRIGG GEARING UP FOR WEEKEND CLEAN-UP: CAN YOU SPARE AN HOUR OR TWO?

Brigg people seem to be in the mood to give a bit of their time to help tidy up parts of the town.
There's a communal clean-up session planned for Saturday, March 5. Meet at the Bandstand, in the Market Place at 10am.
Further to our earlier posts on this topic, we need to stress that materials will be provided. All you need to do is turn up in suitable clothing for the task ahead.
Ours is a pretty tidy town, but there are areas that North Lincolnshire Council can't cover as part of its routine cleaning operations.
Brigg Town Council and Brigg Town Business Partnership are involving in organising the March 5 event.
However, further tidying, involving the Women's Institute, will take place on Friday, March 4. And we gather there could be some more undertaken on Sunday, March 7.
North Lincolnshire Council, the unitary authority, tells us that community groups across the district are now gearing up, ready for the big clean-up weekend, as part of the Clean for The Queen campaign.
This is a nationwide initiative connected with Her Majesty's 90th birthday this year.
North Lincolnshire Council is supporting this campaign and encouraging local people and community groups to rally together. So far 16 community groups have signed up to take part in the big clean-up and more are expected to come forward.
There will be litter-picking in Scunthorpe, Messingham, Brigg, Belton, Worlaby, Bonby, Barton and Saxby  "just to name a few."
Interested residents and community groups can still get involved. Even if you can’t make the big clean-up weekend, you can arrange your own clean-up.
If you would like to take part, contact neighbourhood services on 01724 297775 or email neighbourhoodservices@northlincs.gov.uk. They can also offer support and advice; this includes everything from removing the rubbish you have collected to providing the litter picking equipment.
To take part in Clean for The Queen, please also register online at www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk where you can download the Clean for the Queen Guide, as well as advice and tips about how to join a group or to simply do your bit.
This campaign has been launched by Country Life magazine in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy to clear up Britain in time for The Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016.
The Queen is keen to get the ball rolling on what could be the UK’s largest clean-up operation in history.
The aim is to inspire a million people to take action and enjoy a few hours together litter picking to make the places where they live more enjoyable and instil a sense of pride in their communities.
An army of volunteers across the country will come together to clean up their local areas, which includes the special clean-up weekend from 4 to 6 March 2016.
All the litter charities across the country have come together to support the campaign. Also, a growing range of companies, land managers and associations and councils are now signing up to support it, including North Lincolnshire Council.
The council has agreed to co-ordinate the local events to ensure that activities are programmed into the national events. Officers have engaged with community groups, schools, charities and town and parish councils.
If every adult picked up just one piece of litter and put it in a bin, that would be more than 50 million pieces of rubbish disposed of. Imagine if everyone picked up at least one piece of litter every day for the next nine months.
"We can do it. We can all Clean for The Queen," says council spokeswoman Kirsty Westfield.
Coun Neil Poole, from Messingham, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire Council and Ridge Ward representative for the area including Scawby, said: “The council already supports various clean-up initiatives but this is set to be something quite spectacular as whole communities will come together across the country to take part in what is expected to be the biggest clean-up of all time.
“We already have 16 community groups taking part and we are working with other groups to get them involved. It is set to be a fantastic weekend that will highlight the brilliant community spirit we have in North Lincolnshire.
“Any community groups or people in North Lincolnshire that would like to take part, or organise a big clean-up, you still have time to get involved. Get in touch with us and we will help in any way we can."
Brigg Town Council usually undertakes a Spring clean in May (see picture above from 2013), but for 2016 that event is being combined with the tidy up next weekend.

FORMER ENGLAND BATSMAN DENNIS AMISS TO BE GUEST OF LINCOLNSHIRE CRICKET LOVERS AT CLEETHORPES MEETING

A cricketing legend who has enjoyed more than 50 years in the game is the guest at the December meeting of the Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society, writes ANN BOULTON.
Dennis Amiss MBE will be at Cleethorpes Cricket Club on December 11 to talk about his long career as a player and later as an administrator.
The former Warwickshire and England batsman scored more than 43,000 runs and is one of the few batsmen to have score 100 first class centuries, a feat he achieved in 1986
As an England player, he hit an unbeaten 262 against the West Indies in the 1973-74 test series and followed it up with 206 at the Oval in 1976 against an attack that included Michael Holding and Andy Roberts.
In the early days of limited over cricket, he also became the first batsman to hit a century in One Day Internationals. Amiss went on to become CEO of Warwickshire and deputy chairman of the ECB before retiring in 2011.

The evening begins at 7.30pm and is free to Society members and £5 for guests.

LINCOLNSHIRE CRICKET LOVERS’ SOCIETY

The next meeting of the Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society focuses on a topical theme – the First World War.
Current 100th anniversary commemorations coincide with the visit of author Brian Halford whose 11 years of research have unearthed and explored the identity of the man who was the inspiration behind the P G Wodehouse character Jeeves.
Born in Dewsbury and brought up in Goole, bowler Percy Jeeves played 50 games for Warwickshire and was on the verge of the England team when World War 1 intervened.
Halford’s book The Real Jeeves explores the player’s life before and during the conflict and reveals how Wodehouse modelled his character on Percy Jeeves after seeing him play in a county match.
Coincidentally, the foreword to the book is provided by Dennis Amiss, who will be the speaker at the Cricket Lovers’ Society December meeting.

Brian Halford will be at Cleethorpes Cricket Club on Thursday, November 13.  The evening starts at 7.30pm and is free to Society members and £5 for guests.

SEPTEMBER 20 SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER CRICKET LEAGUE

SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER LEAGUE

September 20th

Just one game remains in the South Lincolnshire & Border League’s 2014 season when Division Two’s Burgh & District take on Belton Park 2nd next weekend.
In the Premier Division Welby finished on a high note with a four wicket win over Long Sutton but were unable to overhaul Stamford Town to lift themselves out of the bottom two.
But Moulton Harrox made it into the top six after a poor start to the season with a five wicket win over Sleaford 2nd.
The Division One championship went right to the wire with Grantham 2nd emulating their first team to finish top with Spalding 2nd 15 points behind in second place.
Danny Bates ended his season with a flourish, hitting an unbeaten 113 in Grantham’s victory over Woodlands but Simon Jukes missed out on his century, falling for 93 in Spalding’s game against Long Sutton which had to be abandoned because of bad light with a handful of overs remaining.
Chris King made the highest total of the day with 176 not out and Shane George took six wickets as Billingborough 2nd beat Baston to finish third in the division.
Lindum 3rd secured the Division Two title with a win over Belton Park 2nd, with Freiston taking second place despite going down to Boston 3rd.  Four bowlers claimed five wicket hauls in this division, Zakir Gatta of Freiston, Boston 3rd’s Steve Appleyard, Carl Lamming of Pinchbeck and Tony Beardsley whose five for 30 helped Burgh & District to a victory that kept them out of the bottom two.

RENOWNED UMPIRE PETER DOUCE RETIRES

Peter Douce, of the Scunthorpe and District Umpires' Association, seen at the end of his last game before retiring, aged 80,  having joined the panel 33 seasons ago. It was taken on Sunday (Sept 14) when Broughton 2nds hosted Caistor 3rds in the final Lincolnshire County Cricket League division four game of the 2014 season.
It was a memorable match, with Russ Blackburn, of Broughton, hitting seven sixes and taking 28 runs of an over. His side, batting second, needed only 96 to win and Russ got the bulk of them.
Lincolnshire League chairman Bob Welton was at the game and kindly took this picture to mark the end of Peter's lengthy career.

SEPTEMBER 13 SOUTH LINCS AND BORDER CRICKET LEAGUE

SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER LEAGUE

Results, September 13

Grantham were crowned South Lincolnshire & Border League champions without facing a ball after Skegness 2nd were forced to concede their game due to lack of players.
This gave Grantham 20 points which meant that, despite Boston also gaining 20 against Stamford, the leaders could not be caught.
Lindum Ramblers finished third after a slender two wicket win over Bourne 2nd who claimed fourth place.
But the tightest game of the day was at Sleaford where the visitors were Welby.  Simon Godby hit 69 and Phil Sneath 51 as the home side finished on 228 for eight.  Darren Bradbury then made 58 to help Welby towards their target but Godby ended a good day by dismissing three of the visitors’ lower order for ducks to give him five for 50 and Welby were all out just three runs short of the Sleaford total.
Rob Bee was the division’s only centurion, making 115 in Woodhall Spa 2nd’s win over Long Sutton and Belton Park ended their season with victory over Moulton Harrox.
The top of Division One is still in the melting pot, Market Deeping 2nd missing the chance to consolidate top place after going down to Cavaliers by 13 runs and Billingborough 2nd also losing out to Long Sutton 2nd.
Grantham 2nd moved to the top with a win over Heckington in which Oliver Clawson scored the day’s second ton, finishing 100 not out.  And Spalding 2nd kept their hopes of promotion alive with a win over Boston 2nd.  Grantham, Spalding and Billingborough each have one game to play this weekend while Deeping have completed their season.
At the bottom of the table, Long Sutton 2nd, Friskney and Baston also have one game to play as they fight to avoid finishing in the bottom two.
Frieston and Lindum 3rd continue to dominate Division Two, Lindum currently nine points ahead of their rivals, each with a game to play.  Five of Freiston’s players fell victim to Grantham 3rd’s up and coming 19 year old Charlotte Cross but Darren Tate took six for Freiston to help them to a comfortable win.
