The next
meeting of the Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society focuses on a topical theme
– the First World War.
Current 100th
anniversary commemorations coincide with the visit of author Brian Halford
whose 11 years of research have unearthed and explored the identity of the man
who was the inspiration behind the P G Wodehouse character Jeeves.
Born in
Dewsbury and brought up in Goole, bowler Percy Jeeves played 50 games for
Warwickshire and was on the verge of the England team when World War 1 intervened.
Halford’s
book The Real Jeeves explores the
player’s life before and during the conflict and reveals how Wodehouse modelled
his character on Percy Jeeves after seeing him play in a county match.
Coincidentally,
the foreword to the book is provided by Dennis Amiss, who will be the speaker
at the Cricket Lovers’ Society December meeting.
Brian
Halford will be at Cleethorpes Cricket Club on Thursday, November 13. The evening starts at 7.30pm and is free to
Society members and £5 for guests.
