SEPTEMBER 20 SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER CRICKET LEAGUE

SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER LEAGUE

September 20th

Just one game remains in the South Lincolnshire & Border League’s 2014 season when Division Two’s Burgh & District take on Belton Park 2nd next weekend.
In the Premier Division Welby finished on a high note with a four wicket win over Long Sutton but were unable to overhaul Stamford Town to lift themselves out of the bottom two.
But Moulton Harrox made it into the top six after a poor start to the season with a five wicket win over Sleaford 2nd.
The Division One championship went right to the wire with Grantham 2nd emulating their first team to finish top with Spalding 2nd 15 points behind in second place.
Danny Bates ended his season with a flourish, hitting an unbeaten 113 in Grantham’s victory over Woodlands but Simon Jukes missed out on his century, falling for 93 in Spalding’s game against Long Sutton which had to be abandoned because of bad light with a handful of overs remaining.
Chris King made the highest total of the day with 176 not out and Shane George took six wickets as Billingborough 2nd beat Baston to finish third in the division.
Lindum 3rd secured the Division Two title with a win over Belton Park 2nd, with Freiston taking second place despite going down to Boston 3rd.  Four bowlers claimed five wicket hauls in this division, Zakir Gatta of Freiston, Boston 3rd’s Steve Appleyard, Carl Lamming of Pinchbeck and Tony Beardsley whose five for 30 helped Burgh & District to a victory that kept them out of the bottom two.

RENOWNED UMPIRE PETER DOUCE RETIRES

Peter Douce, of the Scunthorpe and District Umpires' Association, seen at the end of his last game before retiring, aged 80,  having joined the panel 33 seasons ago. It was taken on Sunday (Sept 14) when Broughton 2nds hosted Caistor 3rds in the final Lincolnshire County Cricket League division four game of the 2014 season.
It was a memorable match, with Russ Blackburn, of Broughton, hitting seven sixes and taking 28 runs of an over. His side, batting second, needed only 96 to win and Russ got the bulk of them.
Lincolnshire League chairman Bob Welton was at the game and kindly took this picture to mark the end of Peter's lengthy career.

SEPTEMBER 13 SOUTH LINCS AND BORDER CRICKET LEAGUE

SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER LEAGUE

Results, September 13

Grantham were crowned South Lincolnshire & Border League champions without facing a ball after Skegness 2nd were forced to concede their game due to lack of players.
This gave Grantham 20 points which meant that, despite Boston also gaining 20 against Stamford, the leaders could not be caught.
Lindum Ramblers finished third after a slender two wicket win over Bourne 2nd who claimed fourth place.
But the tightest game of the day was at Sleaford where the visitors were Welby.  Simon Godby hit 69 and Phil Sneath 51 as the home side finished on 228 for eight.  Darren Bradbury then made 58 to help Welby towards their target but Godby ended a good day by dismissing three of the visitors’ lower order for ducks to give him five for 50 and Welby were all out just three runs short of the Sleaford total.
Rob Bee was the division’s only centurion, making 115 in Woodhall Spa 2nd’s win over Long Sutton and Belton Park ended their season with victory over Moulton Harrox.
The top of Division One is still in the melting pot, Market Deeping 2nd missing the chance to consolidate top place after going down to Cavaliers by 13 runs and Billingborough 2nd also losing out to Long Sutton 2nd.
Grantham 2nd moved to the top with a win over Heckington in which Oliver Clawson scored the day’s second ton, finishing 100 not out.  And Spalding 2nd kept their hopes of promotion alive with a win over Boston 2nd.  Grantham, Spalding and Billingborough each have one game to play this weekend while Deeping have completed their season.
At the bottom of the table, Long Sutton 2nd, Friskney and Baston also have one game to play as they fight to avoid finishing in the bottom two.
Frieston and Lindum 3rd continue to dominate Division Two, Lindum currently nine points ahead of their rivals, each with a game to play.  Five of Freiston’s players fell victim to Grantham 3rd’s up and coming 19 year old Charlotte Cross but Darren Tate took six for Freiston to help them to a comfortable win.

HORNCASTLE V OUTCASTS - LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

Outcasts ended their best ever season in the Lincolnshire League with an exciting win at Horncastle which ensured they finished in third place, which is their highest ever finish, WRITES GLEN SANDS.
They travelled across the county to Horncastle with only ten men and were dismissed for 86 by a team who's fate was already sealed and it was Graham Clark who held the innings together with a battling 44. Andrew Lawson made a quickfire 18 before being the first to fall , well caught by Ben Wilkinson off Brody Willerton then Scott Buttrick was adjudged LBW to Harry Smith with the score standing at 26. Danny Hilton was next to go , caught by wicket keeper Ross Dixon off Willerton and without a further run added Jack Lupton was back in the pavilion leaving Outcasts on 32 for 4. Skipper Liam McAnaney , in at number six when normally he bats at nine or ten joined his cousin Graham Clark but he was the third to go LBW having made just a single and that meant the Isle side were standing at 39 with over half their men gone. Danny Taylor hung around as Clark began to push the score along and they had taken the total to 55 when Taylor was caught by a diving Kelsey off Harry Smith. Graeme Fletcher was another who supported Clark well , taking several blows as Horncastle fought hard to dismiss him and he was able to help Clark move the score to 70 before edging a catch to Dixon off Paul Wood. Clark was approaching what would have been a richly deserved half century when he was out stumped , over balancing to a delivery from Wood when having reached 44 then the innings was brought to a close when Connoe r Webb was run out leaving the total at 86 , Brody Willerton taking 3 for 29 , Harry Smith 3 for 33 and Paul Wood 2 for 11.
For Outcasts to have any hope of winning the game they needed to make early in roads and that was just what they did as Graeme Fletcher had Nick Paige caught by wicket keeper Danny Hilton for nought then Liam McAnaney produced a beauty to bowl Harry Smith for four. Fletcher then bowled number three batsman Kelsey with the total on 15 and with a further ten runs on the board McAnaney hit the stumps again to send Ben Wilkinson back to the hutch. Tom Johnson hit seven then hit a catch to Danny Taylor off Fletcher with the overall score on 34 then Hilton caught number four batsman Nick Hill for ten to give Fletcher his fourth wicket and the Isle side were looking capable of gaining an unlikely win. Ross Dixon and Jim Watters then put together a stand of twelve before the latter was superbly caught by Jack Lupton off Fletcher again for 10 , a catch that swung the game back into the balance then Brody Willerton skied a catch for Hilton to take his third catch which brought Joe Smith to the crease to join Dixon who was showing all his experience in such a tight match. They took the total to 72 and appeared to be on their way to victory when spin bowler Scott Buttrick trapped Smith LBW for five which left the visitors seeking one more wicket to win but another " old head " in the guise of Paul Wood strode to the middle and along with Dixon the Lincoln club moved to within one blow of victory. It was at this point that 14 year old Adam Wroot produced a fantastic piece of fielding when Dixon blazed the ball at him , a stop that just about clinched the win for Outcasts because the same man was then caught behind off Liam McAnaney having made 20 , leaving the home side tantalisingly four runs short of the Outcasts target.
So the season ended with Outcasts having achieved their best placing , just one spot away from stepping up into the Premier Division. The second eleven were awarded the points against South Kelsey in Division Three who were unable to field a team to travel to Hirst Priory but it was all to no avail as Old Lincolnians beat Cleethorpes to wrap up the second promotion spot. Despite that disappointment it has been an outstanding season for the club as a whole and they will all meet at the ground to celebrate a successful 2014 at the ground on September 27th for a hog roast and to hand out the awards to the club members who have achieved so much during the summer.

BRACEBRIDGE HEATH CRICKET CLUB A NATIONAL GRASSROOTS WINNER

SEPTEMBER 13 ROUND-UP - READERS LINCOLNSHIRE ECB PREMIER CRICKET LEAGUE

BY ANN BOULTON

The final weekend of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League weekend saw Bourne crowned champions – and Tim McIntosh break two records.
And Market Rasen finished the season on a high note, bowling Grimsby out for 127 and going on to win by seven wickets to consign fellow league newcomers Billingborough, who lost to Woodhall Spa, to bottom place.
Sleaford’s former New Zealand international hit 140 to take his total runs for the season to 1323, smashing his own 2013 record by 120.  And together with Andy Hibberd, who hit 107, McIntosh topped the league’s third wicket partnership, taking it from 251 to 269.
This record was set in 2001, coincidentally by Mohammed Haroon and John McDougall playing for Sleaford’s opponents, Market Deeping.
Playing at Deeping, Sleaford finished on 310 for five, before David Sergeant became the third centurion of the match with 129 off 133 balls as the home side’s reply ended on 236.
The top of the table clash between Bourne and Lindum proved to be as tense and hard fought as predicted.  Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Lindum needed to take all 10 wickets to be in with a chance of claiming the title.
The first fell with just seven on the board and the second on 48 but a stand of 92 between Conrad Louth, who hit a painstaking 49, and Pete Morgan (45) put paid to Lindum’s hopes, the visitors finishing on 178 for five.
Will Wright and Will Taylor set off in pursuit at T20 pace, Wright hitting 36 off 30 balls before falling to Jack Berry with the score on 72. Taylor made 46 off 36 balls but from here the rate slowed as Lindum moved more steadily towards their target, victory coming in the 30th over by just two wickets.
In addition to their runners-up trophy, Lindum can celebrate two more awards.  Jonathan Miller’s 62 wickets make him the season’s top wicket taker while Richard Bishop is the winning wicketkeeper with 35 dismissals.
Bourne’s victory gave them the title by eight points with Bracebridge Heath finishing third after passing Spalding’s low score of 112 for the loss of one wicket, Brett McGlade claiming five victims and Paul Cook hitting an unbeaaten 68.
Sleaford finished fourth and Woodhall Spa fifth, Malinga Bandara once more the man of the match with five wickets and 52 runs.  Billingborough made a respectable 206, Chris Morris with 77, but Bandara and Sam Evison with 54 helped Woodhall to a seven wicket win.
After a poor start to the season, Skegness finished a creditable sixth, skipper Norman Brackley ending the season with an innings of 147 in his side’s 276 for six against Louth who made 227 for three, John Medler hitting 81, Laurence Scott 65 and Tom Corden an unbeaten 57.
