ORDER YOUR DINNER TICKETS NOW

From Colin Kennedy and Bob Welton, League Chairmen

Jeff Evans, First Class Umpire, will be the guest speaker at the joint annual dinner and presentation evening of the John Pettit Grimsby & District Cricket League and the Lincolnshire County Cricket League. It will be held at McMenemy’s, Blundell Park, Cleethorpes (home of Grimsby Town FC), on Thursday, March 17th, at 7.30pm.
As chairmen of our respective leagues, we hope that every club will be represented, and not only those who are to receive trophies. The officials of both leagues have agreed that the proceedings should ‘broadly’ follow last year’s event.
This time it is the turn of the John Pettit Grimsby & District Cricket League to host the dinner. Howard Swain (Cleethorpes CC), will propose a toast to ‘the guests’, to which there will be no response.
It is our custom to invite our final speaker to propose a toast to ‘the game of cricket’. We are delighted to inform you that Jeff Evans, First Class Umpire, has accepted our invitation to entertain you. The toastmaster will be Steve Metham, president of the Grimsby & District League.
Due to an increase in food prices we have had to increase the ticket price to £25 with a silver service menu. The bar will open at 6.45pm, but will close during the speeches.
Early application by clubs and league officials should be made to assistant treasurer Mick Barton using the enclosed form, no later than February 28th, 2011. No tickets will be allocated before this date and any remaining after it will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Ticket money may be refunded up to Saturday, March 12th, 2011.
Ticket sales will be limited to a maximum of 200. All cheques should be made payable to Grimsby & District Cricket League. No tickets will be issued until payment has been received. This is a strict rule and there can be no complaint by your club if requests are not received in time, with the necessary payment, and thus are not considered. It follows therefore, that the assistant treasurer will not be available to receive money on the evening of the dinner, as we feel that all our officials should be free to enjoy the evening.
Again this year we are addressing the embarrassment of trophy winners being absent. Clubs are asked to arrange for a substitute to provide cover, to enable the presentation to run smoothly. Could we also remind all teams that trophies must be returned to Gradely Sports, Corporation Road, Grimsby, immediately.
We thank you for your work for cricket in general, and in particular our two leagues.

FASCINATING FOR GROUNDSMEN

By Martin Deans

The Lincs cricket Groundsmen association begins its early spring meetings on Wednesday 16th February with one of the most high profile Groundsmen in the public spotlight at present coming to the Lindum Club in Lincoln. Keith Exton, the Grounds manager at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff, has very kindly agreed to come and speak of his experiences of looking after a high profile and at times a controversial test match venue. He will be sharing with us his moment in the media circus when the 1st Ashes test of the last home series began at the swalic and the issues that have surrounded it since. It will be a fascinating evening and one not to be missed by all those connected to the ground industry. The evening will start at 7.30pm and costs £5 to non members. Any further details can be obtained through Martin Deans on 07971087891 or martindeans@btinternet.com

CHANGE OF DATE FOR LOVERS

By Ann Boulton

In a change of date from the published programme, the next Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society evening takes place on Wednesday, 16 February at Cleethorpes Cricket Club.
Confessions of a Cricketing Parson is the title of the talk by Rev Canon Alan Haydock whose has a reputation for having his audiences “rolling in the aisles”.
A member of the committee of Nottinghamshire CCC – whose captain Chris Read has been heard to recommend that listeners fasten their seat belts - Canon Haydock is also an honorary Canon of Southwark Minster and a supporter of both of Nottingham’s football league clubs.
He speaks very humorously about his role on the Nottinghamshire committee and his dealings with some of the famous personalities within the club, including Derek Randall.
Over the past 21 years, Canon Haydock has donated his speaking fees to many worthy causes and so far has raised more than £50,000.
The evening begins at 7.30pm and is free for members and £5 for guests.

MEMORABLE MOMENT

By Gary Smith, long-serving Brigg Town opening batsman

Can you remember when several stray cows were seen running up and down the lane above the playing field at Haxey when Brigg Town CC were playing there? During play two rather large Friesians came charging across the outfield chased by a local farmer towards the car park where Mr and Mrs Willerton were watching ‘our Martin'. Mrs Willerton made a hasty retreat to the car and didn’t emerge from there for the rest of the game.

NF adds: Yes, I remember this incident well. It went down in Brigg Town CC folklore.

BOWLER TAKES GUARD

Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society
From Ann Boulton

Peter Bowler - described as one of the best players never to play Test cricket - is the Lincolnshire Cricket Lovers’ Society’s first guest speaker of 2011.
Peter spent twenty years on the professional cricket circuit, making his debut for Leicestershire in 1986. He went on to represent Derbyshire, Tasmania and ultimately Somerset, scoring just under 20,000 runs in first-class cricket with 45 hundreds.
He was England's top run scorer in 1992 and retired at the end of the 2004 season aged 41 to take up a career in corporate law and now works as a legal consultant.
He is also an accomplished after dinner speaker, recalling his career, and the many humorous experiences both on and off the field, having played with and against some of the game's greatest players and characters.
Peter will be speaking at Cleethorpes Cricket Club on Wednesday, January 12. The evening begins at 7.30pm and is free for Society members and £5 for guests.
