During yesterday's Lincolnshire League division one game at Heslam Park, a no-ball was called against Scunthorpe Town for a fielder encroaching on the pitch. His foot, while at silly mid-on, was adjudged to have been just on the cut part of the track.
Very rare, that one. I can't remember encountering it before as player or umpire, over the past 35 years in club cricket.
"Three behind square" you might see result in a no-ball perhaps once or twice a season. But encroachment is very unusual.
There's a nice photo in the umpires' "bible" - penned by Tom Smith - showing a player at silly mid-on with his foot on the cut part of the strip. That's exactly how it happened yesterday in Town's game against Alkborough 2nds.
Very much one for the umpiring anoraks!
