FIVE RUN-OUTS SO COSTLY FOR CAISTOR COUGARS

Appleby-Frodingham won a thrilling North Lindsey Cricket League Division One Knockout Cup semi-final against Caistor Cougars at Brumby Hall.
The Cougars slumped from 188 for two to 215 all-out when chasing Frod's impressive target of 219 for six in a game played for three league points as well as a final berth.
Tony Manning hit 76, Kieran Watson 53 and Jack Dixon 43 for the Steelmen.
But Harry Boulton's 58 and Liam Wood's 56 looked to have the Cougars on target until five run-outs cost them dearly and Frod squeezed their way to a terrific win.
The Steelmen will meet Scunthorpe 4ths or Barton Academy Vikings in the final on August 19 at Alkborough.

Then Fred Balderson scored 47 and Dave Kilgallon 28 as Alkborough replied with 157 for 7 to see their team climb into joint second spot.

Alex Shreeve hit 55 not out while Danny Bullock continued his current good form with the ball by picking up 4 for 19 for the Isle side.
There was a real man of the match performance from Paul Sunley for Cleethorpes at Misterton.
He hit 95 in the Meggies' 215 for 8 and then took 5 for 21 as Misterton were bowled out for 161, Darren Emmingham scoring 62 after team-mate Tim Beecroft had earlier taken 3 for 40 in the Cleethorpes innings.

The exciting game between Broughton and Everton ended in a tie.
Robbie Glentworth hit 83 and Neil Simpson 55 (batting at number eight) for Broughton who finished on 194 for eight. But Everton battled superbly to gain two valuable points in their quest to overhaul Luddington at the top of the table.
Upton cum Kexby beat Normanby Park in another high scoring game, Shaun Metcalf hitting 54 not out and Mark Green 50 for Kexby who set a target of 214 for 3 before Paul Cowling made them sweat as he hit a classy 90 not out in Normanby's response of 179 all out, Ben Alsop taking 4 for 19 to help his team clinch victory.

BY ANN BOULTON

Defeats for Skegness and Woodhall Spa and wins for Haxey and Bracebridge Heath left the top of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League table wide open once again.
Skegness’ lead was cut to seven points after a devastating spell from Jon Darke saw the Bracebridge Heath bowler take six wickets for just two runs and reduce the seasiders from 74 for two to 76 for eight.
Darke finished with six for 26 as Skegness were all out for 119 chasing their opponents’ total of 198 for seven of which Brett Houston hit 57.
Woodhall went down to a resurgent Lindum side who made it three wins in successive weeks.  Dan Hegarty, newly transferred from Boston, hit an unbeaten 60 for Woodhall but Karanjit Bansal’s five for 46 restricted the home side to 159 for eight.  Bansal then made an unbeaten 82 and George Neal was 52 not out as Lindum claimed a nine wicket win.
Graeme Attenborough made the highest individual score of the day with an unbeaten 132 – his first century in the Lincs Premier League - to take Haxey to a seven wicket victory at home to Bourne who finished on 214 for nine, Conrad Louth with 75.  Attenborough’s total came off 140 balls with 15 fours and four sixes.
Boston made it two wins in a row to open up a gap over bottom side Hartsholme who went down to Sleaford.
Mayflower skipper Tom Baxter took five for 23 as Market Deeping were held to 157 for seven and Jonathan Cheer then made the day’s second century, his unbeaten 106 – which came off 90 balls with 16 fours and two sixes - seeing Boston to a nine wicket win.  Cheer now needs just 12 runs to reach 500 for the season.
Hartsholme, meanwhile, reached 203 for nine at home to Sleaford, of which Henry Rush hit 80 not out.  But Oliver Burford then made 52 to help his team to a three wicket victory.
The closest game of the day was at Louth where Harry Warwick’s unbeaten 90 contributed to Grimsby’s score of 207 all out.  Stewart West hit 62 for the home side but the final wicket fell 18 short of the target.

RESULTS
Market Deeping 157-7 (Baxter 5-23), Boston 161-1 (J Cheer 106no);

RETURN OF THE GOOD OLD-FASHIONED CLUB FRIENDLY

BY GLEN SANDS

With neither Outcasts side having a fixture on Saturday, several players gathered at their Hirst Priory ground for a " friendly " match after which they struck up the barbie for a player/family gathering on what was a dry and at times sunny afternoon.
First team skipper Russell Fletcher and his father Ian, captain of the seconds, chose their teams from the players who attended with Ian's team batting first in a 20 / 20 match. Anthony Fitzgerald and Mark Coulman opened for Ian's side and they made a fantastic start , putting on 80 for the first wicket with some exceptional shots before the latter was bowled by Darren Clark for 35 , the Luddington suddenly proving to have a second string to his bow as well as beigan opening batsman ! It was'nt long before he had picked up a second wicket when Charlie Mason was caught in the deep by Russell Fletcher for five then Fitzgerald was stumped by Mark Fletcher  having made 39 when charging down the wicket to Clark only to miss the ball completely. That left Ian's team on 93 for 3 with Andy Colebrook and Jason Whiteley at the crease but they were'nt there for long as poor old Jason was " stuffed " by Coey when a yes  interlude resulted in a woeful run out instigated by the sorrowful Colebrook. Next to the middle was Andy Torr , no stranger to woeful run outs himself in the past and true to form the running between the wickets was eventful to say the least. Amazingly they seemed to cancel each other out in terms of their judging of runs and they had moved the total on to 146 before Colebrook was stumped by Mark Fletcher off Matt Wilkinson for an impressive 29 the veteran wicket keeper having been particularly severe off the bowling of Andy Lawson. Youngster Niall Chester joined the " I've been run out by Andy Torr " club when he was run out for five then Torr was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Russell Fletcher for 21 and it was left to Graeme Fletcher ( nine not out ) and Dad Ian ( one not out ) to take the final total to 177 for 7 from their allotted 20 overs.
Russell's team opened with Darren Clark and Jamie Arrowsmith and they put on an opening stand of 23 before Clark was deceived by the wiley bowling of Ian Fletcher and was bowled for 18 and the " old man " repeated the feat when bowling Arrowsmith for 14 when the total had reached 40. Russell Fletcher was joined at the crease by Andy Lawson who would need to make a big contribution if his side were going to chase down such a large target and his dismissal proved to be a controversial one in a game that suddenly started to take on a competative edge ! He struck an Ian Fletcher delivery to deep mid on where Charlie Mason took a well judged catch only for the crowd infront of the pavilion to rise as one to claim he had stepped on the rope. Umpire Rick Green stood firm however and deemed the catch to be valid , much to the delight of Ian and his fielding side. To compound matters further Russell Fletcher was then run out by a piece of outstanding fielding from Anthony Fitzgerald who swooped in to throw down the stumps  leaving Russell short of his ground and his team on 56 for 4. Mark Fletcher and Matt Wilkinson then added thirty before yet another controversial incident involving Charlie Mason occured when Mark was adjudged to be run out when it appeared young Charles might have dislodged a bail before having the ball in his hand ! 86 for 5 then became 86 for 6 when Liam McAnaney was trapped LBW by Graeme Fletcher when facing his very first delivery , poor old Macca being crestfallen to get out to Graeme in such a fashion but that brought Graeme's works boss Jonathan Wroot to the middle to join Matt Wilkinson who was going quite well. Wroot has his own inimitable style of batting which involves swinging from the hip and virtually every delivery and on this occasion it was proving fruitful as he blasted the ball to all parts. Wilkinson continued to look good at the other end and for a while an unlikely victory seemed to be on the cards until Graeme Fletcher took the most incredible diving catch in the deep to dismiss his boss for 42 off the bowling of Anthony Fitzgerald and put at risk his recently commenced job prospects !! Fitzgerald then bowled Wilkinson for a well constructed 36 which signalled the end of the mch with Ian's team gaining a triumphant victory by 28 runs.
All participents then retired to the bar to discuss the burning issues thrown up during the match but it was all in good humour with Charlie Mason adamant his catch was quite legitimate and one or two of his opponents seeing it differently!
It did'nt take long for their thoughts to turn to other matters as the smell of the BBQ whafted across and all in all a terrific afternoon was had by everyone, although Ian will probably keep reminding son Russell of the eventual outcome when the conversation turns to cricket over the next few weeks!

CHARITY MATCH IN MEMORY OF BRIAN EVANS AT GRIMSBY TOWN

A charity cricket match is to be played at the Augusta Street ground of Grimsby Town CC on Sunday, August 12 (1pm) in aid of the St Andrew's Hospice.
Grimsby Town 1st X1 will be playing The J. Brian Evans Cavaliers.
Admission is free and refreshments will be available on the ground.
For further information, contact Lynne Lemon, community fundraiser for the Hospice, on 01472 350908 or David Evans on 07984098114.
The club is expecting a large crowd to support this special fixture, which is being organised by Harry Warwick.
The postcode for those living outside North East Lincolnshire, who may be unsure of the location of the ground, is DN34 4TX.
Many of us in local cricket enjoyed the company of Brian Evans over many, many years - on and off the field. Latterly, he was a long-serving umpire on the Grimsby and District Panel. He was groundsman at Ross Group and a notable player with the club. Prior to that, of course, he played many years for Glamorgan in his native Wales.

OUTCASTS 2NDS THROUGH TO BOB WELTON CUP FINAL

BY GLEN SANDS
Outcasts 2nds won through to the Bob Welton Cup Final which will be played at Alkborough on Sunday August 12th by beating Nettleham 2nds at Hirst Priory in a match sponsored by Tobi Potato Merchants of Crowle.
Second Division Nettleham batted first on a ground still recovering from the dreadful weather of late and soon found themselves in trouble as Alex Fletcher , one of five from the famous cricketing family , picked up three early wickets. Alex Willerton was first to go , bowled by the youngest of the clan and he repeated the dose when bowling Steve Peace for two and followed that by having Nettleham wicket keeper Dan McCardell caught by Josh Bramhill without troubling the scorers. The Lincoln side needed to batten down the hatches if they were to set a decent total and that they did as opener Ben Pearce and Marc Thornton dug in to fend off the Outcasts onslaught. They had takn thescore to 43 when Thornton was caught by Jonathan Bramhill off son Josh for 16 then Pearce was caught by Mark Fletcher to earn Josh his second wicket having made a vital 31 runswith the overall total standing at 60. Bramhill senior held another catch to send Chris Smith back to the pavilion for nine off the bowling of Ian Fletcher , the head of the family , in his first over and incredibly he picked up a second victim just two deliveries later when Rick Newell was caught by Graeme Fletcher for nought. To their credit Nettleham then fought back strongly with an unbeaten partnership of 70 between David Lea and Martin Strawson , Lea making 36 and Strawson 32 to leave their final score on 136 for 7 , a tally they appeared unlikely to reach after 35 overs. Alex Fletcher was the pick of the Outcasts bowlers with figures of 3 for 19 although Josh Bramhill took 2 for 30 and Ian Fletcher 2 for 21 to back him up whilst Graeme Fletcher and Mark Coulman kept things good and tight in their nine oves despite not picking up any wickets.
The Outcasts reply got off to a poor start when Oliver Coulman was bowled by Martin Strawson having failed to get off the mark which saw dad Mark join Anthony Fitzgerald at the crease and they took the score to 24 before Coulman senior was second out , caught by Cruickshank off Alex Willerton for 13. Fitzgerald had made 14 when he was third to go , caught by Marc Thornton off Strawson with the total on 33 then Russell Fletcher and Josh Bramhill took the score to 56 before the latter was out for nine , caught by Willerton from the bowling of Ben Pearce. That brought Jonathan Bramhill to the middle and along with Russell they addd 24 runs before Fletcher edged a catch to wicket keeper DEan McCardell off Rick Newell for 19. Nettleham were making a fight of it and really hit back when removing Bramhill senior for 30 , wicket keeper McCardell snapping up a second catch to earn Willerton a second wicket of the innings. Charlie Mason was his third victim , trapped LBW for seven and at 97 for 7 the game appeared to be shifting in Nettleham's favour , particularly when home skipperf Ian Fletcher ws caught behind for just one with his team still requiring 31 to win. However they were held up by a terrific unbeaten partnership between Mark Fletcher and younger brother Graeme who saw the Priorymen home scoring 28 not out and eleven respectively which means Outcasts get to defend the Bob Welton Cup which they won last year against Broughton.
Their opponents this time around will be Scunthorpe Town 2nds who beat Barton Town 2nds in the other Semi Final but for now they can bask in the glory of a fighting display against a tough Nettleham side who made them battle all the way in what was a real topsy turvy affair which was well officiated by Brian Cross and Steve Dixon from the Scunthorpe Umpires Association.

BROUGHTON LOSE TO LUDD IN FINAL EVENING FIXTURE

BY GLEN SANDS

Having secured the Broughton Evening League title, newly crowned champions Broughton took the opportunity to field a team of youth and experience at Luddington and despite the best efforts of a couple of old heads they suffered their first defeat in what was their last game of the season.
Luddignton batted first with Darren Clark and Scott Buttrick putting on an opening stand of 43 before the latter played on to a Robbie Glentworth delivery having scored 18. Russell Fletcher joined home grown Clark and they took the total to 79 when Clark was caught by David Tierney off Oliver Wood for an excellent 39. Broughton gave no lessseven players two overs each and it was Robbie Ward who picked up the third wicket to fall when Fletcher was caught by Shaun Clark for 17 then home skipper Andy Lawson was caught by wicket keeper Sam Benson off Wood again for eight with the overall total on 91. Jamie Arrowsmith then blasted a quickfire 22 not out including two huge sixes to guide Ludd to 115 for 5 from their 14 overs , Shaun Clark picking up the final wicket to fall when bowling Jason Whiteley for just a single , Oliver Wood finishing with 2 for 22 from his brace of overs.
Broughton's response got off to a flier when Robbie Glentworth smashed 13 before he was well caught in the deep by Russell Fletcher off brother Graeme's bowling then Shaun Clark was caught by skipper Lawson to earn Jonathan Wroot a wicket and Broughton were stuttering on 21 for 2. Shaun Clixby was batting well and was joined at the crease by Neil Simpson but the latter was out for four to a sharpwe catch by Jamie Arrowsmith off Jason Whiteley and he quickly made it 36 for 4 when he bowled Lee Stothard for two in the sixth over. Jake Parker and Clixby then took the total to 9 with some good running in the face of some splendid fielding from the Isle side but that man Whiteley then struck in the tenth over when bowling Parker for 14 and it appeared to be down to opener Clixby if Broughton were to maintain their unbeaten tag for the season. He had reached 24 when he was superbly caught by Russell Fletcher , again out on the boudary to earn Whiteley his fourth wicket of the innings and that heralded a collapse that saw Luddington ease to a 44 runs victory. Arron Curry picking up two wickets thanks to an excellent catch from Liam McAnaney and a straight delivery that beat Oliver Wood's defences and it was left to Anthony Fitzgerald who wrapped things up when he bowled Sam Benson with his very first delivery, seeing Luddington to their second evening league win of the season.
So the Broughton Evening League has proven to be a success having returned to the local cricketing calendar with all six teams that competed having enjoyed some excellent matches with some quality participents as well as bringing on their youngsters throughout the ten weeks.
The committee would like to thank Mick Walker and the Scunthorpe umpires that have stood in all the games over the past months and hope that there might be further interest when next season comes around.

Wed  25 July: App-Frod   127 for 8  (Jack Harrison  50 retired), Scunthorpe Town  91 all-out  (Paul Hilton 4 for 10,    Liam Grimes 2 for 23; Dale Coy retired with 50 and Jon Taylor hit 28 for Hibaldstow who set a target of 134 for 3 against Normanby Park who were restricted to 93 for 4 by way of  reply.

JOSH BRAMHILL HITS EXCELLENT HALF-CENTURY FOR OUTCASTS

BY GLEN SANDS

It's going to be a mighty close run affair at the top of the Snaith Evening Cricket League Second Division as to who finishes in the promotion places as no less than three sides could still feature with just one round of games to go.
Airmyn are in pole position following their thrilling win at Drax Village with just three deliveries of the game remaining.
Steve Smith had guided Drax to an impressive 152 for 2 in making 78 not out but the men from the Percy Arms battled hard and broke the winning tape in the final over thankds in no small part to Stevens who made 32 not out.
The other two sides looking to finish n the top two went head to head at Hirst Priory in what was a  very tense affair.
Outcasts scored 102 for 6 with youngster Josh Bramhill making an excellent 50 and for long periods Eggborough appeared likely to overhaul that target as skipper Scott Tyson and Colin Tyson batted well but Scott was eventually out for 39 and Colin stranded on 36 not out as their team fell eight runs short from their allotted overs which means the Isle side now leapfrog them in the table. Goole Firemen are to be congratulated for their participation in their game against Carlton Towers as they only had nine men then lost another to injury once the game got underway!
Carlton took advantage of the inevitable gaps in the field to post a total of 198 for 3 , Mark Spetch hitting 64 not out and Oliver Lister 49 then the  Firemen replied with a valiant 85 , Whaley making 28 not out. Finally Thorne Colliery picked up their third win of the season when beating Howden Town by 46 runs, Marshall hitting 68 and Cockburn 42 for Thorne in their score of 151 for 6 then Howden replied with 105 for 7, Walker hitting 36 and A Marshall 25 for Town.

LINCOLNSHIRE CAVALIERS THROUGH TO GRIMSBY TOWN KNOCKOUT FINAL

Simon Webb receives his Man of the Match Award from Grimsby Town Chairman Ron Borseberry.

PICTURES AND REPORT BY ANN BOULTON
(MANY THANKS YET AGAIN)

Fenner got off to a flying start in the second Grimsby Town Knock Out semi-final before being pegged back by Lincolnshire Cavaliers’ spin bowlers Karanjit Bansal and Matt Rutherford.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Hull side had 53 runs on the board after just four overs.  The only wicket lost was that of Dominic Rhodes who hit 31 off 16 balls before falling lbw to Tom Webb.
Paul Scrowston also hit 31 but the introduction of Bansal to the attack saw the opener caught by Rutherford who then had skipper Sam Fuller caught behind by Steve Crossley.  This still left Fenner on a respectable 76 for three after eight overs but from here the charge stalled.
Bansal went on to take three for 26 off his four eight-ball overs and the Lindum all-rounder was also instrumental in a run out.
At the end of the 12th over, Fenner were 100 for six and despite a determined effort by wicketkeeper Mike Cooke, by the close the score had reached only 122 for nine, Rutherford’s four overs bringing him one wicket for just 19 runs and Tom Webb finishing with two wickets.
Bansal opened with Graeme Bell who was out lbw to Rhodes with only eight on the board.   Taking a lesson from their own innings, Fenner put spinner Mike Arundell on to open at the other end and with the score on 33, Arundell bowled Bansal.  After four overs, Cavaliers were on a par with the Fenner score and Arundell and Ross Davy continued to keep the run rate under control, the spinner finishing with one for 21 off his four overs.
But with Simon Webb at the crease and Crossley replacing Bansal, Cavaliers began to take control and by the time Crossley was caught by Adam Michaels for 31, the total had reached 97 with six overs still to go.
Webb passed his 50 off 46 balls with one six and six fours and with Lindum’s Sri Lankan signing Gahan de Silva (11no) saw his side to a seven wicket victory, finishing unbeaten on 56.
This performance earned Webb the Man of the Match Award and Cavaliers a place in the final against Grimsby Town next Monday.
